Toppers talk things according to their experience. It worked for them so it definitely can work for a lot of people. You should be wise enough to choose things which suit you. You are not a kid. Also I am sure by the way you have framed it that you listened to this from some popular coaching teacher. Do you realize the amount of conflict of interest they have. They earn crores by "teaching" people. They would definitely want everyone to read "comprehensively" and not listen to toppers. In the end diversity of opinion matters. We should listen and work according to our strengths. And I'll anyday trust toppers more than coaching "faculty"
Trusting toppers more than teachers is understandable. But how many single digit or double digit toppers have you heard saying “ncert chill maaro, newspaper chill maaro” ?? These 4 people not even once said that if basics are not clear then ncert is MUST! Because you cannot expect a science or commerce background Candidate to pick up laxmikant rightaway if he/she doesn’t know difference between Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha. How can a person from non-arts background be at same level with a person who has studied humanities in 11-12th, unless their basics are clear. And 10th class social science is not sufficient to build base . Also, for the past 3 years some questions from history geography and polity are coming copy paste from ncert. These people nowhere talked about conceptual clarity and if at all basics are clear only then skip ncert. They are only misguiding candidates. Listen to toppers who are genuinely “TOPPERS” Someone getting a 3 digit rank is just a ranker and not a topper.

Newspapers help you in getting better at articulating things and forming opinions. I believe it helped me in writing my mains answers for sure, but yeah I did things very differently and can be sure regarding my way of doing things only after I see the results
I am also a UPSC aspirant, i am yet to graduate hence i don't know how correct these guys are but i have been studying NCERT for 2 months continuously and i have come to realise one thing, it is not just about selection it is more about getting rid of your old self. Getting rid of you narrow mindset and prejudices about society and other people. New NCERT takes you through the practicality of society that people usually deny. I don't know weather NCERT is going to help me get selected or not but i am going to complete NCERTs. I don't want to be a rote aspirant who just wants to get the government job. UPSC is about people who want to change things. Weather i get selected or not, i don't want UPSC exam to be my motivation but the change i can bring with the help UPSC. It might sound funny how I put it but let me tell you this if you don't believe that society and it's people can actually change and work together to move forward then you don't have the right to criticize the society either. And in that case you don't need to become and UPSC aspirant either because UPSC is about helping this country and its people.

I'm can't agree to what they are saying.After 12th itself I started reading for upsc and started with standard books thinking that it will cover ncerts but then after few months I came back to ncert and stopped reading standard books.Both of them have different role to play

Well precisely the reason they didn't feature in top 100. 2023 Prelims examination legit had most of its geography questions from NCERT. UPSC has reciprocated sentences from NCERT in form of questions. Definitely it's not the only source that would guarantee ones preparation, but these people need to stop dejecting it. They can definitely go around and say I didn't read them because of whatever the reason be, however they shouldn't be like arey mat padho bekaar hai and all. Most of toppers, swear by these two sources. AIR 3 2021 in her preparation strategy stressed how she would spend fixed hours over making notes from newspaper.
I think if u want to learn how to prepare for upsc learn from these people not from top10 toppers you will ruin your entire prepration by following those toppers...

Ncert is very important for geography and also pyqs from 1979 onwards at least 20-25 questions come from pyq.
