  • We have made a few of these videos before showing things that we find really useful on a boat and we like doing them because we often get comments with tips for other great items too (thanks Nick Merritt for the Wago tip).
    This video was sponsored by Surfshark you can check out the special deal here: surfshark.deals/sailingfairisle
    The range of headphones from AfterShokz can be found on their website here: bit.ly/3FFHAwz or Amazon: amzn.to/3oA1ZfB
    Use the code : Sailing5off for an extra £5 off anytime in the next month.
    Comfort seat are based in Holland, we were introduced to them by friends in Cartagena who loved them but had ordered too many so we bought two of them. We then received the larger chair which is a 'classic large plus' while we were in Venice. You can see their range here: www.comfortseat.nl/shop/?lang=en
    The fire alarm we have is called the Fire angel Atom, but it seems to be out of stock on the UK Amazon site. However there is a version on there which looks the same and has a 10 year life : www.amazon.co.uk/HEIMAN-Detec...
    Wago connectors are available everywhere, just Google them. The ones I'm using are the 221 which are the newer version to the 222. the older version was larger and grey; these newer ones are better. Don't be confused by the power rating on the side, there are two lots of figures. The one on the side with the 11mm cable measure is just for Japan.

    Aeropex are the best ear phones I have ever had. They are good to use for phone calls- the Mic is good enough to use it for work. If you are listening to music and double tap the button it skips to the next song. They are expensive- but my goodness they are worth every penny. We bought the chairs you recommended last year for Christmas. They are wonderful! Very good recommendations!!

    I use wago for domestic work, they are great but would have two concerns on a boat: 1 corrosion in a salt atmosphere (dissimilar metals) and 2 no strain relief on the insulation.

    • @svfairisle
      @svfairisle  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You're right that if a connection needs strain relief then there are better options like the crimped connectors I showed along with cable ties etc. Wago's are for the situations I described where in the past you might use a chocolate block. Regarding dissimilar metals corrosion, again in high risk areas use the crimped connectors with sealed heatshrink, this type of corrosion requires dissimilar metals AND an electrolyte so it's keeping the moisture out thats key. For other areas open connectors are fine, if you've seen and of my tech videos that include wiring you will see I ALWAYS use dielectric grease on connections as in a salt water environment it';s always possible to get moisture in a joint, even something in the position I was showing behind the switch panel. If you think about it all those bus bar connections on the switch panel are an open connection too, no one seals them. So in dry areas a full waterproof joint is probably overkill, just use your Tefgel and try not to have a leaky boat!

    Since I found out about Wagos a few years ago, I’ve gone though several boxes and have made everyone I know that has an electrical project get one. They are very handy for temporarily debugging too. Only failure I’ve had was snapping off the lever in about 15F temps.

    WAGO type connectors are brilliant, but haven't thought of them as a present! The soldered heat shrink sealed inline connectors are a pain to get hold of but are the best for exposed or vulnerable connections... Great video!

    • @svfairisle
      @svfairisle  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I’m not so sure of the soldered in line connectors. Any soldered connection leaves a weak spot at the joint of the solder and wire as it effectively makes the soldered section a single strand wire. So for the same reason we wouldn’t use single cored wire on a boat you might introduce a break point trough fatigue. It’s true that the heat shrink might supply some support but I still think a crimped version is preferable.

    • @bobrose7900
      @bobrose7900 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@svfairisle Agreed, I do tin the wires first and in all instances make sure the joints are will supported, uv resistant cable ties do a good job. I've had crimped connections fail or generate hi resistance, most likely due to oxidation which is a real issue on boats, so am probably a bit biased, but, as always, a bit of care and attention to detail pays off regardless.

    • @svfairisle
      @svfairisle  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I've had the Aftershokz headphones for a few years now as myself and a group of my friends are cyclists and none of us like the loss of spatial awareness that conventional headphones cause. Another friend who I demonstrated them to had a bit of a revelation with them as he is deaf in one ear due to nerve damage during an operation to remove a brain tumour. He tried the AfterShokz and heard music in stereo for the first time in nearly a decade!
    The only downside is the proprietary charging port/cable which is £10 for a replacement - not bank breaking but not cheap either. The upside of it is that its magnetic so I keep them on the metal leg of my desk so I can easily find them!

    • @svfairisle
      @svfairisle  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, they actually have 2. One on the opposite face to where the wires go in and one under the latches. Someone on the comments here actually had the brilliant idea that if you use a connector with one more port than you need you can stick the probe for the meter in there and lock it down so you don't have to hold it while your using the other probe, could be really useful when you've got your hands full and need to test lots of places.

    • @svfairisle
      @svfairisle  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Turkey like Greece has always been a good value destination compared to much of the Western Med. It’s particularly good at the moment though as the exchange rate is very favourable. Not sure what’s happening with the economy here but we’ve gone from getting 13 lira to the £ to getting 16 lira/£ since we’ve been here ( a couple of weeks!) 5 years ago you would have got 6 lira/£, so it’s 3x cheaper here than it was 5 years ago! • @svfairisle
      @svfairisle  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No they work equally well on stranded wire, even fine strand. Tining wire is to be avoided as it's easily over done and effectively makes the wire a single strand so you would have the same problem as if you had used singly strand wire on a boat i.e. a weak point at the connector.

    • @svfairisle
      @svfairisle  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Actually no. Soldering cables on a boat is a very bad idea. Same reason as why we don’t use single core cable on a boat. By soldering you are effectively making the multicored cable single core at the point of connection with a weak point which will eventually break unless you have perfect tied in cables.

    • @colinchambers3433
      @colinchambers3433 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I disagree-. Un-tinned copper cables will form within a nautical environment over time an insulated black oxidising coating between its crimp connectors continuing the whole length of the cable or cables, it’s usually noted first by the negative cable, but will oxidise overtime influence both cables. Oxidisation of joints equals resistance equals heat equals failure.. Jacktar

      Hi John, no these are bluetooth headphones to play sound from a phone or anything else you want to hear a sound feed from via bluetooth. The idea is to keep your ears clear to hear any ambient sounds so sort of the opposite to noise cancelling headphones! So obviously you wouldn't use them in a very noisy environment because you wouldnt hear your music / podcast very well, but for sailing the background noise is usually fine to wear these and hear the sound really well but still hear if someone shouts for help or if a sail starts flapping etc. I would be very interested to know how the work alongside a hearing aid, I would imagine you can use them as normal with your hearing aid in so you can still hear outside sounds? they provide a pair of ear plugs in the box if you want to hear just the headphone sound, but that's rather defeating the point of them I think. How do conventional headphones work with you hearing aid? presumably you would need over the ear headphones or just very load ear buds? Maybe this bone induction method would work better, would be worth an internet search.

Due to the lack of eardrum involvement, this technology is good for people with hearing deficiencies, as the bone conduction vibration acts in lieu of the eardrum.'
