  • Arc'teryx has continued to enter the consciousness of fashion buyers until now it seems more popular than ever. From celebrity endorsements to a collab with Palace, we're taking a look at how the brand has done this; more importantly, is it worth buying?

    I'm not the biggest fan of just slapping your logo on a garment and calling the design a day, but man, Arc'teryx's is so damn cool. It works perfectly as a logo as it is recognisable, descriptive and fitting, but it also works as a simple graphic that would still look good without any brand connection.

    • @skankytrick
      @skankytrick 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      My Piedmont vest only has the logo printed very small on the back on the very bottom. I didn't even know it was there at all until I saw someone mention it online as a detail that they most liked about the vest. In fact, this completely clean look is what drew me to the vest in the first place, and then when I read the reviews, at least 75% of them mentioned they were delighted by the lack of branding. As an honorable mention, I have a Rag & Bone wool jacket that also has no external branding. It is a $600 jacket but is so nice that it doesn't need to lean on its branding in order to stand out. I think that is the pinnacle of quality: such outstanding quality and clean presentation that a product does not need to prominently display a logo in order to leverage its brand recognition.

The quality is changing however ! I bought mine 6 or 7 years ago and more recently got one for my partner at the time. The zippers and small details have had a cut in terms of cost of materials ..

    This is already one of my favourite Antwon videos. I got into Arc’ after watching the Atom LT vid and picked one up myself, then a couple of Skyline shirts (the old, nice ones) and a Zeta SL shell jacket. Wore the shell today on a damp and muddy 11 mile walk with my old Salomon Ultra 3 mid gtx boots and I stayed toasty nice and dry. Btw Arc’s online customer service is excellent too! For climbers arc'teryx has been an important brand for a long time (they began making harnesses). Dead bird has been keeping me in jackets for over a decade. I'm not sure how I feel about the whole fashion thing (hopefully they maintain quality and customer service which have been top notch), but I am not surprised because their gear has a very unique aesthetic that is extremely sleek and cool. I guess I can start wearing my climbing gear in town. I might have to see if I can sell some of my "vintage" arc'teryx at a killing...

    Tbf moving away from Gore-Tex isn't neccessarily diluting your brand from aperformance perspective, it's a valid move once you've reached a certain size. Gore's important patents have expired and at this point, Gore-Tex' biggest advantage is their outright ridiculous mindshare when it comes to waterproof membranes. Though that could also change quickly, considering the greenwashing trend in a lot of outdoor companies and the fact that greenwashing a prodcut that relies on ePTFE membranes is nigh impossible. At some point, developing in-house, proprietary technology just becomes a ton cheaper and much less of a pain.

    • @ThisIsAntwon
      @ThisIsAntwon  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's very true and a good point. On top of that a lot of people don't necessarily need the level of water resistance Gore-Tex (or an equivalent 3l membrane) offers, so 'less performance' in that respect is not necessarily a bad thing because you might get greater comfort or breathability (or a lower price!) as a resukt

    Weird how it's popularity now has more to do with Veblen hype ("Expensive means good!") of cheaper, lower qualit current Arc'teryx, than the product requirements and manufacturing that made the pre-2001 stuff expensive in the first place. High performance specialist mountain and ice climbing gear made in Vancouver.
    Now it's just another WPB membrane shell made in Vietnam or Indonesia that sells for 5x the price of the WPB membrane shells made beside it in the same factories. Ironically often for low cost higher performance outdoor brand Mountain Equipment Co-op (who basically just initially copied the business model of REI Co-op in Seattle, but did expand to designing their own gear rather than just importing existing stuff), also founded and product designed in Vancouver long before Arc'teryx.
    What Arc'teryx did is develop excellent, but very niche, specialized equipment for a very select hardcore outdoors clientele and made it to a very high standard locally in Vancouver. That justified the price at the time. "Made in Canada", "ethical" wages, environmental "standards". Then they quietly off-shored more mainstream outdoors gear to cheap labour countries (like everyone else to be fair) for the casual outdoors people who would hear how awesome it was from the super hardcore climbers. Kinda a bait and switch. Then Adidas bought them and brought them out of the mountains with collabs, and it was all down the hype mountain from there...
    Still decent stuff, just extraordinarily overpriced compared to other functional gear literally made in the same factories.

It's kind of worrisome if it's getting super popular with people who don't care as much about durability and functionality because the quality is probably going to go down. Five ten switched focus to biking and the guide tennies are absolute garbage: which lead me to la sportiva, and then I got a pair of konseal shoes to see what you got for the extra 50 bucks over la sportiva which was way more comfort and functionality. I get diminishing returns for quality and I get paying a hair more for a name because you can say oh it's this, I know it's good. But if I have to pay a ton more for trendy bs I'm done with the brand at that point.
