  • In today's video we try and recreate a recipe from Sherri's childhood, the famous Sugar Cream Pie from Indiana! We found a recipe, gathered the ingredients, and then... failed miserably. Ha!
The nice thing about baking fails is that they are still pretty delicious!
Here is the Sugar Cream Pie recipe we used: bakedinaz.com/sugar-cream-pie/

Oh the pressures of Vlogmas! Lol! Your pie sounds similar to buttermilk pie. I make buttermilk pie every Thanksgiving and Christmas. It has buttermilk, sugar, eggs, vanilla, and nutmeg. I use a store bought crust, too. I never heard of buttermilk pie till I met my husbands grandmother. She was born and raised in Mississippi. Since I hate straight buttermilk, I had to be talked into trying it. But it was delicious! After that I was hooked! My husband has always been a big sweet potato pie guy. His grandma made buttermilk pie every year, along with sweet potato, pecan, chocolate, pumpkin, her famous fried apple pies, and several other desserts. He never even tried the buttermilk pie all those years. But after he tried it, it became his favorite! Now its a holiday staple in our house.

I live in Ohio and we always have sugar cream pie at every holiday. Our family recipe is instead of cooking the egg and milk mixture on the burner we pour it in the pie shell and bake it. I also use heavy whipping cream instead of half and half. I hate custard pie but a sugar cream pie is not so eggy and sweet. My favorite pie is apricot pie. The pie you made looked delish. I didn’t know sugar cream pie was an Indiana thing. Merry Christmas! 🎄

Sugar cream pie is the official pie of Indiana. The pie company is called Wick's. Fyi I use heavy whipping cream. Also I don't prebake my crust. I bake it all at once. Next time you might want to put it on a cookie sheet so you can handle it better.

The pie crust that failed, is just what I make with leftover pie dough. I take the leftover pie crust and cut with cookie cutters. Add cinnamon and sugar to the butter and put it over the entire crust and bake. My mom always called this poor man pie. Merry Christmas you guys🎄🦋💜

I have never heard of sugar cream pie. That looked more like a custard pie. I love custard pies but we sprinkle nutmeg on top not cinnamon. It sounds very tasty. At least it was still a good pie for eating. You invented a new pie, call it a Sherry cream pie.

I am sorry that you struggled so much but it was entertaining ! When I need melted butter and I am pre-heating the oven at the same time I will put the butter in my glass measuring cup and just put it in the oven. Since it has a handle it's easy to remove from the oven. Usually most recipes call for the butter to warm up naturally on the counter but I don't have time for that.
A great way to clean your microwave is to put White Vinegar in a small microwave safe bowl and add an equal amount of water. Put the bowl of the vinegar/water mixture in the microwave and "cook" on high for 2 minutes. Carefully remove the bowl and then just wipe clean the microwave.

    • @LeggLife
      @LeggLife  4 ปีที่แล้ว

We almost just melted the butter in a small pan on the stovetop, but we decided to save time by using the microwave. Oops! That was a mistake. Ha!

I was introduced to Sugar cream pie in Ohio. Your recipe seemed similar to the one I use but the technique seemed off from the recipe I use, but that's part of the fun of baking.

I'm a lifetime 58 YEAR OLD Hoosier. I make this pie at Christmas. Only 2 cups of milk..You need a heaping quarter cup of corn starch & must boil one minute. You just added to much milk. Dust with that sugar mixture you put on the other crust. Great first try. GOD'S BLESSINGS

You two are hilarious and I LOVED this video, likely because I have my own Food Blog and do Live Video's that always have the antics of problems. The pie looks great! I'll have to give it a try. You might try a larger sauce pan next time, heat the butter and cream first and then add the sugar with the cornstarch, and cook for longer so that it can thicken up better. Great Video and congrats on doing Vlogmas!

My favorite (very unhealthy) snack is cinnamon sugar pie crust.
Use the pie crust you had for this recipe. Roll it out on a cookie sheet.
Melt some butter and brush it onto the raw dough. Enough to cover, but not run off the edge. Cover butter with cinnamon sugar generously. Use table knife to cut into bite sized pieces. I usually make strips. Then bake as directed on pie crust directions. Your just cooking the dough. Let cool before eating. If you happen to have leftovers, store in ziploc bag.

Use the oven @350-f for 30 minutes, not the broiler for 3.

A little less half & half would've thicken it up a bit and I'm definitely going to start using and combining my own words like Sherri did with vanillay and puddinger. Real Sugar cream pie never has eggs. The issue was they should have let the mixture "bubble"/boil for 60 seconds to fully activate the thickening properties in the cornstarch. I learned the hard way :-)
