It's not just great because of nostalgia, the music on this is amazing, listen to level 1 with real speakers on volume Some of the music on this is masterful, the drums are so fast paced, the bass beats are crazy. It all sounds good if your speakers are, some levels not so much but some sounds can't be made better. It's like hearing a harp or something, just a different instrument all together on 8-bit sound.

People are sleeping on Dark Guld's theme (26:27). It's a little surreal, which kind of fits the bossfight. You just went to his throneroom, which has someone who isn't Dark Guld in it. And then you're in a shiny room with mirrory tiles, his axe flies in out of nowhere, and he suddenly appears. Even his skeletons are the shiniest and whitest in the entire game. I think that battle takes place kind of outside reality.
When I next feel the need to run into battle, wielding a sword, and wearing only my pants, I'll be doing it with the Castle Gate theme playing in my head.
The Golden Axe games have the best Soundtrack for any game that I have ever played. Yes better than Mega Man 2 and even Streets of Rage. My favorite Arcade games ever. Perfect music to suit the theme of the games.
Song playing in 14-15 minute mark has definite Shining Force influence, not only with the military drum beat but especially with the higher pitched flute like instrumentation.
