Mary's point at the end about damage to your vocal chords happening more with your actual voice rather than screams at loud events really hit home with me. I'm the rhythm guitarist in a Jamaican alternative rock band called Far From Dead and I think I damaged my vocal chords at the last show we played before the pandemic in 2020. My band played early in the line-up and I did not sing during the performance (sometimes I take lead vocals). I actually think that I damaged my voice after I was off the stage when I was trying to talk to people over the sound of the other bands playing and when I also sang along with the other bands playing while in the audience. I haven't had my cords looked at (I assume it's pretty expensive) but ever since then, I've had issues where my voice will just cut out when I'm trying to hit certain notes or if I'm singing carelessly (in a non performance setting). It's actually been a bummer as singing means so much to me. I would love to learn to scream at some point, so hopefully when I can afford to, I can take some Skype lessons with Mary 🤘🏽
The reason you may go horse from false cord screaming is because of the larger amount of air flow. your vocal folds may not be used, but there is air blowing by them which will dry them out. This can be really tricky if you pair false cord with clean singing or voice with distortion, because you will be singing with a dry voice which will cause you to push harder. With fry screams your vocal cords stay together, and fry screaming generally has more support and compression meaning less air flow in general making it safer to do with other singing. I personally found that clean singing/ mixed voice/ belting wears out my voice faster than any type of scream technique.
I would say that the fatigue from holding the fry compression poses a similar risk to anyone switching back and forth. Dry or fatigued cords will be at risk for misphonations - to me the fatigue from holding fry compression is equally risky. I have seen folks have much more difficulty with that issue than the other way around.
@@voicehacks What about with your own experience? because your older songs you used to go from false cord to clean singing, and now you do frys to clean singing more right? Do you not notice a difference in fatigue anymore?
This is a great question! Yes I prefer to fry personally these days, but only because of the sound. If I could get the same tones out of false cord I would rather false cord. It is a very difficult task for me personally to manage the tension and fatigue of frying for long periods and those muscle issues do directly affect my singing ability. It’s a lot of maintenance and repetitive targeted muscle stretching to combat that. I do find it quite challenging though I make it appear easy
Trying to learn to scream because I want to surprise my boyfriend at our wedding and he has no clue...but I'm close I just didn't know if you could help me be better...and I'm trying to learn blessed be.
how safe is using the fry register (vocalist in Demilish) or throat singing (Shagraths during live shows) for distortion? since i no longer have false vocal folds (genetic condition) i can no longer use my natural 'stomach voice'. i asked my doctor and gave a demonstration.h e had no idea those sounds i made were possible or even heard of 'throat singing". he said what i was doing was unhealthy but how can he know if he never saw it before? is it safe or is my dr. correct?
Can you maybe take a look at the voice of Dave Peters from "Throwdown"? What kind of technique is he using? Like in "Venom and Tears". So that I could work towards learning this. That would be great! I like your "react" Videos.
It's been a year I'm watching a lot of your vids and I learned a lot from you But I just can't do the scream But suddenly I tried without the mood To scream And I accidentally Made It I'm still in progress but myhigh scream Are inhales and my lows is exhale It didn't hurt at all so Thank you🤟
Before I watch I just want to guess what the end result of the video is based on the title. Yes, but no if you know how to do it safely. Edit: Well yeah. I'd imagine at this point people would start to understand that there is a safe way of doing something that many people have done for years without any major injuries. If you think about it, running is more dangerous than false cord or fry screaming because more people get hurt while running than while screaming, but we still like to run without any worries.
📝I am odd … got it 😅 I have been distorting my voice since I can remember, I guess lol …I didn’t know that 😅! I was just trying to keep up with my ma, lol we yelled a lot growing up 🙃… I have never lost my voice from yelling. But I’ve never actually tried to sing metal either idk 🤷🏼♀️😁 I’m to shy anyways😋🤘
Nope. Air still leaves through your mouth, albeit in a more controlled manner due to the compression of exiting air (from whichever screaming technique you use). The screams you hear from your fav vocalists are the end product; beginning sounds don't often start off sounding great! But ofc, be safe by being aware of what you're doing, and how your body feels/reacts.

may I ask what the background music is?
It’s a song I bought randomly from a website I have the license but don’t know who the original writer is!
i asked my doctor if 1 hour per week of singing with no right technique can cause problems and she said yes. is that true?

Sorry ,when you screaming ,air coming through your nose or not? Please answer ,I trying already 5 years ,but i can't.... :(
I'm pretty sure air shouldn't be coming out of your nose. That's how it is for me atleast.
