    Yuzo Koshiro is a great musician. This game's OST is from 1994, and of course the quality sounds as such from a game in 1994. For this OST, he tapped into some early hardcore, jumpstyle, jungle, industrial techno, electronic, etc , even a little jazz; and if you are not into those genres of music then you definitely won't appreciate this the same (besides as game play BGM). He played some of these tunes in clubs a few years back and it sounded great. My fave tracks from this OST are Spinning Machine, Dub Slash, Random Cross, Happy Paradise, and The Poets I.
    I have been playing these beat em up games since 1997, no kidding 😅The music was surely a big influence on keeping my interest.

      Couldn't have worded it better than U did. Great 1994 game soundtrack indeed: both Yuzo Koshiro & Motohiro Kawashima(as well as all others involved of course) deserve much respect & praise for such a way-before-its-time beat em up ost masterpiece (yeah, bring on the pitchforks & torches ;))!! Lol

    Hearing this in the 90's coming from the Mega Drive was pretty amazing. There was nothing like it at the time. Coming from the smooth beats of SOR2 i can see why people wouldn't immediately take to it. It's not a crowd pleaser. I loved it the instant i heard it. It feels so grim and gritty and it fits SOR3's gritty atmosphere.

    • @danmakuman
      @danmakuman 6 ปีที่แล้ว +49

      SOR2 is more melodic and easy to listen and is fantastic, I'll love it 'till I die XD, but SOR 3 is much more experimental, more raw, is all about to surprise the listener with every song and note. Doesn't want you to follow a melody but instead a secuence, an evolution of each song. every damn note counts. The best example is Inga Rasen, they really wanted you to listen the whole thing to get the feeling both composers tried to accomplish. Still, is always a matter of tastes

    Motohiro Kawashima on this soundtrack (from the Red Bull Music Academy interview, worth reading):
    " Koshiro-san found that working with me was okay while doing Bare Knuckle II, so he decided to have us each take on half of the next game.
    A bit of the ways into Bare Knuckle III he came to me one day really excited about some bit of programming. It was an automatic composition apparatus that could take the numbers you programmed in and convert them, that he had made with one of the languages they were using at the time. He wanted me to use it, too. I used it for “Fuze” on the Bare Knuckle III soundtrack, but I didn’t use the automatic composition apparatus for all of my tracks. For example, “Poet,” I programmed that one the normal way. I think I used the automatic composition apparatus less than him. You can tell it when you hear it. It’s got this random effect sound to it. With Bare Knuckle III we got rid of even more of the human element (in the music). We were really trying to crank up the meter with what we were making for that game. I think that’s what Koshiro-san had in mind when he came up with (the automatic composition apparatus). He wanted us to give III a more decadent feel, I think."

Some people like didgeridoos and tam-tams. Some people like 100%bitrate aggro electro. Some people like ear grinding trash death metal.
      What you say is like "McD's is best burger" no you prefer it, fine. So clearly this OST was about making some engaging electro music to reflect the gameplay and it's quite perfect. People not knowing math and not understanding what automation is all about smh. Don't start DJing please! xD

    This is one of the only game soundtracks that I can think of that's far enough ahead of its time, and focused enough on its own musical integrity to the exclusion of all else that it just works as a discrete album in its own right, never mind the game. Silent Hill is another. Can't think of too many in this line.

      ***** Kinda like Atari Teenage Riot, right? Reminds me of that + later 90s/early 2000s Autechre, stuff that can't be quite categorized as noise or glitch as it is still too "musical" but is filtered through those ideas. SOR 1 and 2 sound like the FM is being made to simulate analog stuff, particularly the almost 808 machine sounds of the drums and the analog-ish "pads" in SOR 1. SOR 3 sounds like the music was made "for" the MD as an instrument unto itself. A lot like Skeleton Krew (which I also have uploaded). I can't confirm that is what they were thinking of course, but it feels like the SOR3 style removes the "artificial limitations" Koshiro & co imposed on themselves, taking the MD sound on its own terms.

    • @RickyCespedes

      its basically the totality of what EDM is today. also look for the game play of The adventures of batman and robin for sega. its a 90s game with alot of the same music influence in it. both games where ahead of there time.

    • @Wavejumper
      @Wavejumper 8 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      It has nothing to do with EDM/Dubstep. Yuzo Koshiro's work on the Street of Rage series is inspired by the House & Techno movement born in Chicago & Detroit in the mid 80's, who will become popular in europe fall 80's early 90's. Yuzo said in a interview that he often go to clubs in Japan at that time, and he was obviously influenced by this genre of music.

Apparently, he created a musical device which generated random notes and sounds. I'm wondering if the music for the "Bad Ending" is 12-Tone Serialism, like Arnold Schoenberg or Anton Webern. It sure sounds like it to me.

Compare this soundtrack to SOR1 and you can hear how far he had come in less than 2 years from the simplistic club beats and melodies of the first game to the maze-like rhythms and abrasive effects that would have a huge influence far beyond the video game music realm.

    The Good Ending theme starts off with the first part of the SoR1 and 2 opening theme, which was ripped from Enigma's Sadeness.
    The bridge that was added to this version at the end is strangely reminiscent of their other famous song, Return to Innocence. I almost want to play indigenous chanting over it.

    I have no idea why people hated this soundtrack, granted I understand it is a completely style from the first two games but maybe that's why I like it. It's random, the bass is pretty sick and is pretty unique. My favorite tracks have to be Random Cross, Moon and The Poets II. Try listening to that with a sub woofer turned all the way up. Only track that I think sounds like ass is Bulldozer.

    • @angelboyxx

      i think it gets so much hate because it was very different from what was going on at the time. Also consider that generally people like streets if rage 2 soundtrack better. I'll admit that one was better overall but i still prefer SoR3 over it. So the Sor3 soundtrack had a tough act to follow. I agree with what you said about the bass line I love it! My favorite tracks are Happy paradise,fuze,cycle 1,boss,random cross, and ingra rasen.

      I think people judge this soundtrack more harshly because SoR3 wasn't nearly as popular of a game as the first two. Therefore the soundtracks from SoR and SoR2 get way more nostalgia points because fewer people bought/played SoR3 while the first two are burned into their childhood memories.

      I didn't play SoR3 until recently so when i first heard the OST i thought it was so odd...but it quickly grew on me and now i love it. So i do agree with you. Also as most people know in the American version the gameplay is edited pretty bad. I'm sure that had something to do with the game not being as popular once people found out about that later on.

      sor4's soundtrack is definitely tame.. I can only think of 2 good tracks, stage 1 which is just a remix of sor2's stage 1, and art gallery..
      what's crazy is they didn't even use any sor3 tracks in their retro soundtrack but picked terrible tracks from sor's sega game gear version.

    • @Sextus70
      @Sextus70 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@BennyHarassi Yeah, it is not bad and a few themes like those you mention are pretty nice (personally, I think the final stage theme is quite dope too), but most of the OST is pretty generic IMO. My biggest disappointment with the game are the final bosses: they are as bland as their themes (like seriously, couldn't they come up with a better main antagonist than those two brats?).
      Actually, I thought a walkthrough with the retro soundtrack was going to be a better experience, but it turned out to be an even further letdown. I also found most of the selected tracks so terrible and unfitting for the stages that they made me miss the new OST.
