Very glad I’ve discovered your channel, as I’m about to try installing a £300 cartridge, easily the most expensive one I’ve ever owned, and I really don’t want to mess it up!
excellent set up video. As a man of precision I insist on perfection. This set up is critical for pricey stylus, lp long life, and the best cleanest sound possible. Can't thank you enough.
I'm going to be mounting a VM540 on a fixed tonearm of my pro-ject evo in three days. Can't believe they don't have threaded inserts in these cartridges. Wish me luck :D
It went somewhat well. The flimsy, non-replaceable wires in the EVO tonearm almost caused me to have a heart attack. It's important not to pull on anything; instead, push the clamp off with something thin like a knife's edge.
It must be super slow out your way. It has dried up here. Just selling on ebay these days. Nice to see another vid. It is a nice turntable. I always install the headsehell wires before the screws. It helps keep it together as my hands/ fingers are extra large and easier to manipulate / pop the terminals on to the posts. I have a couple original Technics alignment gages that you pop the assembly in and align the stylus with the grove. That VTA adjustment is slick. Look forward to the next video.
Yeah, at first I put the screws on the head shell before the wire being connect and it was harder to connect the wires. So yeah, connect the wires first and then screw on the cartridge to the head shell bc it’s easier to get the wires on when it’s still not connected and the wires free. Also it came with this tube to cover the connections and I put them over the front 4 post on the cartridge, but I think it was suppose to go on the tone arm 4 posts I don’t think it makes that much of a difference, but I switch it out and I have the screw off head shell which makes it much easier than the stationed tone arm tip.
I have one of those in my box of tricks. You put the headshell in and pin slides in the groove. The other end gives the vertical alignment by showing where stylus shoulɓnd align in the groove in its other end.
Thanks for showing the set up. I have downloaded and printed the Rega Stevenson protractor many times, but have been unable to get the measurements 140mm and 200mm correct. If you were able to, how did you set the software to print it correctly?
This easily the best guide on how to install a cartridge on YT. Very detailed and straightforward👌🏻 I've only had experience using a mirrored protractor purchased from turntable lab, but was not aware of the other methods you covered. I do have a question for you: I recently purchased my first technics DD turntable(SL-D2) in great condition for $100. My previous TT was an Akai BT500 that was belt drive. The SL-D2 came with a pickering xv-15(w/ D750 styli?) that sounds pretty damn good, tbh). My other cartridge that was on my akai is a Nagaoka Mp-200. I was about to install it on the technics headshell but noticed the colored wires are in different order than the MP-200. The technics headshell has the Red on the top right & White on top left(headshell facing forward). The nagaoka has Red on the top left and White on the top right. The blue & green are swapped as well. Am I supposed to follow the headshell or the cartridge as the guide, or do I cross the wires and install as shown on either side? This is the first time I've encountered this, so any information would be greatly appreciated!🙏🏻
great vid...could you possibly do a vid on cartridge/stylus replacement on a non-removable headshell please..i have a shure and am not to confident..many thanks.
Complete and total newbie here, thank you for your very informative video! May I ask, if I purchase a pre-mounted cartridge, would I simply attach it and follow your instructions starting with tracking force adjustment?
Hi, great video thanks a lot for that. Would you happen to know what the tip of the needle to the gasket measurement in mm for a Denon DP 30 L headshell/turntable? Is it the same 52mm as technics ?
I installed the 740ML just yesterday on my 1500C.. what a amazing cartridge

This is one of the most helpful videos I've come across in a long time. Really great. Thank you.
Wish this had been available when I was fumbling around setting up the same cartridge!

Thank you for this video. I’m trying to change mine for the first time and this video helps a lot!
Oh talk about great timing! I just got the AT740ML and this video will be super helpful when I set it up - thanks!
Awesome, thank you! some very useful information in this video.

Excellent refresh course , thanks
I'm waiting my new Ortofon 2m red cartridge. It's good to see how Install it. Thanks! Greetings fromm Argentina

This is the correct pinout of all removable headshells: audiokarma.org/forums/index.php?threads/at440mlb-and-headshell-wiring.724663/
Best of a lot of videos I have watched thank you but, how would you correct inaccurate azimuth, your saying just tighten one screw a little more?
Really depends on your tonearm. If it's a removable headshell, loosening the collar allows you to tilt it a little bit left and right.

Watch my video on the Rega P8. I do one there.
Why you didn’t show how to perfectly make the cartridge straight on the shell? That should be on this video. Thanks anyway for all the information
how does the 540 compare to the Ortofon blue or red? Is the 540 mountable on any tonearm? I have a Pro-Ject Xpression II
AT has better stylus than both Ortofons. Equal to the Bronze.
Sir, what protractor do I used for Audio technica atlp120xusb turntable ?
Great video, I'm still confused as how to achieve "perfectly square".
Complete and total newbie here, thank you for your very informative video! May I ask, if I purchase a pre-mounted cartridge, would I simply attach it and follow your instructions starting with tracking force adjustment?
Yes, but you will need to align the cartridge in the headshell for your model of turntable.
What protractor do I need for a kenwood pc-350?
Hi, great video thanks a lot for that. Would you happen to know what the tip of the needle to the gasket measurement in mm for a Denon DP 30 L headshell/turntable? Is it the same 52mm as technics ?

@@TurntableGuy Thank you very much 👍
Bravo
When you lay the acrylic gage for azimut take care to never put it on the thicker outer vynil! salut
When using the mirror to adjust the azimuth you must remove the record, otherwise you get double height and thus a wrong setting.
Great video but wow, I can’t believe this is so complicated. Put me right off doing it!
