hmm i might have understood it wrong, but from my research they sometimes call it that, even in the video at 0:17 you can hear him say it. but im not really involved in the sport that much so youre probably right! sorry bout that
The talk of going to 1000' started long before Scott's death. Shit, everyone was talking about it in the late 90's. No one could keep an engine alive out the back. The goal was to keep the engine rotating for the last 320 feet and hope nothing flew out. NHRA knew that the fans would not respond well to shortening the surface for the fuel cars and Scott's death gave them the excuse. It sounds cruel but it is a truth the HRA does not want you to hear.
As European, I am not really into drag racing. To me it seems like they just slightly changed what the cars have to be opotimised for. Why would someone get so emotional about an acceleration race being 305 meters instead of 402? But I guess to those hardcore fans of the sport, it hits like how the Hockenheimring was changed, or WRX Rallycross going electric. But regardless of the race distance, those machines you race there are really impressive on paper. I hope that one day I can see one in the wild and not just through a small computer screen.
Yeah im from sweden, i know we have a dragstrip not that many hours from my house, never been though. but seems like great fun being able to feel the sound when they pull away. Got a bit more interested in the sport while researching this video
I can tell you both, as a man who grew up with a dad who tuned alcohol drag bike engines in the 90’s and has taken me to countless NHRA Top Fuel dragster events, the sound is bone rattling. It makes your eyeballs shake!! If you’re not paying attention, you absolutely will jump! Also, since the 90’s, we’ve watch formula one together. I became a mechanical engineer because of my love for engines and I still watch every race with my dad while it’s live! I’ve even been to a race at COTA. Circuit or drag, the power is amazing. But top fuel is a whole different level. Come check it out, come have your teeth rattled out of your head!😂
@@TGears314Could not agree more! Caught the NHRA Summer Nationals a couple years back with my Pop. We were at the fence about 40 ft behind the tree. They’d light the tires up just to the right of us and launch just to the left. When you are that close to that kinda horsepower you feel the concussive force !!
The NHRA does call it 1000 ft. The cars that run 8th mile are like pro mods and mini-mods or full tube chassis cars. Generally, they are privateers with sponored. Not cars like the Lucas Oil pro stock dragster. For the most part, they are still a "car" its not a rail, like a top fuel dragster or funny car. Which is a rail with a body, basically.. Grudge racers, no prep, "street style" track racing, whatever you want to call it, 1/8th mile usually. The big tire cars in the top tiers would be doing well over 220 mph in the 1/4 so they just run 1/8th and even then, they still run 3.60's or 3.50's with traps of over 200 in the 1/8th. There are ALWAYS exceptions and im sure i cant remember every class of racecar in the top tiers. A lot of the drivers and owners are also not spring chickens. They are not looking for risk is all going 240+ mph for a trophy and 10 grand. They spent that getting to the track.
😂😂😂 nice effort, not entirely correct. 1/8 mile races are easier on parts, more fan friendly ( you can see the entire track from the stands), supposedly safer and cheaper to maintain for the track owners. NHRA ( in all their wisdom 🙄) reduced the length to 1,000 feet in a knee jerk reaction for safety, when Scott Kalitta died in a funny car crash. In their wisdom the last few hundred feet is when the carnage takes place in fuel cars(?). The other classes all still run the standard quarter mile.
When I used to attend NHRA events in the late 1970s, it was still a 1/4 mile. The nitromethane cars ran in the low six second, high five second elapsed times. Now that they only go 1,000 feet and are so much faster, the race takes half the time. It feels as though the race is over as soon as it starts! There are many other differences, but this is the most pronounced.
Fuel cars run 1000 feet, and it is called one thousand feet. These runs include the 1/8th mile or 660’ ET and speed as an incremental. So you may hear that a driver ran 4.99 to the 1000’ feet and hit 289 mph at the 1/8. The finish line ET and MPh are at 1000’. 1/8 mile racing is a different style of racing and is only 660’- NOT the same as 1000’ racing. ONLY Top Fuel Dragsters and Top Fuel Funny Cars run 1000’. At a National event, nobody uses 1/8th mile as the finish line, but EVERYONE uses it as an incremental.
Best explanation yet. Thanks for that. However, we still need the sanctioning bodies/groups to establish, share and promote a clear standard for drag racers and spectators 'cos the current system(s) are as confusing AF. For proof of the confusion look at all the answers/opinions offered by all and sundry.
I’ve only heard 1/4 mile, 1/8 mile, & 1000 ft. I’ve never heard them call a 1000 ft race an 1/8 race. Honestly, the term 1/8 leaves and bitter taste in my mouth and I think others as well.
With the technology of today. They're going faster now at 1000" then they were years ago at 1320." I see changes coming. Shorter track, no. There are other ways to limit hp and speed.
I stopped buying tickets to Pomona when they started shorting fans by 320 feet per race. I stopped watching all racing when the Wokies took over the broadcasts. It's all crap now.
I've never heard anyone call 1000' an eighth mile. There is 1/8 mile racing but they truely only go 1/8 mile, not 1000'

@@AndreasPetersen1they definitely run 1/8 at 1000ft
@@amberminor4838They run it at 660 ft. That’s what 1/8 mile is.
@@amberminor4838an eighth of a mile is only 660 feet😳
That vcr joke was underrated
True!! Every video essay have a VHS to play smart
What do you mean
This is content i would expect from a channel with a ton more subs ngl
that means alot!! thank you!
isn't 1/8 mile 660ftor 201ish meters ?

Great explanation , you deserve more subs dude
Shorter track just means you gotta have it together right from the go !
You forgot to mention ( parts savings ) That is HUGE for the teams !

I guess shrinkflation hit the drag racing as well.
I am proud to say that I am one of the top 0.1%
i am proud that you watched far enough to see that, thanks for the support man!
They wanted an extra 320 feet to slow down.
I really miss the 1420
The wheelie was cold ash 4:01
too god damn fast.. its true. They were gonna start hitting 340-350 mph before too long. Its just too fast.
Good job on this 👍🏼

It's not even fun to watch when the cars are so far removed from what we drive every day.
Fun for me.

1/8 mile is half track. Any 1/4 mile strip can handle 1/8th mile racing.

Math is hard
it definitely can be bud, what part do you want me to explain?
