    Out of all the diy raised garden beds, this is the oil nly one ive seen that says how to build for a sloping landscape. I live on a hill and was having trouble figuring out how to add a box we without digging out some of the land. Fantastic!

    May I suggest that you place the bottom of your box a few inches below the surface of the ground to keep your water from running out along the bottom edges. Then the packed earth surrounding your box will hold the water much better. With the box sitting on top of the ground, when you water your garden the water will run under the lumber and down hill on the surface of the ground. Also you can build a box with equal height all the way around and just dig a 2-inch wide trench on the high sides to lower that section of the box to match the front. Place your level on the sides/ends of the box, and dig the side and back trenches a little at a time till you get the box level. That'll cost a little more for another 2 pieces of wood for each bed, but will save a lot of sawing and it always looks neat. Removing enough of the top soil within the area of the bed and under the lumber, to include all of the grass and weed roots, will best keep the bed free of grass and weeds coming up from the bottom. You're going to be filling the box with new soil anyway, so what is another 3 or 4 inches of new soil to avoid weeds. Throw the weed and grass contaminated top soil away. I appreciate the time you took to make and post this video.

    Another option would be to use 8' Cedar fence boards. In Louisiana they run about $4.50 per board. I screw two of them together which is about the same as your 2x6's.

    Enjoyed the video, the fact that so many of us are out of work, ( nancy, u reading this? ) any way to save money is appreciated. Absolutely cannot afford the ceder material. Took your advice regarding the linseed oil. Only thing different was to precoat the lumber first! Then cut and assemble , and grow !!!!! Cheers. G.S.

    Great video! I definitely agree with making the fewest cuts possible. I have quite of few tools but why work harder when you can work smarter. I usually build my beds either 2x8 or 4x8. What have you grown in them so far?

    Nice work - those are some beds you can be proud of! One way I've found you can save a little $ on soil is to throw in logs, brush, shredded paper, sticks, leaves, etc. in the bottom half of the bed, then cover with good soil/compost. Over time it all rots into humus.

    The cost of raised bed is mainly in the soil to fill them.
    I live in a large city (Montréal) and I found free composted horse manure for free within 15 minutes drive. Look within your local community to get free ressources. (got free treated lumber from a guy who remove his patio).
    I also plan to get raised bed on the side of a fence. 3 feet wide get you the best ratio area vs length of plank, but still easy to access.

    i don't see how you leveled this other than making the legs different lengths. The ground still had to be uneven and need tweaking i would think. Such as hammering corners to get that perfectly level.
    I do like your makeshift wheelbarrow. Never thought of tote box and hand truck.

    Most videos on here do advocate for cedar because it's a LESS expensive route, not more expensive. If you are using cedar picket fence pieces they are less than $2 each instead of $6 as you chose to purchase. Good video though.

  • @adamtki
    @adamtki 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    To go cheaper, you could've just used 2x4 for the corner posts. Since they're sitting on the ground, that's all the reinforcement they'll need. Plus if you cut them 2 or 3 inches from the top, they won't even be visible after you put dirt in them. Another benefit of using 2x4 posts instead of 4x4 is that they're much easier to cut.

    so everyone knows, boiled linseed oil contains arsenic, beryllium, chromium, cadmium and nickel. its not "boiled" per say. im not sure why they call it that. that being said it looks like once it dries it wont leach into the soil. i havent found any hard proof of this however.

      Glenn Carraway , nothing stopping you to use any of the 30 year weather proof outdoor paint. If you want to die early, most of us don’t give a crap. The government is not there to protect you, they are there to prevent companies from doing harmful things for an extra buck. I grew up in a developing country and there is no government control, there is a mortality rate that is much more than this country .

    Mine were better built but similar design. 3 of 4 collapsed as the weight of the beds with rain caused legs to sink unevenly into soil. Twisted frame under weight of rain and they collapsed at the end of summer. Soil was only 10”.
    They were over built by a carpenter and like tanks.
    If legs sink unevenly your done. I even jacked them up and put all legs on bricks. Still sunk unevenly and twisted and collapsed despite many screws and gorilla wood glue...

  • @brianfranks3123
    @brianfranks3123 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    You should have done 2 things different.
    1. Use Pressure Treated Lumber for outdoor use, then no need to use the Oil you did. (a bit more expensive wood, but no need to use the oil)
    2. Place a landscape fabric over the wire to help keep the soil from spilling out a bit. This will stop weeds, grass, and other things growing if you have ground contact as well. Cardboard is OK in the long run, but at first when you water it, it can cause pooling and runoff!
