- How does bump mapping work?
Bump maps are one of the oldest form of image map types and have been used for decades to add surface relief to models. Bump maps are not very resource-intensive, making them a popular choice for a wide range of relief work.
The catch with bump maps is that they cannot render corner or edge detail, which makes them problematic in certain situations, for example adding brick detail to a corner edge. Bump maps are by far the easiest type of relief image to manage as they work with practically any surface, no matter the geometry.
What does a displacement map do?
Displacement maps, although they can be derived from the same type of image as a bump map, are much more powerful. They can truly deform geometry up to and including edge detail, making them ideal for a much wider range of uses such as terrain creation (sometimes a displacement is called a height map for large-scale deformation) and detail modelling.
The reason that displacement maps are not as commonly used is that they can be computationally intensive and they tend to like high-resolution geometry to work with, which can make them less than ideal for some tasks.
Either way, understanding bump and displacement maps will enable any artist to add detail to their models more quickly and intuitively than through other image-based methods.

Actually this is the first time i didn't skip a video !!! Really direct and great way to explain 👍
Displacement was driving me bonkers and I've been using vrat for max for years. The whole apply the mat to the group worked. It was a WTF moment. Kudos.
Lot of time looking for this solution. Thank you very much!
Thank you 🙂, this is the best explanation, not too slow not too fast, or annoying to continue, it is great and on point 👌
Mannnnnnnn! Thank you!
We hope to have you back on youtube
You just solved all my problems.
Well explained. Great 👍
Thanks 😉
Perfect. Just what i was looking for. very well explained. Many thanks.
Thank you. Glad I helped
That's exactly what I wanted to say. Stay safe ,..man:)
Crisp and clear cut explanation. Thanks,🙏
Wow!! Finally I understand this. My Sketchup/ Vray skills just hit puberty!
😂😂😂😂😂
Glad You like it
Omg broooo. You just chnage my world with groups and Components with Displacement omg!
Glad I was helpful
thanks a lot.. i was wondering why the displacement was not working.. perfect videos for starters like me
Glad it helped
Thanks for this. Excellent job. 👍
I appreciate your comparison of bump and displacement maps. It looks like displacement maps will make for larger files as it is creating geometry. That being said, if you were making a scene with several sky scrapers, would bump maps be sufficient?
Great with answers to all the important but undescribed issues that caused me frustration from other videos!
Do you also have a good description of how to create large surfaces and avoid repetitions - for instance, a large brick wall?
arkadaşım, en içten teşekkürlerimi sunarım
Thanks a lot, I just trying to solve this problem, You are so helpful man
I'm glad you liked it 😀
and welcome to the channel!
Okay, but how do you create the disp./bump maps from scratch. Lets say for a carpet?
FANTASTIC!
Many thanks!
thanks man you helped me a lot
Thank u for the clear explanation sir
Just what I need! Thank you!!
You're so welcome!
Thank you!!!
exactly what i wanted. thank you!
Glad it helped!
thank you
this one video help me a lot, thanks man ...keep up, subscribed, do some video like this no one does
Glad it helped
Thank you 👍
hi~I want to know how to move the map to the right position?
Beautiful brother . its very nice can you please make more video like this on v-ray setting. its very help full . thanks
Can i ask where to get Displacement and Bump Map?
Perfect. Thank you
You're welcome!
Ok, now where to find Displacement tool if there is none?
good job mate thank you
No problem 👍
Nice!
Do a video like that but for rock or gravel
Displacement Maps dont work any more on the version im using. does any body have an alternative ? i have this pop up telling me some thing but i dont know were to look " This is a legacy attribute that will be removed in the future. consider using the geometry displacement modifier instead. it can be created as a geometry asset in the outliner and can then be applied to objects in the scene. note that displacement effect will no longer appear in the priview swatch"
Thank you so much
Thanks for watching 😉
Thank you a lot for this tutorial!! keep doing!
Thanks, will do!
Thanks for video, you can make video about make material.
Can we add different displacement or bump map like wrinkle map on a cloth texture and how do we controlle it's size, can we increase or decrease the wrinkles, can't find it how?
You can add all kinds of images as a bump or displacement map. Watch the video once more, cause that is exactly what I'm talking about
THANK YOU BRO :))
You're welcome!
can i ask for the link of the texture you used in this video?
I don't have Bump and Displacement Maps, how can I create them?
You can create them with image editing software, like Photoshop, or, and this is maybe easier, download them from the internet
i applied all setting as you, but bump/displacement are not working in software sir, please give any suggestion or give me any solution sir
Your bump material needs to be in a separate group containing only that material. And that material needs to be applied to the outside of the group. If you have more than 1 material inside a group, bump and displacement won't work.
@@SketchupStyle thank you so much sir
a nice awesome good great
tuyệt vời
Pls set your voice setting on 7.1 headset you speak at my behind :D :D:D :D
