I always though of Oogie boogie as a hive mind of bugs, where the main bug is “fed” other bugs and creepy crawlies. Giving him more power and abilities. So in order to revive him, you’d only need the main bug, and the sack. The rest of the bugs would be bathed in the formula so that the “mind bug” could control them and add them to his body
Tim Burton had gone on record saying he doesn’t like how they are adding to Nightmare Before Christmas, he says sequels and prequels are unnecessary and not canon, he doesn’t like how Disney is treating the series these days.
The're is nothing wrong with add to a rich world . Yes it is perfect when left alone but one art is produced it belongs to the audience not the artist. Which when a world created such a loved nd cherished thing. It should be those people that keep it tributes growing in our timeline. Sadly Hollywood will.often hire people that are not in love with the work on purpose so instead of care the new artist make it their own changing things. Instead of respect the original works. Erogon movie, third season if the Witcher netflix. This is a huge list. But one that got it right Vampire hunter D , to vampire hunter D bloodlust . (Made by people thr truly cared for the original work)
1:14:04 I’d say that, just as the meaning of a holiday changes, so does the person that embodies that meaning. Halloween used to be about fearing the supernatural (reflected on the old pumpkin king), but now it’s a more fun holiday. Still scary, but fun. So I’d say that as long as Jack reflects the spirit of Halloween, he’ll be the pumpkin king. The mayor takes care of running the city, and Jack of halloween itself Edit: Oogie may have had the potential of becoming evil, but it didn’t mean he would be evil when he grew up. But because of the influence and actions of Edgar, Oogie became that. Just like in real life, people influence us as we grow
I love this overview, and I do believe that it is possible for Jack and the other members of Halloween town to die but not in a traditional sense so jack does stay in the movie when he’s in the graveyard after just getting shot down” in 1 million years they’ll find me only dust” which does show that he will age and die
Just wanna say, this creator is my single most loved creator for the simple reason of she does justice to everything I loved when I was very little and does it all very nicely.
Lock, shock and barrel. Their names are the representation of the way they died. Lock was locked in a freezer, Shock was electrocuted to death and barrel was shove into a barrel. You can also see it in their appearance. Lock looks like he's frozen, shock's hair looks electrocuted and barrel i still need to search for that
i thought Barrel went with her costume. something to do with the messed up parameters of what made a "witch" or the way that the witch hunt did away with "witches." being tossed in a barrel into a river and if she (blanks) she's a "witch."
Fun thing to note: Oogie Boogie Does refer to Santa as "Sandman", right before dropping him and Sally into the boiling pool in his lair. (I know this could be a complete oversight by the directors/writers, but it's fun to think about regardless)
Aww we both saw The Nightmare Before Christmas when it first came out. I was 3. My mom still talks about how much I loved it when we left the theater. I definitely have some memory of it because I could not stop watching it when I started getting older. Great analysis as usual. ❤
I am a bit older, in that I was around 9 when Nightmare Before Christmas came out... (In my case, I had the early childhood terror of parents apparently taking me to "Pinocchio and the Emperor of the Night" in the theater, which was a bit too much for me at the time; but having re-watched it more recently, it doesn't really match the fragments that still exist in my memory, which almost seem more like something out of Hellraiser or similar; but I am at a loss as to what other movie it could have been, and parents said it was not the same movie, but both were animated and did involve Pinocchio in any case, so don't know what it could have been exactly if not this one, and not the original Disney movie, ...). Still, this video seems like a nice and well thought out analysis...
Disney did NOT create any of the original characters, Tim Burton did. Disney didn't even want it known as a Disney movie until it became a cult classic and was very popular. Before that it was always considered a Touchstone Pictures film. According to Burton the only thing that is cannon is the original movie and dislikes everything Disney has created since.
I don’t think you understand what a “cult classic “ is. This movie was popular from the jump. A cult classic is a movie that was not financially successful or shunned by mainstream audiences. Only to find a niche group that adores the film and becomes a dedicated audience. Thus being able to make up some or all of the original financial loss up; sometimes many many years after the film’s original release.
@ it cost 18million to make and made 50million with initial release. I’m 42, I saw it in theatres-it was popular from the beginning. It may have gotten more popular with vhs/dvd. But, that’s not what a CC movie 🎥 is. Just take the L dude.
I swear every Xmas i go nuts buying nightmare before Christmas merch, this year im chilling listening to the vid watching the nightmare before Christmas with a warm cup of jack skeletons coffee blend but truly this movie and books even games have hidden deep lore that ee all adore to explore.
It makes a lot more sense if you go with the Canadian location of Thanksgiving (which was a generic harvest festival at varying times before its finalized form) Thanksgiving is near Oct 11th in Canada which lines up much better with the leaves state in Hallowe'en town and harvest Town and the harvest period.
“ jack has kids” this is true as in the new book “the pumpkin queen” shows that sally had grown up because she has parents, this could mean that they could grow up too!!!
He probably won't because he said this about it "he doesn't need to make more money from a sequel because he's had so many other successes." But then again a year later he came up with a hot garbage that is Beetlejuice Beetlejuice so you never know.
1:03 I feel that's a bit of a misunderstanding. I, personally, don't think that he was intrigued by the act of kissing itself in that moment, but the fact that the kiss happened right after the elves had hung mistletoe, implying a connection between the two.
37:46 So, I grew up in Québec, Canada. We have the Bonhomme Sept-Heures (the seven o'clock man) to scare children. I was so devastated to see he doesn't have a Wikipedia entry!! (Even on French Wikipedia, his article is incomplete.) The Bonhomme Sept-Heures is a scary vagabond who wanders into towns at 7 pm, making sure kids are in bed. Any that aren't in bed by 7 get shoved in his large sack and taken away, never to be seen again. The Bonhomme Sept-Heures is said to be a massive, old, hairy dark man, wearing a thick coat and a wiiiiide brim hat. And, of course, the obligatory sack to take the children. I was so scared of him that I would run to bed before 7 pm. I wasn't sleepy though (insomniac even as a child), so I would wait until the coast was clear (8 pm) and get out of bed again. Like the cold Canadian winter winds, the Bonhomme Sept-Heures comes out of nowhere and can take things away. Some adults swear up and down that they've seen him when they were out late as children. They were able to run home to safety in time before he caught them, though. Legend has it-so I've heard-that the term Bonhomme Sept-Heures is a misinterpretation of the English word "bone-setter," in other words, a doctor of some kind. I assume this this refers to some kind of surgeon who fixes broken and/or dislocated bones. This doctor would come and fix the bones of the adults and "strong men" of the house and make them scream in pain, causing terror in children. So legend has it, anyway... Sorry. This was long. Abby asked about boogeymen, and I had to tell the Bonhomme Sept-Heures' story (since Wikipedia doesn't have anything about him)... TL;dr - I grew up with a boogeyman called the Bonhomme Sept-Heures. I was sure to be in bed by 7pm to avoid being kidnapped by him.
Great video. After your Coraline big chunk I had to read the book again, dewatch the movie and I wa listening to the audiobook for weeks. GJ! Really impressive and immersive.
I dont think the grim reaper is really a grim reaper. I think citizens in Halloween town is created by stories in the human world and they’ll die. The grim reaper is just shape like it. They have to find ways to human world during the festival so they all have their own portals. I focus on the original movie here, Oogie Boogie was a bug leader that leads his bugs team to the human world. And they might try new tricks every year like the other citizens and discover a better way to scare human is become a sack of bugs and they have great team work. Those bugs need food too. Their food will be those new bug they catch. I think Oogie doesn’t care about other festivals like the sequel. They love the place they born. Oogie would torture human through dreams like they have infinite nightmares. Cus he definitely has multiple aspects on himself. Bugs, spiders, snakes, weird sack, gambling nightmare, dark shadow, creepy voice. You thought it’s a fun dream but turn out worst.
Santa has a lot of work to do with checking on children and his list, I would also suspect Mrs. Clause is running the town itself as Santa leads the festivities.
I'm pretty sure Lock's tail is real. I'm pretty sure I've seen it move in a scene. Check out the Kidnap Sandy Claws song. After Barrel gets catapulted through the door, when Lock goes to help Shock pick him up, his tail is wiggling around. Also, it doesn't drag on the ground behind him.
I personally dont think of halloween town as a place where the dead go...this logic breaks apart when you think of the other holidays. The realms seem to be places that embody the holidays. Like the spirit of christmas is what christmas town is and likewise for the other holidays.
The nature of oogie boogie's existence when it comes to his bugs keeps me up at night. Like is he a hive mind? Are the bugs like his cells? Is it both or something different? How is he both an individual and a collective? Also he has a snake tongue (a.k.a not a bug) is that also part of him? Why is the spoopy children's movie giving me an existential crisis on the nature of self and consciousness?
I absolutely love your voice, it itches a my brain perfectly, I love listening to your videos while doing my day to day tasks, good job and keep up the great work!
I saw the movie when it first came out, too. I was 13 years old and didn't know what it was about, but I thought it must be good since it's a Christmas cartoon. I wasn't expecting it to be an all-singing opera. I was bored out of my mind. It was my biggest movie-viewing regret until 2002 when I regretfully went to see Eight Crazy Nights with a friend. Nice video! I like the narrator's voice.
You have a beautiful and soft voice and the detail you go into for the nightmare before Christmas is so cool. You can definitely tell a fan is behind the voice
i watched the coraline version of this but i had also watched all the individual coraline videos before so at least for this one it's a whole new thing for me
Jack and Sally really didn't plan their wedding date very well, marrying two weeks before Halloween. They really said you know what the best time to get married is? Literally like the day before we have to start going really hard on our only job! That way there's zero time to ease in, adjust, or process anything! And we have to rush through our honey moon in one day. They were really setting Sally up for an identity crisis. Also, unrelated, but I love that Sally seems to have the ability to masterfully sew at such impressive speed. I wonder if all ragdolls have a natural talent for it, it would make sense.
On Tooth Fairy Town: I don't think it would be that scary. Think of the Tooth Fairy being a beautiful queen with pastel, glittery fairy wings and an ivory throne shaped like a pristine tooth. There could be sweet little mice creatures and flower-like fairies who grow peppermint and spearmint, making it into toothpaste. There could be a mine for harvesting the metal that makes braces and tooth crowns. Maybe the citizens all have little crowns as a pun! Every building is made of shiny white marble and ivory, and theyre cleaned with toothbrushes and tiny jets of water from hoses held up by the small citizens. It could be a pastel, glittering, minty-smelling place with fresh air instead of anything creepy or terrfying.
Now, I got the real reason why Sally feels so restless all the time, because of the rough dead leaves she was stuffed with and feeling trapped in to the idea that she was one of Dr. Finklestein's creations. Dr. Finklestein was the reason that Halloween Town was out of the loop about there being other Holidays besides theirs, so that no one can find out about Sally's kidnapping from Dreamland? But if that had been the case, he'd have to be one of the first oldest few of the residences of Halloween Town, it would only make better sense that he was the one who brought Edgar to life, so I deduce that the real power behind Halloween was Finkelstein all along, up until he was discovered to be the Evil he actually is and Edgar was his failed experiment.
I played the game last year and I got to say it was quite fun, also love these long videos, they give me somethign fun to listen to while I work on stuff.
On the topic of Pumpkin King, the video game says that Jack has only been the king for a year before the movie (which feels very very inconsistent with how the residents exclaim over how great he is at being Pumpkin King), so if we take into account the video game was canon, then the status of Pumpkin King is something that can be moved from person to person instead of it being the manifestation of the spirit of Halloween
Honestly, I used to be afraid of Halloween (not that brave of a kid). But seeing Jack and how fun Halloween could be, I saw it in a new light and fear turned to wonder XD
Glorious ⭐️!!! Let’s see how many more of our favorites will turn into a long video 😁! Hmmm…. Does abitfrank enjoy Over the Garden Wall? Corpse Bride? Frankenweenie? Jack and the Cuckoo Clock Heart?
Plot twist: Jack can be the Pumpkin King because his head is secretly a white pumpkin. If we take the ending of the movie into consideration it stands to reason that Oogie is still corrupted because he's still filled with magic bugs. It could be that the thing linking those world to the mortal realm isn't the sky but the moon. I'm not sure about all of them but Halloween, Xmas, Valentines, and even the 4th of July all have connections to nighttime and/or the moon. The fireworks are only used when it's dark enough to see them, the full moon is considered romantic, yet also frightening in the case of Halloween, Santa delivers the presents under the light of the moon on xmas eve, etc. Also I don't think the trees in Halloween town are dormant like in winter I think they're just supposed to be dead. So Thanksgiving town doesn't really cause any issues there.
With death being there also makes sense as he has become a figure himself in Halloween as well on costumes t shirts and more decor so he was naturally welcome in Halloween town?
Lock Shock and Barrel call themselves, Boogie's boys and they only seem unique and different compared to the other citizens of Halloween Town, because these three trick-or-treaters, might have died almost a year before the opening of the movie's story. Boogie's boys are just a fan club they made just for themselves, and Oogie Boogie doesn't seem to even acknowledge this or the trio's existence, he didn't seem aware of them after having been sewn back together, which is a major plot hole in the game "The Nightmare Before Christmas: Oogie's Revenge".
I've always thought Lock, Shock & Barrel are The Sanderson Sisters who ended up there in some way as children. They always used children to stay young...seems fitting.
I always took "boogy's boys" as mortal kids, still alive But somehow time trapped. The mayor is visibly disturbed and frightened of them, which to his credit the whole identity of halloween town is to scare people, and these kids are immune, not only immune but brave (or foolish/cocky) enough to attack him with a sling shot. The only one they seem to find scary is Jack, and possibly Boogy as *might* be suggested by the idea of staying on his good side. As another point on this, the mayor refers to them as "boogy's BOYS" tho one of them is obviously a girl (I'm stepping away from controversial topics here and STRICTLY taking it at story level). This would suggest a lack of understanding or exposure on top of his fear of them. He doesn't understand them because they are native to this place, they aren't like anything else here. (I do think ither beings there are alive, live the witch, the lagoon creature, and with caviots, the mad scientist who may also not be a halloweennative, but stange enough to be basically on the same level.) Anyway, them not being native, not being afraid, and the only exposure to kids the mayor would have had would be from kids screaming and running away. To top that off, traditionally and stereotypically, boys/guys/men are generally seen as more courageous in writing (tho a balance closer now than it once was). So in conclusion, the mayor knows on a base level what these *things* are, but they are too different for him to understand, as if to him they are some unexplainable being that his brain cannot handle, so he instead settles for the generic, tho inaccurate and stereotype driven group name of "Boogy's Boys." This is of course only able to be based on a single individual, unfortunately. Both Jack and Boogy do not share this fear, and likely also do not share his ignorance on the subject. It would be interesting to see other reactions to them, but as far as I recall that's really it. Aside from Santa who would likely only see them as "naughty children" which is both accurate and driven by a close experience than that of the mayor. Anyway, my thumb is tired, maybe I should have typed this on my keyboard at my PC instead. But that's all I can think of at the weary hours of typing this. Hope someone fond this helpful, enlightening, thought provoking, or at least entertaining. And to those who read this far, thank you and gave a good day/night/other!
so an interesting tidbit on Oogie Boogie, if you look at the concept art book for the movie, Oogie Boogie was originally supposed to be Dr. Finkelstein disguising himself as Oogie Boogie to punish both Sally and Jack
I have done some Tim Burton-style drawings myself; but, I don't always normally have much knack for making full torso drawings as prominent, so I mostly did head/bust drawings of the characters. The thing that I don't get is why are Jack's friends worried about Jack's death if he was already dead to begin with, when it is in turn also impossible for them to die again?
All those plots to ruin Christmas stop Santa steal. Christmas. Jack did came closed actually stoping Santa and replacing jolly stuff with scary stuff. What many villains only dream about. And wasn't even trying . As he said in his Lemate. I excell without every even trying
I don't think "Oogie's boys" are part of Halloween Town. Correct me if I'm wrong, but those kids don't appear anywhere in the opening song. I feel like that implies they aren't part of the town.
14:25 but we do know by the door different world can enter each other so the child could be from any other door Jake could have take in the lost orphans
Haven't finished the video, but you say that nothing can grow or age in Halloween Town and mention Dr. Finkelstein making Sally, but this video comes after the video you made about the prequel to NBC where it's revealed that Sally was born to the royals of the sleep town responsible for dreams. What would dictate who could create new life or not though?
I don't think Thanksgiving is exactly a season oriented Holliday in the same sense as some of the other Holidays, it is more of a season change oriented Holiday, which kind of represents the changing of the day's number on the fourth Thursday of the Month every year, which means, that Holiday's world actually goes through a 2 1/3 season cycle and gets the winter season and early-Spring to mid-Spring off.
I don’t think death could be the true ruler of Halloween town for the sole reason that death is a universal force, it exists everywhere at all times it’s not just a single holiday spirit it’s a constant force. If anything I think the reaper just likes to vibe in Halloween town because nobody is actually afraid of death there so the reaper could probably have friends with people instead of then begging not to be taken or crying for mercy about unresolved issue’s
I have a theory that lock shock and barrel killed themselves Lock froze himself to death in a freezer Shock electrocuted themself An barrel well shot himself with his dads gun
1:15:57 Or did he turn into the wind itself after death like in This Is Halloween lyric: "I am the wind blowing through your hair" represented in the movie with wind and leaves blowing Sally's hair before we see Oogie's shadow
Understandable, but I think it's great that Disney is acknowledging this film and expanding its world.
Wasn't the film largely not his work to begin with? You kind of have to deal with stuff like this when you sign your rights away to Disney.
@gregzotter6189 because, yes, Disney is well known for respecting their IP
The're is nothing wrong with add to a rich world . Yes it is perfect when left alone but one art is produced it belongs to the audience not the artist. They age extremely slow
You have such a creepy yet calming voice perfect for this
I always figured during Jack's lament when he say "here lies poor old jack" that he was being over dramatic.
Just wanna say, this creator is my single most loved creator for the simple reason of she does justice to everything I loved when I was very little and does it all very nicely.
56:40 I’d say it didn’t wilt because it was given to her. The rose petals were taken, without permission

I think lock, shock, and barrel are naughty kids caught by boogie that embraced their naughty nature completely and are now zombie/undead types 🤷🏼♂️
I love these videos so watch them whenever there is a new one ❤️❤️
I love how Oggie Boogie is a boogie man…kinda based on a sack man…& his “skin” is made from a sack stitched at the seams

I came up with an interesting theory. What if the singing skeleton dude from Corpse Bride is the great grandfather of Jack.
that’s actually a pretty good theory

This has all been SO FANTASTIC!!! 💜
i watched the coraline version of this but i had also watched all the individual coraline videos before so at least for this one it's a whole new thing for me
you are my new bed time TH-camr!!! ur voice is so soothing I love it!!!! it rlly helps me sleep lol
Just found the channel. Binging!!!
amazing stuff
Jack and Sally really didn't plan their wedding date very well, marrying two weeks before Halloween. They really said you know what the best time to get married is? Literally like the day before we have to start going really hard on our only job! That way there's zero time to ease in, adjust, or process anything! And we have to rush through our honey moon in one day. They were really setting Sally up for an identity crisis.
Also, unrelated, but I love that Sally seems to have the ability to masterfully sew at such impressive speed. I wonder if all ragdolls have a natural talent for it, it would make sense.
What a dive indeed.
On Tooth Fairy Town:
I don't think it would be that scary.
I freaking loved the whole thing. Thank you for sharing your research and knowledge with everyone!
I have the CD you’re talking about somewhere!!
I played the game last year and I got to say it was quite fun, also love these long videos, they give me somethign fun to listen to while I work on stuff.
I really enjoyed this video 😊 thanks for taking the time to make it 😊
Really enjoyed this! Thank you for making the video!
Love love love love love this movie
I was surprised it took you this long to realize that Jack had kids
On the topic of Pumpkin King, the video game says that Jack has only been the king for a year before the movie (which feels very very inconsistent with how the residents exclaim over how great he is at being Pumpkin King), so if we take into account the video game was canon, then the status of Pumpkin King is something that can be moved from person to person instead of it being the manifestation of the spirit of Halloween
For Christmas can you do the origins of the Nutcracker
My theory is oggie boggie used to be Santa's sack but Santa replace him with a fancy red sack when he got old
Honestly, I used to be afraid of Halloween (not that brave of a kid). But seeing Jack and how fun Halloween could be, I saw it in a new light and fear turned to wonder XD
My birthday is so close to Halloween it was hard for me to be too scared of it
This video deserves a lot more views
Lovely video.
56:25 i could argue its because the clover was magic, while the flowers from Valentine's world was just flowers
Yeah tryna knock out this what I need lmao
Probably gotta watch it twice tho when I wake uo
Glorious ⭐️!!! Let’s see how many more of our favorites will turn into a long video 😁!
Hmmm…. Does abitfrank enjoy
Over the Garden Wall?
What was in ooogy before the bugs
YES
I loved this, pure serotonin!! ty
Theory idea: one of the trees is Dia De Los Muertos, and these residents get the unique opportunity to travel to Halloween town
So in conclusion, the mayor knows on a base level what these *things* are, but they are too different for him to understand, as if to him they are some unexplainable being that his brain cannot handle, so he instead settles for the generic, tho inaccurate and stereotype driven group name of "Boogy's Boys."
This is of course only able to be based on a single individual, unfortunately.
And to those who read this far, thank you and gave a good day/night/other!
man i love abitfranks channel
so an interesting tidbit on Oogie Boogie, if you look at the concept art book for the movie, Oogie Boogie was originally supposed to be Dr. Finkelstein disguising himself as Oogie Boogie to punish both Sally and Jack
Am I watching while sipping hot cocoa out of my Coraline mug? Yes. Yes, I am. 🖤
9:40 missed chance for Spooky Scary Skellingtons
I have done some Tim Burton-style drawings myself; but, I don't always normally have much knack for making full torso drawings as prominent, so I mostly did head/bust drawings of the characters. The thing that I don't get is why are Jack's friends worried about Jack's death if he was already dead to begin with, when it is in turn also impossible for them to die again?
Call me a Plebian if you will, but I would love to see Saturnalia Town. That would be an absolute blast.
Austria, Germany, Czech Repuplic, and Hungary are the one were aware of and celebrate Krampusnacht (Krampus Night). Now you can quote me.
love ur videos
All those plots to ruin Christmas stop Santa steal. Christmas. Jack did came closed actually stoping Santa and replacing jolly stuff with scary stuff. What many villains only dream about.
And wasn't even trying . As he said in his Lemate. I excell without every even trying
I don't think "Oogie's boys" are part of Halloween Town. Correct me if I'm wrong, but those kids don't appear anywhere in the opening song. I feel like that implies they aren't part of the town.
Very informative
Love the Gandalf quote 😂😂❤
37:00 so you're telling me Oogie Boogie is basically Kirby?
14:25 but we do know by the door different world can enter each other so the child could be from any other door Jake could have take in the lost orphans
Great voice and video
I remember that game!!!
:: CORE MEMORY UNLOCKED::
my favorite movie of all time
I don’t think death could be the true ruler of Halloween town for the sole reason that death is a universal force, it exists everywhere at all times it’s not just a single holiday spirit it’s a constant force.
If anything I think the reaper just likes to vibe in Halloween town because nobody is actually afraid of death there so the reaper could probably have friends with people instead of then begging not to be taken or crying for mercy about unresolved issue’s
I feel Oogie Boogie and The Beldam would be besties
Nice Video love it! But one question: Why there's a graveyard if no one can die? Did I miss a point, English isn't my first language haha
Just for the vibes
During that wiki scroll of the boogy men across the world, im glad to see the Babau that my mother scared me with as a kid in Malta is there haha
Did...did Disney base King Magnifico on the Sandman?
You're so awesome
If I could go into any of the door its still the Halloween door. like if you agree if you want to I guess lol. :P
Maybe the clover doesn't wilt because the leprechaun gave it to her.
56:00 Because he's one of the fae folk.
I have a theory that lock shock and barrel killed themselves
Lock froze himself to death in a freezer
Shock electrocuted themself
An barrel well shot himself with his dads gun
"Unlike America, everyone has a house... with a clear dome" I see what you did there.
1:15:57 Or did he turn into the wind itself after death like in This Is Halloween lyric: "I am the wind blowing through your hair" represented in the movie with wind and leaves blowing Sally's hair before we see Oogie's shadow
Also excellentlt done video thank you front nd back of the housr
