  • Hello! Welcome to another sit-down video where I go through every job and wage/salary I’ve had in my 20's so far. In making this, I wanted to contribute to the conversation around salary transparency and hopefully inspire others to get more comfortable talking about financial topics. Unfortunately, I was having crazy allergies (hence the red, swollen eyes) while filming this and also coming down with the flu...so apologies if my energy fell a little flat!
    The book I mentioned, Financial Feminist by Tori Dunlap, was a huge catalyst in my interest in financial literacy, and I encourage you to check it out!

    Talking about money can feel vulnerable- and I definitely feel a bit vulnerable in sharing this! But it’s also important to remember that the amount of money you have/make in no way correlates to your value as a person.
    Thank you so much for joining me, and I hope you enjoyed the video!

      Hey Julia! Thanks for watching, I’m really glad you found it interesting :) In college I majored in English language and literature. I originally chose this because I was considering going to law school (then I changed my mind) and I think it was still beneficial in the sense that it helped me refine a lot of the skills that I use for my job today (research and writing being the biggest). I think the most important thing is learning how to market the skills you build in college to future employers! Let me know if you have more questions I’m always happy to answer!

      I totally feel you. It's really frustrating to have to center life around work. A big part of why I was inspired to start doing youtube videos was because I wanted to feel inspired creatively again after realizing that no matter how hard I worked at my job it was only going to do so much for me, and I was going to have to find fulfillment, purpose, and joy elsewhere. It's a journey, and not an easy one, but I'm wishing you the best :)

      Depends where you live and what cost of living is. Save your money and get a position that pays more. A "high income" is the best financial tool you can have - 120k is the minimum. The most important thing is to maximize your savings per month and dump all the money you aren't investing into a high yield savings account.
      Unless you have some way to make a ton of money quickly, you should be able to retire by 40 and live off the interest from your savings if you do it correctly. It takes a lot of discipline and you have to be in for the grind.

    • @KSWKREW
      @KSWKREW 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      You lost me at high yield savings account. That should be where you keep a 6-12 month emergency fund. Any money saved after that should be put towards low cost blue chip index funds that closely track markets such as the S&P 500, Nasdaq, etc.

    • @chrish40443
      @chrish40443 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@KSWKREWHYSA's can be found with rates around 6% right now. The market may outperform that, but that's not a bad (conservative) average return to expect from the market over the long run, and the funds in a HYSA are protected from economic downturns which is especially helpful for someone who needs low-risk financial vehicles for things like saving for a house down payment, etc.

    This was inspiring, I've been thinking about doing a video like this for a while too, cause the more info that's available the better.
    I'd need to calculate for inflation, but I think my yearly salary when I first started working (18yo) was less than 5k/year (Uruguay, so cost of living and all that is different, but still SUPER low). I'm at 120k/year now and it was quite a ride (cashier at a supermarket, phone support, marketing, software development, etc)

Well my current base hourly rate is $1,105.40 per hour and is increasing by around $50-100 more per hour per month. Just listening to you I say hanging with your boyfriend isn’t doing much for you. My girlfriend has learned a lot from me and now also lives financially independent. So who you hang with can have a big influence on your life and financial success. 2013: $7.35/hr (part-time high school job)
    2014: $20/hr (summer college job)
    2015: $20/hr (summer college job)
    2016: $12/hr (summer internship)
    2017: $37,000 (full-time employment - starting May)
    2018: $38,000 (full-time employment)
    2019: $$39,000 => $55,000 (full-time employment)
    2020: $55,000 (full-time employment - until August)
    2021: $0 (unpaid summer law school internship)
    2022: $3,700 bi-weekly (summer law school internship)
    2023: $225,000 + $20,000 bonus (stub year associate at law firm)
    2024: $225,000 + $20,000 bonus (1st year associate at law firm)
    2025 (Guaranteed Lockstep Increase): $235,000 + $30,000 bonus (2nd year associate at law firm)
    I can assure that you made the right decision turning down the communications assistant position at the law firm. As you mentioned, the ability to work entirely remote is huge given the uncertainty of how long you'd be in NYC. But even if you didn't move to Michigan, I think you would still be happier with the content writer position. I'm assuming the communications assistant position is related to marketing. You would have likely had to deal with internal and hierarchical firm politics that are unique to the law firm setting. This will vary from firm to firm. But as a newly licensed lawyer, working at a law firm in a non-J.D. position as a young professional seems absolutely miserable unless it's in HR, recruitment, or IT.
    I'm curious - in retrospect, if you had taken the law firm position, how much of an impact do you think the hybrid in-person requirement would have on your decision to move to Michigan?

    • @sabrayne
      @sabrayne  หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thank you so much for sharing your progression! I agree that content writing was the right path for me. While law is an intriguing field (I had briefly planned on going to law school), the more I learned about it the more confident I became that it ultimately wasn't for me.
      If I had taken the hybrid role, I think it would have probably forced us to stay in New York. I'm ultimately really grateful for the way things played out though... we moved to Michigan, got a house, and now realize that even if New York costs more, it's where we want to be :) We'll be moving back with a new appreciation for it for sure!

    People say college is useless, but choose degrees that are useless to society. As long as you choose a degree that has a good tuition-to-salary ratio, college is the best decision you could make.

      If everyone became a software engineer your salary expectations would go down. Not everyone can or should be an engineer and just because someone doesn't make a lot of money doesn't make them "useless to society."

    Hi from Beth in California, 32. With the risk of sounding dumb, I want to share… my mother was visiting my house today. She is great, but she worries too much and talks about her problems - even small ones. Lol. When I put your video on TV, she was so interested in watching and listening. She is 63. When the video ended she talked about how pretty and interesting you are. It was a nice moment🙂 New subscriber! …I don’t know what you believe about yourself and your channel, friend. what a breath of fresh air. There are too many gurus selling these unrealistic and inflated numbers nowadays. whats worse is that people buy it. many gurus on here selling people on "instagram" like success at 19 while somehow needing to sell you courses. Making good money by being societal filth and praying on the self deprecation of the rest thats further magnified under the social media era where people only show the good of their lives.

    i'm assuming your major was communications? i've been out of school for a while and want to go back, but my main issue is having no specific major or career in mind. would you say communications allows for a broad selection of jobs?

    • @sabrayne
      @sabrayne  15 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      My major was English! but, yes, communications is very similar. In my experience, a lot of jobs will look for people in a range of majors and communications, marketing, english, etc are all grouped together! The important thing is being able to "market" yourself and your skills to show how they align with your desired job :) best of luck in going back to school!!

  • @jackdanielson1997

    In terms of whether it is a good idea to share this info with friends/family, I'd say it depends on who it is and on how much you make. If you make significantly more, some people can start acting differently towards you in negative ways. I know from experience and wish certain people didn't know because they like to act like I owe them something and guilt trip me. I'd say be careful who you share your salary with, especially when you start making more money.

    I'm 34 and in Australia so this is all in AUD, but it's also all including Superannuation (similar to your 401k, but it's mandatory here all employers have to pay into your fund). But thought it would be good for others who come across your video to see more salary progressions.
    For context I work in IT, my first few jobs were casual. Casuals in Australia earn more per hour but it's harder to get hours. Also for the full time jobs, it's very common for full time workers in Australia to be on Enterprise Bargaining Agreements with their employers, which define annual salary increases based on CPI (the rise in the price of goods and services/inflation).
    2005: $17/hr (but I could only get 7 hours a week)
    2006: $19/hr (same as above)
    2007: $19/hr & $12/hr (2 different jobs, both around 7 hours each)
    2008: $19/hr & $10/hr (2 different jobs, just one job changed)
    2009: $21/hr & $10/hr (same 2 jobs as 2008)
    2010: $28k/year (First IT job)
    2011: $60k/year (2nd IT job)
    2012: $65k/year (same job)
    2013: $68k/year (same job)
    2014: $65k/year (3rd IT job, took a pay cut but better opportunity)
    2015: $67k/year (same job)
    2016: $72k/year (same job, got a raise)
    2017: $93k/year (4th IT job)
    2018: $96k/year (same job)
    2019: $108k/year (5th IT job, but same business)
    2020: $140k/year (6th IT job)
    2021: $140k/year (7th IT job, technically took a pay cut for this, but better opportunity)
    2022: $150k/year (Same job, but pay rise)
    2023: $185k/year (8th IT job)
    2024: $207k/year ( 9th IT job, but same business)
    The main things I've learnt was to focus on career growth early on. If you find a good opportunity to learn but it's not paying that well, if you can afford to take that job you should do it anyway and gain those skills that you can use to get an even bigger pay rise from someone else later. The skills I've learnt now, will allow me to work for myself. I am still trying to gain a bit more experience in the area of IT i've specialised in so I can feel confident to lose the security of full time employment, as I am the sole income in my household with a mortgage.
    Once you have a job, don't stop looking for new opportunities. As you can see during covid the market for IT workers was really hot, so I was able to jump around a lot and essentially double my pre covid income. A lot of this was just talking with recruiters fairly regularly, browsing what jobs are available. Applying for jobs that I thought I probably wasn't skilled for yet but if I did get it, it would be a big boost to my knowledge and pay. Eventually you'll land one.
    Salary creep is real, try to keep your expenses the same when you move to new jobs so you can invest more as you earn more. I still have the same things and spend around the same as I did back in 2018, inflation has meant that I spend less on frivolous things than I did back in 2018, but the overall amount that I do spend is the same. The goal here is to convert the salary into assets that can generate money so I am wealthier in the future and not reliant on salary for income.

    Hey, in case it helps someone, here is my small progression. By the way, I am from Paraguay and an Economics student, so maybe it is interesting to compare for people thinking about moving or something:
    All of the amounts are yearly amounts before taxes:
    2017: 4.8k - first job
    2018: 1.8k - part-time online
    2019: 2.2k - part-time online
    2020: 5.2k - new job back in my hometown
    2021: 6.0k
    2022: 6.2k - new job
    2023: 7.9k
    2024: 14k
    Living costs in my country are obviously lower than in the US, but there are fewer taxes and a lot of opportunities for educated people.

    2021:

    2022: Software Developer (as above) + Part Time Barista - ~$70k per year
    2023: New Software job - $83k per year
    2024: Same as above - $86,700 per year (recently quit)
    Personally, I've only recently become interested in trying to discover what it is I actually like to do instead doing what's expected. I'm far from rich, but I've made enough money to know that I've got no interest in being rich either. Hopefully I can find something that's fun and pays decently too.

    I really appreciate the transparency with it, the only things I notice is the concept of 'Access and Opportunity'. To which these things are crucial in being 'lucky' in certain situations. All this to say, moving with a boyfriend to Manhattan of all places is one of the luckiest things that could happen and one could argue that this move was a huge help for her journey.

    • @sabrayne

      I totally agree that I was super fortunate to move to Manhattan with my boyfriend-I am super grateful for this opportunity, regardless of any role it played in my salary progression. I think the true "luck" in my journey was that the person who selected my resume for the interview process at my current role went to the same university I did. I think little connections like that can play a huge role in bringing you "luck."
