Fantastic!! Most controllers for the 5200 (even new, unused ones) have oxidation in all the button contacts and have to be rebuilt. I’m surprised this one worked, right away. That’s great! Despite the control issues, when you get a 5200 in your hands, you can tell that Atari was really trying to produce the “Cadillac” of game systems.
In the interest of full disclosure, some of the keypad buttons were suffering from contact issues. Luckily, after my testing, my daughter will be able to properly represent the level of functionality of the buttons to potential buyers. Thanks for watching, Brian! 😀
I cant believe that was at a goodwill.. lol. Ive never found anything gamewise, not even decent boardgames at a goodwill in my area. I always see these vids with someone talking about how they found a treasure trove of some kind of video games or nice boardgames or somebody finds a amazing game console and ton of carts for like next to nothing, but ive never been lucky to find anything like that. I have gotten good deals ive found online or at a indoor flea market on game carts and even vintage board games which is better than nothing. Im not sure i would even want an 5200, the controllers seem pretty lame. Ya'd think after making the castiron dependable 2600 joysticks and paddles that they could continue their high standard of controller quality and make a great design for the 5200, but i dont understand how they could make it worse in function. Lol At least they couldve maintained equal predictable functionality.
I had a very similar experience. In January 2022 I walked into an old mom and pop tv repair store here in Brooklyn and came across a gorgeous refurbished 5200. While the system runs like new, I've had to go the ebay route twice with regard to the controller. Even refurbished controllers aren't the greatest. I read that if you store them in a sealed bag it helps preserve them. Of all my 14 retro systems, the 5200 is my favorite.
It's best to just rebuild them with a new flex circuit if the buttons are a problem. They were problematic back in the 80's so I'm sure they're just worse now.
I just recently got a 5200 from my sister. She was cleaning out her storage bin to move. I had Atari 8-bit computers before but this was my first 5200. I had to get the RF adapter off EBAY along with a controller. The unit works fine and I get a decent picture on my LCD TV. It came with a QIX cartridge.
Nice video as always. I picked up a 5200 a few years ago and really enjoy it. As you highlighted, the only issue I have is with some of the games that need auto-centering. Been waiting a few years for the 5200 Edladdin controller to come out.
I passed on a boxed 5200 at the flea 2 years ago. $100 but the controllers were junked. They ain’t cheap separately. This was great to watch! I played as much 5200 as I did 2600 back in the day.
The 5200 and original XBox are two systems nobody wanted until they did, so prices shot up especially since they are expensive to ship. I don't think any console dwarfs the 5200, even though there's mostly an empty cavern inside where there should be advanced computer guts. I'd hate paying $100 for a 5200. A lot of them have probelms. Their chips fail. I'm not sure what proper care is other than don't shove it in a box in the basement or attic and avoid static electricity. The controllers can be refurbed manually, though getting gold leaf contacts is best. An alternative is getting a controller adapter. Though not the authentic experience, sometimes that's exactly what you want when playing 5200 games when distinct directional presses are what you want. There's someone on AtariAge that sells adapters every once in a while. I got mine for $12 shipped but that was before PANDAmonium.
I briefly had a stepbrother in the 80s and he had one of these! First home console I played before I got a Colecovision. I was young at the time, though.
As the 5200 was never released in the UK, seeing this video really drives home the honest truth that I'll never own one, just simply because the postage for that absolute behemoth alone would cost a fortune!

Who the heck takes something that valuable for game collectors to just give it away to the goodwill? Even a novice or non-gamer should at least be knowledgeable that "hey this is probably worth something" or at least take it to a game store(if they even had one around) and get a specialists opinion before just dumping it off at a goodwill. All i ever seen at my area goodwills is damaged small kitchen appliances or beatup radios. I would freakout if i did see a 5200 all original in box. I would definitely buy it. Lol
Man. Before I left for college I had an incredible 2600 collection including a console still in box with manuals and game catalog. Sold it all when I left for school. Never again.
Pengo was one of my fave arcade games. I hardly ever saw it around, but there was a couple local arcades that always had it. I always had that game on my list if ones i wanted to get if i could get a decent emulator system. I was terrible at most arcade games, but Pengo i could play fairly decently as it didn't require super skilled player abilities to keep going thru levels. Idk i just got good satisfactory feeling sliding the blocks and smushing the enemy at just the right time. Lol
Ah... my first game system ever, was an Atari 7800 ProSystem. I remember pestering my mom one year for an NES. Got the 7800 instead. Mom's reasoning was it had Galaga on it. Many Friday and Saturday nights at 5 years old spent, just two player Galaga, Pole Position II, and others. Mom got me into games but she dropped out of it over the years.
I also missed the 7800, but have since sampled what it had to offer. Superior graphics and processing, but they cheaped out on the sound chip! Really too bad.
I always wanted one of these too, but it's a bit like a "yacht era" car from the same time, like a Chrysler Cordoba. It's big, it's got issues, my family never had the budget back then and I don't have the patience now. Thanks for sharing though, it's nice to see.
I loved the atari 5200. I even liked the controllers when they worked. And they have a game called dreadnaught factor which was an amazing game. I loved space shuttle journey into space as well.
I had to go look up Dreadnaught Factor because I didn't remember it by name. Wow! I played that on my Atari 800! Kind of a combination of 1942 & Xevious. So cool!

I remember getting the 600xl Atari computer and hooking up a cassette player and used cassette tapes to store games. Not sure if the cartridges of games were exactly the same for the Atari 52 or not. I believe the games are the same.

We're able to connect it directly to the TV with just that coaxial ? I too always wanted one... Parents said NO ... Of it was backwards compatible on launch we may have had a shot... Parents did not like the ideas of buying new cartridges of the same game again.. Also now your daughter can label it TESTED...
Yep! Straight to coax and tune to channel 3 (naturally). Tested it is. Actually, I found that not all of the keypad buttons were super-reliable, so she'll be able to properly represent its operability to potential buyers. Win-win!
I'm not used to a member of my generation being so... happy! Thrilled! Ecstatic! Anyway. I'm one of those wacky guys who prefer the 5200 to the ColecoVision. GREATLY prefer. Yes, the controllers are terrible, but let's be honest here... the CV mushroom sticks weren't much better! Plus the Atari 5200 has a color palette that puts the ColecoVision's to shame.

We got one of these and a bunch of games for Christmas. I don't know when the console was officially phased out but we got it years after the 1982 release, so I always suspected my parents got some killer deal on everything. You were definitely an older "kid" at the time. Do you recall (or can give a best estimate) when you saw the 5200 suddenly plummeting in price?
Oh, yeah. The poor 5200 had a tragically short life. This bigger, four-port model released in '82, then the revised 2-port one hit the market one year later in '83, then it was discontinued in '84! Rumor of the 7800 was in the wind, so I'd think 5200 prices started to fall by late '83.
@@GenXGrownUp Maybe my parents got it at an outlet between 85 and 88. Videogames were very expensive then, so I can't imagine them buying it at full price. I think we had 5 to 8 games: Dig Dug, Centipede, Breakout, and Moon Patrol are those I remember fondly, especially Moon Patrol. I'm glad your loaner works. These 5200 can die if left in places like attics, basements, or garages. A supplier existed for parts, but I believe the prices have gone up, so it's not as cheap to buy spares. Less than 10 years ago, you could order a board with nos chips repopulated on a board, all for $30. It didn't have a case though.

The 5200 was essentially the same chipset as the Atari 8-bit computer line (though the two can't run one another's software), allowing for way more possible fidelity in the software. Also, a much more versatile controller with 16 buttons and the re-designed stick.
I love Atari, but I really don't think that would have mattered. They launched the new console but continued to rely largely on their back-catalog of single-screen arcade titles which we had all been playing for a couple years at that point. What Atari was lacking was an original killer app. The fact that it shipped with Super Breakout is an indicator of where Atari's head was at.

People making unlicensed games or add ons? So what! Putting out more shovelware? Your point? Paying seven figures for licensing right, and releasing a prototype? Who Cares! Little did they know it WAS costing them. Just like a junkie. They think they can do any drug, any time, as much as they want, and everything will be fine. Little did they know, it won’t. And Howard Agreed with that analogy.
That's great! A few years back I came into possession of a nearly-new 1200XL that was property-badged for a local college, but looked like it had been put straight back in the box afterwards!
The only one I ever seen was my friends parents had one when I was in high school. I had the 800xl, but the 1200 was beefy. Luckily, when I sold the 800xl, I forgot to give them my cartridges, one was Bounty Bob Strikes Back. I still have it.
The 5200 with the trak-ball is amazing! Centipede, Missile Command, and Tempest (from AtariAge) are must-haves with this setup.

5200 is lots of fun when the controllers are in good working condition, like those ones seem to be. The box is indeed ginormous.
I played most of the 5200 titles on the Atari 8-bit. Those versions were, in most cases, 99% identical.

We never got the 5200 in Australia but we did get the 2600 JR and 7800.

I learned that the contacts tend to corrode. If they don't have physical damage, it may be as simple as opening them and and cleaning the contacts.

I bought a Atari 65xe, 5 years ago. It was new old stock. Paid a bit for it, but I am very nostalgic for my youth
That's great! A few years back I came into possession of a nearly-new 1200XL that was property-badged for a local college, but looked like it had been put straight back in the box afterwards!
The only one I ever seen was my friends parents had one when I was in high school. I had the 800xl, but the 1200 was beefy. Luckily, when I sold the 800xl, I forgot to give them my cartridges, one was Bounty Bob Strikes Back. I still have it.
