Zara's Pet Portraits & Wildlife Art
United Kingdom
เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 20 ม.ค. 2018
My name is Zara Toms, based in Hampshire in the UK. I specialise in detailed pet portraits and wildlife art in pastels and acrylics. My TH-cam channel is packed full of painting & drawing tips and techniques. If you're beginning your art journey, a hobbyist or an advanced artist I'm always happy to answer any art related questions. If you'd like to grow and develop your art further I offer in depth, considerably slower, often real time tutorial in pastels and acrylics on my Patreon. My Patreon has a large range of domestic pets for members who are looking to expand into pet portraits themselves. With a range of breeds demonstrating the tips and techniques I use to transfer into their own portraits. There is also a wide range of wildlife subjects so there is something for everyone :).
I upload videos to TH-cam every Tuesday & Saturday.

How to make your pastel drawings even more realistic | Chocolate Labrador drawing
Drawing realistic, highly detailed fur relies on the right technique and it all starts at the base foundation. This is a key process to maximise the depth that is captured in our pastel drawings. There are three main stages that I use which all incorporate any layers within each stage to push the level of realism we can capture when using pastel pencils.

Painting a Gorilla in acrylics | How to achieve more realism?

Painting in greyscale can massively improve our painting skills. In this tutorial, I'll show how to achieve a high level of realism when working on smaller drawings. These tips can be applied when working in any medium. When drawing this Fox, being that it was approximately 4" x 4", it was really important to ensure as much depth was captured without drawing hundreds of individual details. To do this, contrast, the layering process & pencil technique are vit...

Women who paint do not apply brush strokes like men, they paint hair by hair..😊😊😊

Hi zara I struggle with original drawing outlines do you have any to download or tips please
I was thinking the same like a little hoover
I have a tendency to overdo details how do i stop doing that lol
@@inedinevanderwesthuizen3822 do you mean over do details to soon and jump into them to early or over do details in general and not know when to stop? 😊
@zaratomsart not always sure where to stop the in looks like a ball of hard hair 😂
@inedinevanderwesthuizen3822 when you feel you are at the point where you have that you enough detail I would either put the drawing away and then look at it with fresh eyes. That break will stop you from over working the drawing. The other option is when you feel you have enough detail, take a photo of it on your phone. Looking at art on a smaller size screen can really help is decide if something needs any more work. If you feel like it doesn't then stop adding details. It's a quick and easy way to determine it but is also great for trying to notice anything that we may need to adjust proportions/perspective/flat & enhance depth wise.
@zaratomsart thank u so much one more question should my base layer be as dark as the shadowed area's in that specific area I'm on
@inedinevanderwesthuizen3822 it really depends on the reference photo and what that section of fur looks like. Really tricky to say without seeing the reference photo
wow, your a machine, im 68 how many years i need to master this? LOL
@Ed-lz4jv I had only been using pastels for a year before I did this one. Pastels is such a fun and forgiving medium if the right supplies are used. Practice & patience, like with anything were learning is what matters. I draw every day and when I was learning I'd draw at least for 2 hours a day and the more you experiment with a medium, the more you learn from mistakes, improve on skills etc. I've taught members in their 80's ❤️
This is really a beautiful one, indeed ! I have one quick question - what is it that you are using to clean the pastel dust ?
Thank you =). It's a air puffer tool and my shark house hoover with a car cleaning attachment.
Beautifull portrait! ❤ Is this portrait also on patreon?
@Mauddegroot03 thank you =). No not this one as I already have a Chocolate Labrador pastel tutorial on Patreon.
Hi Zara how many base layers do you normally use.Thank you for your time
@sandyphillips2467 it varies depending on the subject but if I'm working just with the pencils as I am here then I usually do 3 because even if I just adjust the lights or darts just slightly that's still part of the base foundation. If I don't have enough softness at the base, I'll add another layer to make sure it's more blended.
Great video, always learn so much from you. What are those tools that you use for getting rid of the dust particles called and where do you get them from? Thanks!
@@miriambell2260 thank you so much ❤️. That's just a little air puffer tool and my shark hoover with a car cleaning attachment on the end =). Just saves the dust being blown into the air.
Canson paper is to expensive I can't afford mam I checked in Amazon app.Anyway I Thank You for the effort you took to post the tutorial video narrating and drawing.wish you all the best have a great day ahead and GOD BLESS YOU AND YOUR FAMILY.
I just ordered Canson velvet to try. I love Pastelmat but I don’t appreciate paying $78 for a pad that has flaws. I have had pads that every page has scratch marks which can ruin a drawing if I don’t notice right off. The Canson velvet is less expensive and I’m excited to give it a go.
I've been really fortunate that I haven't had any issues with the Pastelmat but do appreciate there has been many issues. Hopefully, according to Clairefontaine who make Pastelmat, they have said that has been resolved but at what point the defective paper is out of shops there will still be issues until all that is gone if they have fixed the issues of course. I loved the different colours the Canson paper comes in. I loved drawing on the black velvet paper. But the Canson does have it's issues regarding layering so it's important to also bear that in mind when working with this paper. Experiment and see how you find it as paper is going to be very subjective to each artist and the techniques they are using. But I certainly can't wait to try the Velvet black paper again after the first test I did on it in December :D
Lovely
Hi I really appreciate this tutorial, thank you. I have made a rookie mistake by going in and painting what I think I see. I don't have any formal training so wonder if I can go back and paint my background colour (black) and start again? Sorry if this sounds like a silly question, but I really don't have much of a clue about building up layers the way you have done here.
I just love your work!!!❤❤❤
Beautiful. I've spent my whole life raising sheep. You did an amazing job capturing the wool and making her come alive.

@Lizziebird-pg4gj so pleased it was helpful ❤️❤️
An excellent video, with so much helpful advice. As you work on a raised board how do you deal with excess pastel dust, particularly when using black and white pastels?
@veraberyl so pleased it was helpful ☺️. I use my Shark hoover with a small car cleaning attachment on the end which is perfect for pastel dust. I just use that to keep my work space really clean. Works well =)
Beautifully done, appreciate your teachings ❤

I love ladybugs. Never tried to draw one though. Guess it's time I give it a try. Also, do you work in watercolor?
@@Yolanda_draws I don't work in watercolour. It's one medium I've never used.
Problem with the speed of work and your speech.
You are expected to show the brush movements at original speed so that the beginners can easily learn . Also you please speak slowly. Your demonstrations are good for those who have semi-mastered the technichs
The real time tutorial is on Patreon where I explain every brush stroke, no footage is sped up.
