    This brings back some awesome memories of my Mama and me playing combat on 2600. She would only play the game with the big plane and the 3 small ones. I always had to be the big plane so she could win. I love and miss you Mama.

      Wow, Kevin. Firstly, thanks for watching, but mostly, thanks for sharing that memory. You gave me a happy laugh and I welled up just a little. It's the memories attached to and surrounding these classic games that really make them so magical for me. All my best to you, and my love to Mama as well. 🥰

      Me and my mother would play combat (planes more often than tanks), and freeway together. I did get her to play joust but I was mean and kept going after her instead of the CPU.

      These graphics look like the micro games that come in the see thru credit card size games. The Centipeded is DEFINITELY from the micro arcade game. I know this because I have that same Centipede game. I have the Blayze Centipeid 2600 replica and it has the 2600 Rom which looks like crap graphic wise. In all seriousness, I am so pleasantly surprised at this. I was gonna rip this apart for having multiple paddle titles, a proto-type 2600 Tempest that should never have been released, and a boasting of the version of Pac-Man that should never be boasted about. But wow, using versions that are closer to the arcade and not the 2600 is such a plus. Single player Combat, awesome. Vectorlike Asteroids with proper sfx, awesome. Arcade like Centipede/Millipede, awesome. A decent Tempest, awesome. And to top it off, the 2600 version of Pac-Man actually now comes off as a kitschy troll considering what they did with the other games. It's really kinda funny. I need to find this now.

    @02DooD 3 ปีที่แล้ว +12

    This has got to be the weirdest set of games I've ever seen on a mini/micro console.
    A recreation of an unfaithful port of Pac-Man
    Combat with AI because no 2 player
    Missile Command Arcade, but the one button controls all 3 bases so it shoots whichever you're nearest to
    Tempest Arcade because the 2600 prototype was never completed and is wonky
    Centipede AND Millipede decently replicated
    Single player Warlords
    I kinda want it just for how weird it is. Cool that it saves, but I really gotta wonder why they simply didn't just put the 2600 games and instead put in the effort to recreate these. Maybe simply having an emulator would be too costly and making them from scratch is cheaper for them?

    • @GenXGrownUp
      @GenXGrownUp  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I've gotta think emulation would be cheaper, but then you'd have to figure out how to manage all those switches: difficulty, color/BW/select/reset... Ports meant they could go with one button and manage it that way.

    • @qrysdonnell
      @qrysdonnell 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Usually these mini systems are an NES-on-a-chip. So emulating 2600 isn’t an option, so they just throw together an NES port of various things. The original Atari Flashback had NES recreations of 2600 and 7800 games as a result.

  • @lurkerrekrul
    @lurkerrekrul 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    I'm surprised that they programmed some simple AI for the tank in Combat, but didn't include any of the plane games from that cartridge. Since none of the plane variations have any obstacles, it would have really simple to program AI for them. Just have them turn toward the player and fire whenever the other player is anywhere in front of them.

    • @GenXGrownUp
      @GenXGrownUp  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I was thinking about that later. With the menu system, adding jet & bi-plane options could have also been added just as easily.

    • @lurkerrekrul
      @lurkerrekrul 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@GenXGrownUp I've often wondered why nobody ever made a hack of Combat to include simple AI for the planes. Maybe they don't want to add 1-player options to only some of the games and not the rest?

    • @GenXGrownUp
      @GenXGrownUp  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @GenXGrownUp Oh, just as an update - I bought one myself the other day, and it's great!
      I never played Warlords on the 2600, and that's been the top played next to Missile Command.
      The adjustable screen is so smartly crafted along with the aesthetics, overall - though, if I could add one thing, it would have been to have either a volume control or a headphone port for not disturbing anyone else with late night playing.

      @GenXGrownUp  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@jasonpaulelder So glad you're digging it! As you saw, I was also impressed. I've been getting a bit of heat for rating it so highly when it has zero actual 2600 games (even Combat and Pac-Man are similar ports), but it won me over with general fun factor.

    • @jasonpaulelder
      @jasonpaulelder 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@GenXGrownUp Yes, I can see the conflicting factor with a 2600 console playing coin-op games, but...I enjoy every game on there without feeling as if I'd rather play the home versions (I have my TV console for that).

    This is very cool and as an Atari fan (and a bit of a purist) I was expecting to see more 2600 titles on it. The games on the unit appear to be great ports of those games but I still think it should have at least had the majority of the games from the 2600. There are plenty of other options (i.e. Tiny Arcade) for the arcade ports of those games. After all, how would we feel about picking up a Tiny Arcade and seeing a 2600 port in a mini arcade cabinet? Having Combat on it will likely get me to buy one, but the other titles are distractions for me.
