They never say it any time in the show, but Mabel is older than Dipper by 5 minutes. So despite what their personalities would maybe suggest, Dipper is the younger twin

As you watch the rest of the show remember that Quentin Trembley wrote the town charter for Gravity Falls, and he's responsible for some of the weird laws that will come into play later. Seeing him in this episode explains some of the town's wackiness in other episodes.

Man--looking at this introduction, it's so hard to believe Quentin Trembley was the main villain of the series.
A couple of things I need to say about the show:
There ARE actual Owl House references. The two show creators were dating and helped one another with their shows, and therefore managed to get a few bits of each other's work into their shows. Confusion always finds it's way to you lol.
Mabel is meant to be a comedic relief character similar to Soos, so please don't expect too much of her situation with Pacifica outside of a bit of teasing that gets swept under the rug.
There is the the phrase, "How can you tell the difference between a North American and a European? A North American will think 100 years is a long time and a Europen will think 100 kilometers is a long distance." This is close but I am not sure if the 100 km distance was the right metric.
100km is about 62 miles, which is fairly short in terms of territory sizes.
Okay this is legit because to me THAT IS A LONG DISTANCE hahahaha, Scotland is legit 441 km... so YEAH thats a long distance to me hahahaha
@@WeeLassReacts for reference the distance to drive between Los Angeles California and San Diego California is just short of 200km and considered a short drive of 2.5 hours. The USA just has a weird sense of scale due to being built for fast travel across its breadth.
@@infitomes7035 I know the feeling growing in rural Canada. It was a big deal that I had a groends house that was over 100 years old, but have classmates that had to drive 50+ km for school.
Trembly always gave me strong Monty Python vibes. I probably would have voted for him just to watch the chaos.
Fun color blind story
My grandfather was color blind, at an event he and two friends needed to get something that had been left in a car. None of them could agree which car in the lot was the right one, as it turned out the other two men were also colorblind and never knew it.
They had to get a fourth person out there to find the right one.
We had an issue with the footage for this episode, the episode didn't fully record, but thankfully I record a backup, but the format is funky so the amazing Anex worked all her magic on this one. So if you see a strange square block in the upper right, thats why!
I'll be honest, the criative editing to cover the strange square and yet show Mosco's hand behind it worthed any "problem" it could had taken from not having technical issues at all. Also, this last one is for Anex: thank you so much for join the chorus of people saying Mosco's not an idiot. She need to hear it more often.

If you want to read the book itself, journal three was released (and the only journal), they sell some on Ebay, and TH-cam has some videos showcasing the whole journal, but it does contain spoilers for the show as Dipper wrote down all his experiences as shown back in episode 1.

Ok, now that I finished it, let's try a more complete commentary.
I LOVE every little animation detail in this show! From those frames where you have to pause to read the tiny text the writers put in (and back in 2012 GF was airing on TV. Boy, I felt old) to the symbolism ones such as how Mabel's earings are upside pyramids and Pacifica's are downside, reflecting their opposite personalities as criative and grounded respectivetly. Also every moment the country cops appear
9:04 Grunkle Stan would be so proud if he heard Dipper say those words in front of him
I'm excited to see if your attitude to a certain character in Gravity Falls changes over time, in the same way your attitude to a certain character in The Owl House has changed / will change. Hope that's sufficiently cryptic, but folks who have seen both shows might know what I'm getting at (If you do - well done! but don't give it away).

Hmmmm..... yeah okay lets face it, I totally warmed up to Amity, I didn't expect to fall so hard for her but it's happening LOL so if I do the same for a character in GF then I will be happy!
Dana Terrace (author of The Owl House) worked on the Gravity Falls project as a storyboard revisionist. Most likely, Alex Hirsch (author of Gravity Falls) heard about Dana Terrace's early ideas for "The Owl House" and decided to add some secret in one of Gravity Falls episodes. So, in one of the episodes of Gravity Falls, in the version with the developers' comments, Gruncle Stan's comments were superimposed onto of the episode. In these comments, he compared the monster they encountered in the episode to his ex-wife named MARILYN. In the description, Uncle Stan cited the features of MARILYN that fully describe the appearance of Edalyn Clawthorne (aerodrome-colored hair, neon pink jacket, looks over 30 years old, white skin, a strange sharp tooth). So it can be assumed that Gravity Falls and the Owl House are in the same universe.

Another sharp observation, Durlands colorblindness will be essential for the mid season finale of season 2. As it allows him to solve a diffiult puzzle easier than those around him.

They're twins, remember? So, even if Dipper is the older (I don't believe we ever find out), it would only be by a matter of minutes.
The fact that Dipper is always trying to be more mature than his age and Mabel always acts like a much younger kid is actually plot-relevant and will come into play much later in the series.

Good choice. That usually works much better than watching with any other part of the body.

Don't worry. As this episode shows, it's not always _Dipper's_ type of intelligence that gets results - sometimes Mabel's kind works better.

It should be noted at this point that the historic "Liberty Bell" (that hung in Philadelphia's state house and called the citizens to the first public reading of the Declaration of Independence) is famously cracked just like that. To an American audience, having a cracked bell in the background like this would subconsciously evoke the feeling of "Important historic stuff here".
11:26 - *_“Ben Franklin secretly_** was **_a woman!”_*
This refers back to episode 2, when Grunkle Stan critiqued Dipper's forging skill, saying "You call that Ben Franklin? He looks like a woman!"

Not sure how far ahead you are in the season, but this becomes relevant quite soon…

Well, until somebody smart comes along, I'll fill in for now: It decodes to "E Pluribus Trembley", a play on the phrase "E Pluribus Unum" (="From the many, one"), which is often treated as a sort of state motto for America and can be found on their currency.

I believe journal 3 says that dipper is the younger of the two. Or maybe it was one of the games. Either way, 99% certain Dipper younger by a few minutes.
Nowadays maturity does not indicate age with so many people acting like a spoiled 5 year old.
Also, I wouldn't say that Pacifica is going to go the same way as Amity in TOH (cos that'd be lying) but she _does_ get her own character development later on 🙃
Pacifica is almost like a prototype for Amity. She walked so that our cotton candy haired goddess could run.
It doesn't matter too much for understanding the series, but Gravity Falls is set in the Pacific Northwest (in the state of Oregon... as in, the Oregon Trail, which you may have heard of. Settler towns only started popping up that far west in the 1800s, which is young! I live in a town that's pretty similar actually). Whereas The Owl House, or at least where Luz lived before the story got started, is in New England, and that may or may not be important to know eventually.
The creator of Gravity Falls is the voice of King on The Owl House.

In regard to your colorblind thing, people with X X chromosomes are also more likely to have more than the average number of cones in their eyes, meaning they have better color vision!

I didnt even notice the Liberty Bell in that room till you said something (bell with a crack is almost certainly the Liberty Bell, that cracked bell is like a crazy mega huge symbol in America)
To be accurate there WOULD be older places but most were burned down or flooded or ethnically cleansed in some other way. Oraibi, a Hopi village within the borders of the US, has been able to remain for over 900 years now for example.

McGucket eating a book is significant because eating so many Gravity Falls books made him that way - he ate books 4-9. The cops shared book #10. Owl House did come first and the demon realm's weirdness is leaking through. Bill.
I waited the entire rest of the series for Dipper to use the president's key and he never did. There's even a part in the series finale where it was the perfect opportunity, but it's never brought up again after this episode. OR IS IT?
I think Mabel is slightly older, but it really doesn't matter since they are actually just modified clones of Stan, same with everyone else, except Soos, hence why everyone's real name is Stan.
Fun fact, Eda and Grunkle Stan were married for 1 day before they both robbed each other

7:06 You can! It's actually possible to but Journal 3! It is 100% canon and it contains everything we see in and out of the show. It's also full of new lore and codes. If you are interested though I recommend not buying it until you finish the show becuase MAJOR spoilers, even from "The Last Mablecorn" which i know is the latest reaction.

Heh. There's a saying that in the U.S., they think a hundred years is a long time, and in Europe they think a hundred miles is a long way.
Yeah, this episode's a bit heavy-handed on the plot, what with the Quentin Trembley and "joke" documents basically straight up telling you how President Trembley will have to come back and bring in the military to do battle against Gideon's mind-controlled army. Still, the execution of the battle and all the heartfelt moments totally make the excessive foreshadowing worth it!

You reminded me of a ghost hunting show talking about what Americans consider old vs what Europeans consider old. Mainly as America as it is now is not that old and the further west you go the younger the settler towns will be. Even if one is listed as an old abandoned ghost town with a history you will find plenty of places on the East coast still lived in that are older and older still in Europe...and this is why for every one ghost in the states Europe has six ghosts, seven haunted dolls, a family of little people, and a wight playing chess with a nature maiden in tbe garden.
What's the difference between a Brit and an American?

Im from montana, and during the summer season, we have a small ghost town called bannack, and every 3rd weekend in july they hold a celebration like gravity fall's pioneer days, exept we call it bannack days here, its loads of fun, full of shootouts, gold paning old time saloon music, muzzle loading shooting range and very good food i highly recomend it, if you ever get to Montana and experience this you will not regret it, there are tons of ghost towns here, another is Virginia City and Nevada City, its loads of history, live theater entertainment, bars, good food, and ghosts, i sound like a tourism guide but seriously summer here is where its at.
I'm pretty sure the credit scene with the babies is before he encased himself. and for the random may or may not be true comment. Deputy Durland's also a descendent of Nathaniel Northwest on his grandmother's side of the family, in fact he's the true heir to the Northwest family fortune due to Trembley's "Dibs policy" one of the many strange laws he passed.
