I am currently redoing the stringers, mounts, and transom on my 1990 Cobia SS2250. I have decided to complete this project as a learning experience and have spend the last month on forums and TH-cam researching the information. You HANDS DOWN have the best and most informative videos on fiberglass boat repair.
Thank You for explanation of how you do how to use fiber glass I like the fact that you go slow and show how you do it most people go to fast like they think that you know what they are doing lol don’t change what you are doing
Great video, definitely info I didn't know here, Iv done quite a few boat floors, I got sick of glassing and grinding especially so these days I cut the floor out and dig out the rotten stringers over a few days and clean the channels, fit up all the stringers and the new floor pieces then I just epoxy everything in. This way there is no risk of cutting through the hull, I get to keep the original stringer forms walls and I find doing floors this way so much more pleasant than retabbing I don't mind doing floors anymore.
If it works, great. In this boat, the outer stringers weren't even glassed in originally. All I found was remains of rotted wood buried in the soggy foam. The glass around the main stringers was collapsing, so that wasn't of any use either! In this situation, the only thing that was still good was the hull. Have a look at my earlier video of pulling the boat apart, you will see what I mean.
Great vid! I'm a newbie to fiberglass and going to dive right in and restore a 1975 Glastron v178 Starflite. You covered all the basics I needed to know to order materials, tools, and safety equipment. I feel confident I'm ready to get to work. Thanks!
I watched this video sometime erlier but now a few monds later with another boat witch is completely misdone bij the previous owner i watched it again with more interest. And i listened better too this time. For a dutchie not always easy haha. But this is how i am going to di the stringers on my Phantom 21. Thank you for this explanation about the different kinds of resin. I did a small boat already completely inside and outside with unwaxed epoxy (now i know). With this boat i have to do now i used a lot of west system witch is very expensive compared to the normal expoxy. I wil use this for the stringers and waterproofing the wood. Thank you!
ive never seen somebody tab in the bottom side and leave a gap, interested to see a failure analysis of one that has been gapped and then impregnated from underneath and then capped....or put the mixture into your troff youre going to lay your stringer and squish your stringer into the go and then tab the outsides once its pushed into the place to ensure no voids, the way youre doing it looks like room for voids and errors if youre not careful
What wood do you use for your stringers. Could I use laminated marine ply that has a laminated side on both and just grind the laminate down so the poly resin will stick??
Sorry about the late reply... I put two or three layers of 18 oz biax with a mat on the sides (depending on the stringer), a few layers of a lighter weave over the top. The 18 oz is hard to get to bend over the top of a stringer properly.
One drawback to epoxy is that it is not U/V resistant. Used without a top coat to protect it it will start to break down in a year or two. So it is not a good coating for wood that is out of doors unless it is coated with a U/V resistant varnish or such for a clear finish. Like any clear finish it will require a lot of maintenance.

Awesome safety boots lol
Didn't want to get resin on my good shoes or boots...
@@zero_to_floating8338 LOL, good choice.
How many layers of glass do you put on the sides of the stringers? Do you glass over the top?

hi mate great videos can you tell me did you use external grade ply for the stringers and transom in your rebuilds in stead of marine ply.

Where do you by your flibglass mat/weave
I'm in Canada, so I get it from Noah's in Toronto.
Are crocs the shoe of choice for boat work? 🤭😂
They are when I don't want to get polyester resin on my other shoes...
Great video with very detailed explanation. I guess you are in Canada. Were you buying Polyester resin and fiberglas?
Thanks! Bought my fibreglass supplies at Noah's in Toronto.
Fiber btw
Fiber in the U.S. Fibre anyplace else in the world.
