I have Canon Powershot S95, bought it in 2012, and still use it like a pro, shoot in raw, lowlight 😁. It was high end compact camera at the time. The image quality is so good for a small camera, and it's very pocketable. I have other compact cameras - Canon G1X & Ricoh GR3 but they're too big to put in the pocket(due to APSC sensor size). For me, the purpose of compact camera is must be pocketable. If they're too big to put in the pocket, I'd rather bring my mirrorless camera.
The S95 was considered a legend back then, I almost fot the S95 instead of the G15. But I prefer easier manual controls so I ended up with the G15. Thank you for sharing!
Just bought Canon G15 few weeks ago. Used in great condition, cheap. Very happy with it, Photos quality is good, only those blown higlights...I use it mainly on bike trips, when I need small camera. I also have Sony A5100 and few lenses, but it's too big to be pocketable camera.
@@nexusmediaworld Well, it can produce very nice photos. Especially colors are great. Macro photos, nature are what this camera like. Cons are: tendency to overexpose and blow highlights, not good auto white balance (a lot of photos were to reddish and I must correct it in Lightroom) and lack of details due to small sensor. Is it worth of interst depends how much you will have to pay. it's nice camera to buch chep, but if you can afford to spend some more i would recommend G7X.
How’s the autofocus? Does it struggle? I have an old sony cybershot i’ve been using as pocket cam but the slow autofocus cause me to miss some moments 😑
I just bought a G15 as well, with the idea of taking it out for my MTB trail riding. I’ll see how that goes but I do worry about the lack of weather sealing and shock resistance. That might lead me to save it for other (safer) activities and look into an OM TG-7 (or future TG-8) for bike use.
G15 is awesome in 2022..snappiness is one the advocates for old cams..I love the g15.. actually picked up a powertshot s90 as my EDC my current cam is the canon M50..the g15 to me was best of the both worlds especially for Street photography or candid photos..and don't forget I love to shoot raw...this may be my next to add to my collection..your g15 looks so 🆕 still
Thank you for the comment and sharing your experience with older camera! The S90 as far as I know featured the same sensor as in the G15. Ha! Yes, it is basically very rarely used when I purchased it, because back then I was so busy with "bigger sensor is better" mentality, so I use my Canon DSLR more often. Now I use it a lot more than before for casual photography. Cheers 😁
Great video, Gary! I have a G16 I purchased in 2014, and continue to use even today. My main camera is a Canon 5DMkIV, which is clearly superior to the G16. No matter, the G16 continues to serve me after over 13,000 photos. Best to you!
Good video, thanks for making it. I have one of these inbound at the moment, having the S95 and S120 and quite happy with them. The Powershot G series has been on my radar for a long time, and I came very close to getting the G10 but was derailed by the Pentax K7, so finally getting one, has me somewhat happy. It also enters a small collection of older high-end compacts, which are great fun to horse around with, when I am not carrying a M43. 🙂
Gary, I'm an older guy and me and my wife are close to retirement. I started to get back into my love of gardening and photography.I love how i'm learning so much from young people like you about photography.I'm glad that you are talking about some of these smaller cameras which i find to be quite beautiful in their design alone. These cameras remind me of cameras from a time gone by.I really love those shots of the garden, quite beautiful and inspiring.Thank you.
And about comparing with modern phone, I don't know whether the phone you're using, has raw mode or not. But modern phone is more like using computing/AI photography, while the Canon camera is using traditional lens. I love shooting in raw, because editing process in photography, is like an art to me 😁 same like the art of shooting photos itself.
I traveled around the world with this camera. Everything the high altitude of thorung-lah pass did it in. The camera started eto come apart from some internal swelling and the LCD faded over several weeks until it wasn't usable.
Gary, we have the same outlook as far as camera is concerned. At present I have a Fuji XT4, but I enjoy using my Panasonic GF10 with the 12-32mm kit lens much better. Before the GF10, I used a camera which has similar specs with your Canon G15. The Pentax MX-1. Similar sensor (1/1.7). Similar focal length and aperture. Both have a fixed lens. I enjoyed the MX-1 very much. It so happen that it broke, that's why I bought the GF10. I had a project in Jakarta way back in 2014. My camera then was the Olympus OMD EM5, with the Pana 7-14mm lens. I enjoyed this combination much more than an APS-C setup (it's personal, I'm not trying to bury other systems). Point is, technology is a good thing. Bigger sensor, high dynamic range, better AF, higher frame rates, but if it's too bulky and you can't bring it out, what's the point of having a modern camera?
Just dug my 77D and G15 out of the safe. I was ready to upgrade to start taking pictures again but now I don't think I need to. My S22 Ultra does a pretty darn good job overall on the run. Time will tell.
Thanks for sharing! I have S21FE which takes great picture as well, but the G15 set to shoot RAW produces more "flexible" images. Have fun, happy shooting!
I have the G16 which does have ability to connect to wifi and transfer to my phone. Most everything else seems to be identical. Awesome video appreciate your enthusiasm.
I get that feeling so much. I finally managed to grab my Sony a6600, switched to APS-C and all... but man, the pictures are beautiful, and the video quality is absurd... but I found out that I don't feel half the fun using it as I had using my Canon G7X ii. We spend so much time aiming for the best gear that we forget to have fun.
Thanks Gary, that was a great video. I just bought a nice example of a G15 and received it yesterday. I’m looking forward to carrying that with me as much as possible. I’m predominantly a Fuji X-T1 user, but I also have a Nikon D7000 that I use occasionally (I prefer mirrorless).
Another cool feature of the G15 (that I didn't notice you mention) is it has an input for an intervalometer, which I've found to be a bit rare on point & shoots. One of the reasons I bought it 10 years ago, to do timelapses!
Very entertaining video - as always. My oldest camera is my Canon Powershot G9 I bought in 2007. Bought a "nos" In 2015. I do like them. Otherwise I use mft cameras.
I traveled around the world with this camera. Eventually the high altitude of thorung-lah pass did it in. The camera started eto come apart from some internal swelling and the LCD faded over several weeks until it wasn't usable.
Thank you Joe for the comment! Yes my G85 and GX8 are going to be "old" someday, but they are still great cameras! The G15 really proves that sometimes I don't need the latest camera and be happy with my current cameras 😁
I was just looking at my G15 this morning and thought "I should use this more often". I like that it's small and pocketable, but still has a better lens than my smartphone. It's a good compact alternative to my full-frame DSLRs. The only thing I don't like is how laggy the shutter is. It's fine for anything that doesn't move, but it's virtually useless for kids, dogs, or sports. As for your question about the oldest camera I still use, I've been using my Nikon SP (1957) pretty much exclusively this past week.
I used to have a Cybershot DSC-W5, but it broke. A couple years later I bought a Cybershot DSC-W630, wich I'm currently using and love it a lot. Can't explain, it's just a very fun a practical camera to use. And the image quality is pretty acceptable, considering it's a very portable device.
It sounds like a fun camera! It just proves the point that we don't always need the latest and the greatest, sometimes we can just have a lot of fun with what we already have.
Fun video. I wish I could have kept all my old digi cameras just to play around with them today. Still really enjoy shooting on a Sony RX1. Going strong after 11 years (?)
Micro 4/3 is my daily workhorse, but I recently picked up an old Canon G1X mk1. Man, oh man. This thing is fun and has a beautful output. And I like the Canon colors so much, more so than my Olympus colors. I also really like the optical viewfinder better than the electronic one.....easier on my eyes and more natural. Also, I'm using the digital zoom a lot. It does fine with the larger sensor and gives me a heck of a lot of range.....16x with a single built in lens ain't bad at all.
thank you so much for this video! I refuse to buy a very expensive camera for my social media videos! I do have this camera and so far it took amazing photos! do you think I can take videos and edit them with capcut?
This video is timely, because I have been watching XPro3 reviews, but realized that my forgotten G15 could do a similar process, when shooting RAW and using film emulations in Lightroom. Small sensor, yes, but less impactful when you are applying effects. The G15 form factor is perfect for this.
Thank you for sharing! Yes, sometimes we don't always need the latest or the greatest, a simple camera like the G15 could probably cover our photography needs. Cheers!
For everyday photography, it is more than enough. I frequently use it for just a simple dinner with my wife or friends. But for serious photography stuff and somewhat technical stuff like landscape, product photographs, and anything that demands high dynamic range, it might not be sufficient.
Awesome video! which would you buy? g12 vs Panasonic Lumix DMC-TZ70 vs powershot SX740HS? starting price is around 100usd vs 50usd vs 50usd (same order) g12 is ccd the others are cmos. Are ccd sensors much better/valuable?!?!?!
I would much prefer something with good handling but still relatively small sized. The G12 isn't bad, and maybe I will choose it because the controls are really good, it's a fun camera(I used it before) and there's that flipping screen which is really handy for me. CCD isn't better in my opinion, it's just a different look and maybe you can experiment in post processing to get that same look.
@@Gary_W thanks for your answer :) in the end i went for the g12. All cameras ended up around 100usd. I guess I picked it because of the build quality seemed the tankiest. Iam really gonna try carry it with me everywhere and not be so careful with it 😜
Mit oldest camera is a Fujifilm Finepix f30 a 6 Mpx rapid camera with 1.1/6" sensor that has a Super CCD, and has a battery that lasts 560 shots. Dinamic range is Something fenomenal ...
I enjoy using a Kodak C653 - a very entry level point and shoot camera with only 6 MP. Still, I like how it feels in the hand, it is fun to use, and produces images with beautiful colors in bright light. I use it more than my Canon G10.
Greetings from Brazil. Nice vídeo, thanks! I have many cameras, including the Canon G9 and also the G16. I noticed you use the 4:3 aspect ratio in your images. Why not using the 3:2 as this size is possible to set in the G16? In my opinion the images in 3:2 have a more professional look… what do you think about this?
Hello, I do use Micro 4/3 system primarily and I've been very accustomed to 4:3 aspect ratio, because of the "almost square" look that isn't actually totally square and whenever I can I will always set any camera that I have to 4:3. Hope this helps.
I love my G15. My biggest complaint is the auto-lens cover. Dust or grit gets in it, and it has left vertical scratches on my lens which is really disappointing as they often show up as blurs in my photos :( Nevertheless, the photos that I take have a very unique feel, and despite it being a digital camera, I feel it is still quite analog as compared to some rigs today.
Sorry to hear that, it is always annoying to have scratches on the lens. The G15 is now my JPEG camera, very fun to use for casual day to day activities.
I haven't compared the G15 to a G9 but to be honest you can tweak some settings on the picture profile and make your image looks more filmic with the G15.
Thanks for your vídeo, its a good one! Please let me Asking you, ir i use viewfinder to take a pictures, how i do a focus? The viewfinder have any focuspoint? Thanks a lot 👍
Hello, thank you for the kind comment! It does not have any information inside the viewfinder. But there is a small green LED right beside the viewfinder, it will turn on when the camera locks focus. You can see it without taking your eyes off the viewfinder. Hope this helps!
I paid 155 dollars for it yesterday. It was good as new. Used 2 times and i got it with the box manuals and even the CD’s. I live in Sweden where used electronics seems to be a little bit more expensive. I am so happy with it. It is built like a tank. Takes amazing pictures and i really like the aesthetics✌️

Use full manual, shutter speed below 1/1000 for the G15, ISO, aperture and flash power are adjusted for the overall exposure. Hope this helps!
I've seen a few videos about the powershot g9 creating a beautiful filmic look, would you say the g15 is the same or is the g9 better for that?
I haven't compared the G15 to a G9 but to be honest you can tweak some settings on the picture profile and make your image looks more filmic with the G15.
@@Gary_WCan you do a tutorial to achieve that?
@johnyBIEBERpanguito I honestly just use one of the picture profiles, I will get back to you which one, and shoot JPEG, and got the "filmic look"
Well, My Canon 20d is the oldest camera that I use, But been using Olympus ep3 lately!
20D is definitely a very respectable camera during its era! Enjoy the Olympus!
Love my Canon G11
Saya msh pakai g15 om..udah dari 2013 msh running well..emang quality prosumer canon jaman itu bagus bgt ya
Memang mantab banget G15, konstruksinya juga kokoh awet, ga gampang rusak.
@@Gary_W setuju bgt om
Thanks for your vídeo, its a good one! Please let me Asking you, ir i use viewfinder to take a pictures, how i do a focus? The viewfinder have any focuspoint?
Thanks a lot 👍
Hello, thank you for the kind comment! It does not have any information inside the viewfinder. But there is a small green LED right beside the viewfinder, it will turn on when the camera locks focus. You can see it without taking your eyes off the viewfinder. Hope this helps!
A 1/1.7 sensor fits in a cel phone? 🤔
There are even some smartphones with 1" sensor
Get the G10!
YES BUT hipster dufasses have made them SO exspensive no one can afford them compared to a newer camera.
What should you pay for it in 2022 used? 🤔
Vlogging too close to the camera, its not cool bro. keep your distance.. A key advice from graphic designer.
Noted, thank you for letting me know!
