I loved my Berghaus Mera Peak jacket that I bought back in 2012 to help me get through the apocalypse 😂. I wasn’t looking specifically for a technical garment at the time but I liked the design of the jacket and it’s fashionable appearance. It had practical features like zipped breast pockets, arm pit ventilation, Velcro cuffs and a fantastically protective hood. I wore it to death as it was so versatile. Seeing this is making me want to invest in another similar piece.

We can only support brands that don't care about trends and just make quality clothing. And usually, brands that fall into the gorpcore category are like that. And even though they might be part of the "hype" now, it doesn't change the fact they are a role model for others.
We need fewer trends and more genuine quality clothing.

My only worry is that some of these brands falter once they reach the heights of hype, and the quality drops whilst the price rises. Like Levi's for example

@@Ben-uf8eg I think it's about changing the connotations. If you were to wear Arc'teryx few years back and you'd wear it for performance, people wouldn't argue about that. But when the hype comes, it changes how people see it and now maybe they think you wear it because "that famouse dude have it", even though you have no idea about all of that.

There is a store in Manchester that stock a lot of great south east Asian brands in this style. Store is called This Thing of Ours. They carry brands like Comfy Outdoor Garments (the slash jacket is probably the best coat design I have seen in a long time) Snow Peak, Cayl, TMCaZ, F/CE, Merely Made, Norbit. As well as solid European brands like Hagloffs and Tilak which are akin to the Arc'teryx take on this look.

I like gorpcore because these performance pieces are aesthetically pleasing (minimal, nice earthy color palette, nice silhouette) + they are technically advanced (goretex water proofing, breathability and warmth) but I would never buy something because Travis or Frank Ocean wore it.

I came into gorpcore from seeing pattagucci during uni days a few years ago. Patagonia is still my most worn brand today. Shit's mad comfy too. I'm less inclined to buy designer outerwear pieces because they don't fit me + I want more function & longevity for what I'm paying for. I'm all for gorpcore. Even if the trend fades out it's still long lasting, durable clothing made for mountains and hikes.
Excited to see what Arcteryx+ Jil Sander pulls out this fall.

Two of my favorite TH-camrs in one video! Great thoughts and I agree, I’d love to see this blend of fashion, high quality long lasting garments and performance continue to be a theme. The more functional and wearable things are the less waste generated, and I love the idea of repairing and refurbishing garments. I’d be very interesting to see more high fashion brands do this and love what Alyx is looking at with re-soled shoes. Great topic!

I find very curious how this type of style is very very common and characteristic of Basque people (in the north of Spain). We wear this kind of clothes to school or casual activities and of course to mountain activities too because these are huge part of our culture. Everyone has a pair of Salomon boots and Gore Tex clothing and wear them any day!

Many hoods on the northeast coast of the United States dress like this. Growing up in Washington DC we wore Northface Steeptech jackets and ski pants, Helly Hansen, Spyder, and Columbia with New Balance 992s and ACG footwear . Im starting to realize that fashion is really just late and lame as hell.

I have been saving for a Patagonia coat for years because they line up with my values (B Corp, circular product manufacturing, nice range of colors). But I'm also 100% ok with getting a lower cost one from their outlet shop or secondhand. I'm more worried about it working in both California (thus Patagonia, biased because local) and when I eventually move to central Europe.
I think it's fine if people wear such things just for aesthetics. I just hope when the trend dies down they get rid of them in a sensible way.

Ngl I hear wot you saying about arcteryx as an example I seen some 2018 bottega venetta t-shirts for £129 in txmax just yesterday to some this would be a steal as the brand is very upper echelon and looks down on Gucci as a poor cousin as kering obviously own them both but to me its still just a plain black T. The sleeves had super detail and just wearing this brand would prob change my social class from middle to upper in a nano sec. However nobody in my social circle knows about Bottega Venetta not even my fashiony friends so I wouldn't even get a fashionista nod around my friends and the same can be said about arcteryx. Arcteryx being fashionable is new to me also and to most so its too niche a concept to create a stir in the industry. I seen the brand in a few places i got it confused with acquiscutum once i would rock that arcteryx coat of yours though the colour gives me Louis vibes.

I've long been trying to purge myself of fast fashion. A few years ago, I went on a hike and had so much fun that it's become one of my main weekend activities.
When I finally broke down and bought some proper hiking shoes and lightweight pants, I realized "oh, this is super comfortable AND durable." So. . . yeah, I think I'm all in.
I even bought a pair of Chacos sandals. Come at me.
