Same in powerlifting. It's supposed to help reduce cortisol & allow you to really bite down & exert maximum force.

Non armwrestlers should know Sam Harris took advantage of the modified WAL pads, as it favors people that pull backwards. Real table specs have an EVEN 7x7 pad, so it would be interesting to see them do a rematch on a standard table.

Side note, this was an attacking kings move, instead of just hiding beneath the table until your opponent is worn out with your arm extended half the match. It's no less of a foul but still different than michael, who's style revolves around his elbow being off the pad, being ignored.
