    I use standard high qulity garden lights, where the spike pull off fits into the winch handle holes on the winches. They give a good light for using the cockpit, and for light getting ina nd out of the boat at dock. As well as additional light at anchor or moring.

  • @SailHosailing
    @SailHosailing 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    That's a really good point about the anchor light. Nobody comes into an anchorage at night, especially one they don't know, staring at the sky. We use a bomb-proof hurricane lamp and we follow Tom Cunliffe's advice about hauling it up on the spare halyard then fixing it to the deck with a downhaul so that's about half the height of the mast.

    I would totally agree on Readly, I have 5 years of PBO, YM & Sailing on my iPad! Plus you get access to not only UK magazines, so helpful when you are in other countries. My iPad is of course now mostly full of magazines, but you can choose less to download 😄 Enjoy the heat, it is chilly back home 🌦

    Hi I like the burghoff range of knives because they come with a decent blade sheath that protects them in the draw when sailing. They are available at Sainsbury’s stores in the Uk Let me know if you are interested.

    • @svfairisle
      @svfairisle  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      We have our knives on a magnetic bar on the galley wall which works well for us. People always comment that they might fall off but there’s no chance of that

      Yes the link is still in the description to this video, it’s the Aleader one. Not sure if our discount code still works but give it a go. We still have our shoes, doing well after 2 years use so, let me know if the discount code still works as we will order some more ourselves at some point.

    Fellow gadget man… OLAS and Exposure torch already have! Some other items for you: the entire Makita 18v tool set! We have the drill, multi tool, vacuum cleaner, grinder, torch and fan on board, all with the same battery set. FLIR Scout Monocular. Scanstrut Rokk phone chargers. And most importantly, the Wago electric wire connectors (these are brilliant, especially if you get the gel box for better insulation). And finally soft shackles…. love our soft shackles - we use with the bridle on our cat for the anchor chain, lose the metal!

    • @svfairisle
      @svfairisle  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes I've seen the Makita range all running off the same type of battery, fantastic idea, will certainly change over to that when some of my tools die. The Wago sounds intriguing too, going to look it up right now!

    Sure like the shoes and use them if I can find them here in the US. I have difficulty finding shoes here as I wear a 11.5 2 wide, 46 wide European. I have type 2 diabetes without any issues but feet are tender. As the wrist alarm is great but sailing solo it would help me so I wear a vest most of time with trailing floating lines about100 feet behind also in rougher weather I am clipped into jacklines. My sailing days may ending soon as 2 weeks past I was diagnosed with cancer and refuse chemotherapy as it kills the immune system w me for covid-19. Take care.

      its called Mr. Funnel. I actually showed it in a previous video th-cam.com/video/7jxfLnvDHsA/w-d-xo.html it's great at removing dirt and water but it does have the annoying trait of leaving a little bit of diesel in the bottom of the funnel

    Thanks for another interesting video. Do you find that the iPad is bright enough to read outside? Mine doesn't seem bright enough in UK sunshine. Maybe mine isn't as bright as it should be.

    • @svfairisle

    • @Steve21945
      @Steve21945 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Mrkk1103 it could depend on which model/year iPad you have, because I think the later ones get brighter. Also it might matter how old it is, because I'm sure that my 4 year old iPad Pro isn't as bright as it was when I got it. Or maybe it's just that my eyes are 4 years older haha

    Thanks, always love a good gadget myself..! Regarding headlamps, big fan and like your choice, and I'd also put a vote in for something like the Petzl units that support their Core rechargeable Li-On pack; it's the same fit, form, function as three standard AAA batteries, so you can swap between them, and/or keep some high-quality Alkalines in your grab bag in case of emergencies. Not fully waterproof, but they do take a beating. Like the shoes, will look into getting them, and the OLAS kit looks the business also. And the solar lights are a great addition; I also place an extra fixed white light at the bow and stern regardless - with the mooring light 20m+ aloft a lot of local traffic will never see it. I've used rechargeable LEDs that also can act as a battery pack for cellphones (5200mAh), but I like your solar charging and PIR sensing. Hello Amazon...

    • @svfairisle
      @svfairisle  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes im glad I found the little solar lights, they were £20 for 4! Two are still in the packet, I’ve been using the other two all season and I can just leave them out and forget them. They get enough charge during the day to run all night and switch on automatically when it gets dark.

  • @chhindz

    A light with a flashing mode seems only to be an annoyance, that takes an extra step to get away from. I suppose it may use less electricity than a constant light while attracting the same attention, I would prefer to have a light with out it

    • @svfairisle
      @svfairisle  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I agree that putting too many modes into things can become an annoyance if it's something you dont often use, I get that all the time with camera menus that get clogged up with functions that I would never use and hide the ones I want,or at least just become an annoyance to get past. The beauty of the way this light works is you press once for low red, then progressively brighter. OR you go for a log press for white, then progressively brighter. You can turn off at any stage with a long press. The flashing mode requires a very long press, so it never gets in the way of other modes, you dont have to cycle through it to get somewhere else, so basically if you never gave a very long press you wouldn't know it was there. Someone has put a lot of good logical thought into this lamp. I would suggest that someone knows about sailing. And i do think a flashing light is good in an emergency.

    • @briangilliland3620
      @briangilliland3620 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      My torch submersible has a flashing mode - morse SOS - specifically for emergencies.

      @@svfairisle I note that you refer to red light "so you don't dazzle people" but it's "big" in that it doesn't significantly reduce wearers night vision. - I must get one like yours for it's rechargeable features though - thanks Steve.

    A great gadget video!
    I’m going to get the motion lights as they work as a security guard too.
    A quick question on the shoes, I think you showed us a type you wear while on the boat with dark/black soles. Do they leaves marks on the cabin top etc?
    All the best Richard.

    • @svfairisle
      @svfairisle  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No they are the ones I have as deck shoes, they don’t leave marks. The thing with these shoes though is they pick up stones so it’s strictly a pair for shore and a pair for deck
