"POWER BLAST!!!" I mean he's got plenty to work with, martial arts, pet rat, dynamite, cherry bomb, throwing knife, and of course, the deadliest weapon, THE PAPER AIRPLANE.
This soundtrack is a masterpiece. I just listened to the album that inspired it which had a full band. The reason the comix zone is so brilliant is because he’s trying to recreate guitar sounds with synths and it doesn’t exactly sounds like guitar it sounds like some kind of crazy grunge synth piano. And the breaks and bass hits and dynamics are so good. Amazing composition
It's a lot like the Mother record; they composed "real" songs with lyrics and instruments first and then used that as a base for the game's soundtrack. Really cool stuff.
yeah its a very cool soundtrack! it has really grown on me over time. kinda a shame though that both the modern and the original pc versions soundtracks kinda suck. the newer one is just a bad emulation of the original and for the old one - they forgot the guitars 70% of the time and when they appear they are just the strange sounding e guitars mostly known from doom and duke 3D.
cymbals are always cool on 16 bit soundtracks! but the music barely has any punchy drums to begin with so i think that should have been improved first. thats actually one thing the pc midis do better - but overall they are very incomplete.
What I love about it is that some of the synth melodies sound like they came straight from a Cars album, and if you listen to some interviews Kurt Cobain did he said Nirvana was basically a punk band trying to play new wave without a synth. That shows me that Howard Drossin really understood the connection between grunge and new wave, and since the Genesis soundchip is an FM synth he could lean into those new wave influences and it still came out grungey.

Another Sega Genesis / Mega Drive hit that easily gets in top 5. As a matter of fact I would have given it the first or the second place of best Sega Genesis / Mega Drive games of all time.
It's a tough battle between Comix Zone and Streets of Rage 2. For the recognition, impact, popularity, and gameplay I think SoR2 has the lead, but Comix Zone pushed the genesis hardware much more, it's tremendous well made and polished in every technical aspect. You can easily see they put a lot of labor and love in the making of this game.
Sheila olfieWay Not a problem at all. Sonic series is very controversial. Some people like them, some don’t. I personally don’t. I wouldn’t even put the Sonic series in Top 10 list. I think this series was only popular among young kids at the time.
Neutral End No, actually is a tough choice between Comix Zone and Dune: The Battle for Arrakis. The Streets of Rage series is great, but Comix Zone has a slight edge due to being so unique. This comes from a person who probably spent hundreds of hours playing SoR games. But then again due to popularity most people will agree that Mortal Kombat was the #1 choice, so actually this game takes the 1st place. It is said that a movie based on this game is in the making, but the date of it's release is still to be announced.

It was a model 1, if I remember correctly, but I have no idea the revision, nor what console he would have been using at the time he composed for this game, if there was ever a reason to switch consoles. That being said, the way GEMS used instruments and how Drossin used GEMS here, with clearly defined, midi-like instruments and no weird tricks that took advantage of some of the wonderful oddities of the default sound chips, like some of the other best soundtracks on the genesis were doing, just allows the YM3438 to play them clearer, as it was designed to do: just be a better sounding chip.
