As the Harlem Renaissance flourishes in jazzy New York City, Pauline (Vanessa Williams), Esther (Lynn Whitfield) and Alice (Jasmine Guy) struggle to survive. By day, they toil at dreary jobs, dreaming of stardom, riches and happiness. By night, they dance their troubles away at the famous Savoy Ballroom. But when World War II appears on the horizon, the girls find their fortunes unfolding too unevenly to reconcile, and they inevitably begin to drift apart. *******************************************************************************************************

During this period black people may have been poor but they had class and ethics. They didn’t mind working hard even if it was washing dishes. When they got together they weren’t maids and chauffeurs they were kings and queens. The music was phenomenal back then.

work is for slaves, entrepreneurship is the way to go. If u are going to work hard, work hard for yourself. instead of being a slave to a boss, that tell u when to come & go, when to go to the bathroom, eat or take a break. I taught my sons to get a trade that they can use to start a business or just to start a business in something that interests them.

@@peacelover2767 i disagree. There are PLENTY of single parent homes that produce decent law abiding productive members of society. I wouldn't say a black family is ruined because there is no father. Get a grip and stop with the excuses. In general, people are degenerates because yhey make poor choices.

Estelle was so afraid of poverty, and she was so proud that she wanted to take care of herself, that she grabbed and secured money to the point of sacrificing love and friendship for it. She would not have needed to do that. But she had no faith in love. Walter loved her and he was doing well. She indeed loved money even more than herself.
She sabotaged herself and destroyed every good thing she had for a liquor store. When she could have had it all, if she could have seen the value of it. Hers is the sadest story.

I always come back to this movie one of my favorites reminds me of my grandmother and what black women had to go through the ups and down as well as the dance and music of this era of the 1940"s. Black women were classy and sophisticated and they carried themselves with dignity and pride and learn how to have fun and to make the best of sometimes of a bad situation and made it work for their beneifit. Women of this time did what they had to do they were strong and resilient. Most real women didn't come back years later crying about what happen to them they keep it moving.

Could not say any better- My mother was from this time ( well, she was born in 40; and BEAUTIFUL and smart- in every way. We were; classy, and not pretentiously so....it was real, embedded in who we were. We didn't celebrate "ho/b-status", tack weaves, fake lashes, strife-wielding...and thinking this was it....celebrating men who cheat but"take care of home"....aka/translation: foolishness. The era, save the hell of racism at its evilest, sheer elegance. People didn't try to look as tacky as they can and call it cool...we were about progress; thinking for yourself was not only "in", it was reality. Yes ma'am. Well said.

This movies is one of my favorites. The story, the characters, all of it...well done. It's art imitating life or could be life imitating art. Either way, the cast captures the time and plays it effortlessly. It draws me in every time I watch it. The most poignant message I take from it is; life does not guarantee a happy ending, the decisions we make , or don't make, dictate our journey. Death comes to us all sooner or later, and sometimes it lingers before striking. Friends, real friends, will always be at your side. All must learn to acknowledge mistakes and to ask for forgiveness.

Pauline's character was interesting. She was jealous of the other girls' successes before hers because she probably figured that her skin color and hair would have garnered success easily. Yet, she was impressive because she let the boyfriend know that he could not treat her any old way. She could have lived off of men all along because of her looks but didn't, which was true.

One of the number one factors contributing to Black poverty is wait for it.....our generosity. Giving is a part of our nature. Sometimes we give when we don't have it to give. Dorothy had no business dealing with those folks.

I was born in 1999, but I’ve always been a fan of Debbie Allen💕✨ Such a classy woman! Glad this came up on my recommendations, when I found out she directed I was shocked, but not surprised. Multi-talented! Loved this movie and all the women that played in it. In today’s society, it’s like the Great Depression all over again due to Corona and economy. Nothing’s changed...they’ve been making it hard for blacks for decades! My black people, I love you and cherish you♥️ Stay strong 💪🏾

I enjoyed this. Seen it as a child and forgotten about it. I melted when, he told Lynn Whitfield "u slay me" 😊😍🤗
Funny Parts: when dude said BERNICE in his inside voice bc of the white man. I was weak. And (don't kill me for this but:) when Vanessa bell calloway went off saying "it's killing me".....sorry. but I was weak. The situation wasn't funny, but the acting was. 🤷🏿😂
I was mesmerized at the fashion, and the gentleness of the gentlemen. The way he loved sweet pea was definitely unbelievable, but desirable. 🤗
Thanks so much for uploading this movie. I supposed to went to sleep with my 1yr old, but I got caught up in the movie. Now let's see if I can get a couple hrs in b4 he wakey wakey eggs and bakey..😂😂

To me a woman has to do what a woman has to do when it comes to surviving and not to depend on men to fulfill your needs when they change like the weather. Do not fall for the sweet talking Tony or etc. all talking no action plan and no proof. Just sex babies and broken dreams. Strong women need strong men and support not jealous men that do not celebrate with them. That goes both ways.
