My experience matches to yours. I have Project X LZ 6.0 soft stepped and a set that's standard. I find that the soft step feels just slightly more flexible. Feels like I moosh the ball more. When working with a fitter on this setup I tried 5.5 hard stepped and found that they felt too rigid; more vibration and clicky. Ball flight was pretty much the same but I liked the additional momentum from the heavier 6.0 shafts.
Awesome video! Great education! I see these options quite a bit and shrug my shoulders. Thanks for the info and detail. Detail in an easy to understand way.
I don't definitively know if it's placebo effect or real, but I have a set of soft stepped X-100s by one club and they feel better than anything I've ever used and the results are fantastic too.
The old adage was "play the softest shaft you can control or the stiffest shaft you can hit". Which may end up being the same shaft. The difference also needs time to show itself.
This video came just in time. About to build a cobra one length set. Was gonna soft step the 4i and 5i for launch. But all the head weights are the same and i prefer these shafts in regular set up. Im just gonna slap the same head in each shaft.
another great vid - i soft stepped my irons twice and didn't notice any difference - just wondering why do most players that order x100 tend to add 1/4 inch in lenght ? thanks
Clear and interesting video. Thank you. Do graphite shafts sets (9 shafts x .355) come at one length, or are they as yours were, different lengths for each club through the set.
Different subject: if I put a strip of electrical tape down the “front” of the shaft, would it make the shaft a bit stiffer? Have a regular shaft and I’m try a low tech way of experimenting.
Thanks for the informative video. Just a question tho, i noticed my iron graphite shafts are longer than steel. If i cut them to steel standard say 37" for 7iron. What do i need to do to keep the weight same. Thanks!
Assuming you are talking about swing weight here, you would need to add some mass to the heads, around 6g per 1/2 inch of cutting. You could also switch to lighter grips though that might not be enough depending on where your current grip weight is. Would need to drop 12-15g in grip weight to accomplish the same result.
Another cool experiment! Did you get the CPMs on each? I would be interested if the double soft step plays more like a heavier regular flex DG. I would be interested in taking it to the extremes to see if that dispersion grows even more. Maybe double soft step a DG 105 regular and double hard step a DG 105 Xstiff
Hi AJ, I've been following your channel for several years and have picked up many useful tips however I'm not sure about a shaft change to my PXG gen6 irons I'm considering as follows. I have a set of.370 steelfiber shafts which I sanded down to fit the .355 hostel on my previous irons, would you recommend using PXG collared ferrules with the plastic 'spacer' or would collared ferrules with shims be ok. Kind regards Tony Bishop
I never use the PXG parts. Simple, appropriately fit brass shim and any ferrule you want (collared or not). The PXG ferrules will start creeping much sooner than a traditional ferrule.
Have you any experience with shaft weight and low point control? I've recently moved into a lighter iron shaft and am struggling with low point. Thanks
I have fit certain golfers with AoA issues into specific weight shafts. Had one 70 year old good golfer who came in with very light shafts and a 3 degree upward AoA. We put a heavier shaft into the equation and got his attack angle down close to 0.
So I know I said in the video you don't tip trip the taper shafts but you actually can tip them 3/8, so you can tip the pw shaft that amount and end up with hard stepped.
@EFGMC great test and information but how do we as recreational golfers test this? If we don't know how to work with installing and cutting shafts , this is not accessible to us. Most golf shops salesman will look at the average golfers swing and just say, you don't need this. I found that they barely entertain the thought of customizing unless you swing amazing. This is kind of a problem because the right club can make a massive difference even for people learning
Any ideas if the kbs tour parallel shaft is the same flex as the taper tip? I’ve heard the DG is different slightly in flex between the taper and parallel even trimmed to the same spec, so I’d be curious if this applied to other brands.

Stands to reason. In my experience with Project X LZ’s, the 5.5 plays very stiff to flex, where as the 6.0 is only slightly stiffer..

Really informative video, I enjoyed, thank you. 👏🏻
Thanks again for some great content. From my experience and your data shows the stiffer shaft created shots that were occasionally short and right.

My experience is you would have to hard step or short step 3x to equal one whole flex level. Does this align with your experience?

.355 should all be individual lengths
Another great, and interesting video.
Very interesting. What happens if you tip trim .355 iron shafts at 1/4 and 1/2. Thanks
Interesting! Didn't you touch on this when you did the whole 8 iron shaft in a wedge thing??

I need to pull my frequency meter out of storage as I rarely ever use it except on the occasional video.
Im gonna put a 45" graphite driver shaft in my lob wedge now. And yes, i have issues. 😂

Great content mate. What shaft would you take then for the PW when hard stepping?

Assuming we are talking about constant weight discrete length shafts, they should be the same.
Adam…..tried emailing you early last week about swing weighting and fitting.
Still waiting for a reply??????
Was out of town last week. Some emails slipped through the cracks looks like.
