MY MAN! I have been watching HOURS of youtube videos in search of something like this. Your series on this project is extremely well done. You are VERY informative and you don't skip over any small details nor do you overexplain very simple concepts. I was on the fence about hiring a contractor but after watching your videos I now have the confidence to do this myself. You are doing God's work. haha. Thank you so much!
Very cool i need to build one for my parents. When they were told to evacuate there was no place to go.She drove to a metal building car wash and parked in there . Never again .I learning how to build and thats the first thing I will.build. I think your way is better.Im looking into the earthbag however bricks are ready made so that will.be the way on the storm shelter. A big hug to you and yor hard working wife for showing me something today that makes better sense. Im 60 and know this could be done even at my age.
Nicely done! I have been frustrated trying to get construction contractors to come and build my foundation, with most being backlogged by 6-8 mos and quoting me 2X-3X the average price! You have me convinced I can do this myself using your tutorial. Thanks!
Sir, you are an amazing craftsman, but you would be also an excellent professional instructor! It is so rare to see real tutorial video these days (and I spend a lot of time on TH-cam).
Man, I'm glad I found these videos. My wife and I will start building our house within the next year. We're building in the side of a steep hill and decided to do a basement instead of trying to build up the hill to do a slab foundation. Tons of info in your videos and very well explained...
Man how I wish you had post frame construction videos. I watch tons of those because I plan on building one myself and YOUR attention to detail in explanation would mean a World to all who are planning the same. The videos I watch, the guys are professional and, I guess, try to explain it, but they completely miss ALL of the small details that are the most important parts to know. Not sure whether or not they do this on purpose. THANK YOU SO MUCH for these series of videos!
This is such an awesome tutorial!!!! The calm cool COMPLETE explanation of what to do, is SO HELPFUL!!! THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR TAKING THE TIME TO MAKE SUCH A WELL DONE DYI VIDEO. BLESSINGS TO YOU!!!!
Wow. Ty. I want to do this. My uncle knows how. Know I can go to him and have basic knowledge of what it is I want to accomplish. thank you. I appreciate you
4:40 that slide is the most genius idea I've ever seen on a jobsite! Not sure if it's OSHA approved in my circumstances, but now I really want to know 🤣
Excellent presentation and helpful in many ways. One question, how did you address inclement weather, meaning, rain during the excavation and the building process?
hello. Can you pour the flooring before hand or along with the mat or footing instead of doing it after you put up the blocks. or can you make the footing taller
Questions: 1. On many blocks, you don't put mortar under one short end. Why? 2. Will you insulate the basement? 3. Will this basement's upper floor be flush w the existing home?
This video series is REALLY well done and helpful. Do you have any books you'd recommend on basement, foundation, and general concrete and block building? Would love to know what you use for reference material so I can have that on hand. Thanks much for your incredible work here!!!
The only thing I'd add as a tip would be, dampen the blocks with a sponge or brush before you add the mortar to the block. Reason being, when the block is damp, the moisture pulls in the chemicals that are in the mortar, into the pours of the block, making for a stronger bond between mortar and block. If you just slap wet mortar into a dusty block, it doesn't really bond, and results in premature block shifting while the structure settles, or durri g seismic activity
god tier video. I built my own foundation last year. One thing I noticed was that the wall felt weak until it was filled with concrete. Did you think the same?
I'm looking to have a small cabin built on raw land and a basement is a must, I wish I were a little younger to do this but I'm just researching on block or poured basement. You filled every cell, couldn't you have just done a poured basement or is poured not as strong?. This video was very detailed, thank you for sharing.
Ultimately I chose blocks because I did not have access to the proper concrete forms needed to build 8' walls. Just pouring the walls will be easier if have the forms.
How much would something like that cost I need an 8x8 deck with the stairs coming down opposite of the door I’m just wondering labor cost so I don’t get ripped off. Thank you for your help
Great video. I learned a lot. I will probably be referencing this video when building my Doomsday Bunker. And I will probably make the ceiling concrete.
What kind of blocks are these? Standard weight concrete? Cinder? Basalite? I'm getting quotes on having a block basement built and the builder says he only uses the light weight blocks. I'm not sure of the difference between cinder and basalite blocks but they're both lightweight. Google says cinder blocks are much weaker than concrete blocks and I'm nervous about paying a fortune for a future headache of potentially bowing walls. Would you consider concrete filled cinder blocks strong enough to last? Thanks for any assistance.
Concrete blocks are kind of the standard now, You will want to confirm what the building codes are in your area, for if cinder blocks are even allowed. That being said, after the cinder blocks are filled with concrete they are fairly strong, but if you don't fill all the cells, the structure will not be near as strong as a Concrete block wall.
It’s me again with a question, the yellow string tells you where to set the block so that the wall is plum all the way down, correct? Does it ever go out of plum? Is it necessary to use a four foot level to check to see if it’s plum or does the yellow string keep it all lined up? This is me worrying 😒 If I build a basement do I need drainage tile around the outside or inside of it? I’ll be using a septic tank. Sorry for driving everyone crazy 🤪
Chances are not as long as it would have if there was a structure above his foundation walls. Done a few like this. Mostly crawl spaces turned into either full basement or a much dipper crawl space then was there. Not fun. Bunch of banging head off everything tht is hard above u. And bent over all day. The Midwest is full of these crawl spaces people want dig out and foundation installed.
@@goldenlions203 well one tht is 24 ft w x 36 long took from start to finish without being 100% accurate, I’m thinking it was right around 3 weeks to a month. It all depends as you probably already know. Depending on how big and how many courses u plan on laying. The whole laying block foundation under structure takes a lot longer. Much more work goes into supporting the structure above. Depending on the weight of the structure to. Good idea is to pay a structural engineer to before starting and get a game plan. Tht is if doing a rebuild.
How long did it take to lay the first row? Looks like first blocks were upside down as well. Im in the same boat. Watch vids, learn by doing. Cant afford to pay someone other than myself.
You sir have figured out the hardest part of instructional videos - pairing video with clear commentary in a concise yet complete manner.

Man I wish I learned this way rather than my dad screaming and throwing things at me 🤣
Did he throw the cinder blocks at you?

The biggest weakness is the ceiling. The tornado takes it away and sucks everything under it. The ceiling of the cellar was to be a concrete monolith.
god tier video. I built my own foundation last year. One thing I noticed was that the wall felt weak until it was filled with concrete. Did you think the same?
Yes. Until filling the cells the wall doesn't have much structure.
