    This performance needs to be preserved forever. It is magnificent and Celibidache's vision is remarkable. The last movement coda is extraordinary - much slower tempo, violins sounding like a hearbeat (creates a slightly menacing mood), the gradual crescendo (very controlled) and erupting into the most glorious resolution. That Celi can conduct this (and other Bruckner) symphonies from memory is nothing short of genius. I also love that when it has finished he applauds the orchestra, shakes some hands and only then does he face the audience. Multumesc Celi.

      Bruckner is very sensitive to quality of performance - it's easy for his symphonies to come across as ponderous if played on autopilot. This version is brilliant.

    I performed this magnificent symphony years ago with the McGill Symphony Orchestra. As first chair, horn section, i was both thrilled and terrified by the challenges given to the first horn part. I’ve never forgotten the thrill and honour of playing this work. Forever grateful to McGill University for the opportunity. ❤️

    Bruckner, for me is a gient , like Bach, Beethoven and Wagner. His symphonies, are the best of bests. Full of sublime moments. Alos, i think, in future, say 300 years from now, he will be praised more than any other composer from romantic era.

    Celibidache is not only in a league of his own when it comes to music and musicality, but has immensely touching and powerful human qualities, too. He credits everyone at the conclusion, and only then that does he recede into the orchestra to turn around and acknowledge the audience's applause-although as PART of the totality only-not the totality itself. Such people lead and achieve the most in life by surrounding themselves with the best people and never putting themselves above them. His orchestra would do anything for him.

  • @BritinIsrael
    @BritinIsrael 4 ปีที่แล้ว +108

    The most satisfying of all Bruckner conductors. In my opinion his tempi are perfect and he gets inside the score like no other conductor of Bruckner. You can actually here individual instrumental lines that seem hidden behind the full orchestral sound when listening to other conductors' performances. This is a result of the extended rehearsal times. All his recordings are a sheer pleasure to listen to.

    • @davebarclay4429
      @davebarclay4429 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Sorry but I beg to differ. I realise personal taste is a big factor but for me Günter Wand was the most satisfying Bruckner conductor although Bernard Haitink runs him a very close second. Wand's recorded cycle with the Cologne Radio Symphony Orchestra is the one CD set I would try to save if my house caught fire. There is also the problem that Celibidache was an unpleasant, misogynistic individual (google the name Abbie Conant for more details) and at the time this recording was made the Munich Philharmonic was probably still playing Bruckner from scores embossed with the swastika, a legacy of their days at "The Orchestra of the Fascist Movement". Celibidache and the Munich Phil deserved each other.

    • @BritinIsrael
      @BritinIsrael 3 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      @@davebarclay4429 You are entitled to your opinion of course but i try and keep politics out of music no matter how ' evil ' a conductor or composer may be. Wagner and Liszt were obnoxious creatures but they composed great music.
      Furtwangler was an out and out Nazi ( so was Karajan ) but it does not deter people enjoying their performances.

    • @davebarclay4429
      @davebarclay4429 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@BritinIsrael Seriously? Do you think it was acceptable for a major German orchestra to be playing from swastika-embossed scores in the 1980s?

    • @BritinIsrael
      @BritinIsrael 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@davebarclay4429 I'd be happy to know how you have seen such ' engraved' scores in the 80s. I would be very interested in seeing one out of sheer curiosity.
      Surely they must be of value from an historic perspective......like the early paintings of one Herr Hitler.

    • @davebarclay4429
      @davebarclay4429 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      If you do as I said above and google the name Abbie Conant the information is all there. She was the main victim of Celibidache's misogyny which eventually led to litigation. Her husband, William Osborne, wrote a blog about the case in which he makes reference to the swastikas still being on the scores as late as 1991. He corresponded with a Munich councilwoman called Monika Renner who shared his concern and contacted the culture ministry who in turn requested the orchestra to remove the swastikas. I repeat that this was happening in 1991. I have family in Munich and I am fond of the city but recordings of Celibidache and the Munich Phil playing Bruckner or Richard Strauss in the 1980s make my skin crawl.

    Say what you want about the slow tempos and eccentricities, the cool thing about this performance is that there is no autopilot. Every measure, and there are lot of them, is meticulously considered and enjoyed, and the result really does have a mystical quality worthy of the legend. The tempos actually are not that slow--what actually happens is that every so often Celibidache slows things down, sometimes drastically, to widen the musical scope of the work, but the main tempo always resumes eventually. Ultimately it's a very vivid and deep understanding of the work.

    Every Bruckner's coda is a magnificent summary and representation of Catholicism.
    You live, you struggle, you suffer... But there is always room for hope and it all ends in a majestic triumph.
    It is basically what Mahler summarized in his Symphony No. 2: "Was du geschlagen zu Gott wird es dich tragen".
    What you suffered for, it will carry you to God.

    Sublime. Bravo, Brückner; bravo, maestro Celibidache, and bravo, Münchner Philharmoniker. I had not the bliss of attending a live concert conducted by Celibidache, but I certainly can say that listening to this symphony has been one of those transcendental experiences that Celibidache wanted his listeners to have. Thank you very much, maestro, and thank you too, Andrei Popescu, for sharing this video.

      kimweonill, I absolutely agree. It's the same in the first few minutes of the first movement of the 9th, Dvorak's "New World". The sound and tempo of the horns is unequalled.
      It is also important to note that in both cases, Herr Wolgang Gaag, the horn player, has his merit.

      Maybe a possible answer to your question: th-cam.com/video/Dh6vavo7BKA/w-d-xo.html
      He gives a specific value to each interval. First notes of horn create a 5th, the fundamental interval among all the others. And he articulates it differently in the two moments: descending perfect 5th - ascending minor 6th; descending minor 6th - ascending perfect 5th.

    He gets Bruckner. It's in another category, another level. It's useless to argue with those who criticize what they call a lack of "structure". If that is so crucial to the definition of symphohonic art, then why not demand of them the very definition of art itself?

    The problem in bruckners synphonies is to find the right tempi.Especially Celi was an advocate of the slow tempo, especially with bruckner.He contended that Bruckners melodic build up, given the monstrosity of individual contrapuntal sections, must not be too rapid, as it limits the emotional impact on the listener.
    I agree with this argument.
    This recording is a milestone in form of excellent interpretation in every part.Getting involved with Bruckner is extremely difficult.Celi was one of the best Bruckner conductors.And he found the solution.

    I see Abbie Conant still not in the principle trombone chair despite being the clear choice in a blind audition. On finding out she was a woman, Celibidache had her demoted to 2nd trombone. Conant took the orchestra to court an was later reinstated and given back pay as she discovered she was being paid less than the men. This resonates with a recent news story about the music industry still being a “man’s world” riddled with misogyny.

    Only this version justifies the title 'Romantic' while also redefining it:
    the triple tremolos of the finale coda harness the oblique pastoral quality of the symphony into wings beating, as majestic as an eagle's, (listen to the 2012 Sony late recording which makes the comparison obvious, although there it sounds more like a roc) descending (or soaring) and amalgamating with Bruckner and us listeners, accounting for a terrible poignancy.
