in my opinion lee has some of the best customer service in the industry. I almost bought that mold but then saw the 500gr 😂. Needless to say I have been playing with that and a .450 bushmaster. The funnel into the water quenching is ingenious.

Something I advise doing when casting long 45/70 bullets in double cavity molds is to not to drop them out too quickly. If the lead hasn't cooled sufficiently to solidify the bullets can bend banana shaped as they drop. I hold the mold open for 10 seconds or so before quenching.

I also started using a hot plate to preheat my big molds (6 cavity molds). I use medium heat. It will help with casting blemishes due to a cold mold.

It's not hard just watch some videos and learn the basics first. Fortunecookie45lc has some awesome step by step casting videos. He is a pro. Thank you for your support of my channel and kind comments.

    Well done!
Build a stack of wood to place the mold just below the furnace's nozzle,
keeps the strain off when running a full pot or more.
Drop those sprues right back in the pot.
The Lee 340 may serve ya well and saves a bunch of lead over time.

I like the idea of supporting the pot. That never dawned on me, but the sprue right back in the pot caused me to get the one good burn I've gotten casting. Splash got me. That broke me from doing that. I decided a little more time putting sprue back in was worth not risking a bigger splash and a more serious burn. Great idea on the pot support tho, I will employ that!!😁

I have the same inexpensive Lee pot which performs admirably. I also cast for my 45-70 Guide Gun with an RCBS 305 FNGC bullet which I water quench. Alloy is linotype, BHN 22. Size to .459", swage on a gas check, and lube with Thompson Blue Angel hard lube. Makes a nice shooting load.

I really love working with these large bore old calibers and molding projectiles and reloading the rounds. My favorite of my rifles I reload for at the moment is my Martini Henry .577/.450 that thing is almost as fun to reload as it is to shoot.

On bottom pour lead furnaces as the level of the lead lowers you will get decreased flow rate in just about any lead furnace. You also mentioned you were planning to shoot black powder. You will need to lubricate the bullets even though you powder coated the bullets. The lube is needed to keep the black powder soft. You will need a black powder lube or the fouling will get hardened and accuracy will be reduced.

I'll take that under advisement. I cast a lot of bullets for my Martini Henry shooting black powder and so far no issues with fouling. In a muzzleloader I'm not sure on but that's why they call it science lol...

Good vid….I had to laugh a bit watching you cast, then talk about safety. Kiddos to telling folks to be safe and NOT do it the way you did. I pretty much cast like you, no water quenching yet, it seems like a good idea. What 45-70 do you use…?

Wash with dawn and blow dry with compressed air. I also smoke my mold. I use synthetic to cycle oil to lubricate the mold (pins and spure plate). I’ll also wipe the top of the mold with oily cloth while the bullets are still in their cavities but the spure plate is open. Seems to work well as it keeps oil out of the mold cavities. I started casting to support my big bore air gun shooting. I have 2 air rifles that cast for, One shoots .309 cast slugs & the other shoots .457 (.458).
If you’re wondering how powerful is an air rifle, it’s surprisingly powerful. Check out this video.

Hello sir. I'm looking into start casting for 45-70, but I have a question. If you powder coat the bullet at the end, do you size it yo .457 and the coating will add some material to bring it up to .458 ? Or you size it after you powder coat it to .458? Commercial bullet makers like SNS casting are listing their 45-70 bullets as .459. I am wondering what bullet sizing die I need to get. .458 or 459 ?
    Thanks.

Very good question. Always powder coat then size to your bore. In large bore rifles such as 45-70 I recommend you slug your bore and go from there. When you powder coat even if you see some shiny spots after sizing you'll still be fine. I myself have some .45 caliber issues when casting. I shot 45-70,.45 long colt, and .577/.450 martini Henry. So I have to cast several sizes of .45 I appreciate your question and I will be posting some casting videos very soon.

@@Fatman0815 I will be sending these from a modern day Henry side gate model X. I think they are .457 but I have never slugged a barrel to verify. I did fire some factory SNS coated cast .459 405gn and they group well with no leading whatsoever. Man I tell ya, this casting side of reloading is a deep rabbit hole on its own 😄Thanks for sharing your insight.

You'll be fine. Reloading is like driving on the interstate. Pick a lane and stay there til you know you can handle the lane change. Have fun, enjoy it, but read as much as possible. And most important when reloading never except 1 manual as gospel. Refer to atleast 3 when working up a load and find a start point that way. Good luck God speed...thanks for your support
