Bilal was a slave of Abu Jahal who was a head (leader) in Quraish clan and he hate muhammad so much and try to kill him and his companions and he caused too much harm to muslims by killing and torturing them. There was a friend of the prophet whose name is Abu Bakar he converted to Islam despite his richness and being a master in Qureish clan. He gave bilal and many slaves their freedom by buying them from Abu Jahal and freeing them. Then, Bilal become a very close friend of the prophet and his friends ( he become a shabi which means a close companions ). And the prophet said that there is no difference between an Arab man and a non Arab man but it Taqwaa which means the relation between the human and god. So there is no difference between a balck man and a white man or an arab man and a persian man etc. Also he gave Bilal the great duty of calling to prayer which is called Azan in english. After all of that you come and say Bilal was a slave of The prophet . Maaaaan! Islam forbidden slavery and count it as a sin. Sorry if my english is bad.

I am not Muslim but I have been looking into Islam. I watched this movie and another version of it with my mom. I got chills watching it. It’s an amazing and touching movie.
i watched the 3 hours movie more than 30 times in my life because it's made very carefully and approved by a competent authorities who knows better than average muslim. it's a real history and worth to see .. and a good example for us who live after 1400 years and still love the prophets and do whatever we can conform with what he taught and showed us what to do in our life to enable us to live happily eternally in paradise.
Trust me .. the more you learn the more you realize that only God is the most Righteous the most Merciful and nothing could compare His Power.
I'd pray for you your mom and other non muslims brothers to be given hidayah by Allah ..

The movie is called the Message. Bilal (R.A) is one of the first, if not first, Africans who accepted Islam. He was ordered to whip that man you saw by his owner but he refused and accepted Islam. The Prophet (pbuh) arranged to purchase his freedom from the owner. He became one of the most important characters in Islam and the Prophet chose him to be the first caller to the Prayer by reciting the Adhan, which was what you saw him doing up on top of the Mosque.
Amir Babazadeh correction brother, the one who is actually bought Bilal from his previous owner(Ummayah Ibn Khalaf) is actually Abu Bakr Ash-Shiddiq. Prophet Muhammad's(Peace Be Upon Him) closest companion.

Bilal was one of the most trusted and loyal Sahabah (companions) of the Islamic prophet Muhammad. He was born in Mecca and is considered as the first muezzin, chosen by Muhammad himself.He was known for his beautiful voice with which he called people to their prayers.

yeah Billal R.A he is the first who did azan . can you imagine that the azan will never stop around the world now because of distance and diffrent areas we don't have the same sunset in the same area so they called azan in my area for example and my neughbor area will call azan 1 mn after and ect ect , so that's why the word allah akbar will never stop

News of the slave who cried out ‘God is One!’ even in the midst of torture soon reached Prophet Muhammad and his companions. Abu Bakr, Prophet Muhammad’s closest friend and a wealthy trader of equal status to Umayya was sent to investigate. He came upon the open field where Bilal was being tortured for amusement. Abu Bakr did not lose his temper, for that was not his way, but he remonstrated with the torturers. He said to Umayya, "Have you no fear of God that you treat this poor man like this?" He replied saying: "You are the one who corrupted him, so you save him from his plight!" Abu Bakr replied: "Then sell him to me, name your price." Umayya, was a businessman and could not give up making a profit, so he sold Bilal for a good price. To humiliate Bilal, he added: "I would have sold him to you even if you had offered me only an ounce of gold." *Abu Bakr answered: "I would have bought him even if you had asked for one hundred ounces."*

so, a lot of people have already comment about the scene of Bilal not hitting the sahabi, i just wanted to mention one of the reason he didn't beat him was because Muslims believe that slaves were human to have belief in God, on the other hand the arab Christians at that time believed that the slaves were not human enough to have Gods(or belief system at all) let alone believing in Islam, so that is why Bilal got one of the worst punishment in history which is not shown in the video but it was mention on the books that they placed huge rock on him and so on. later on when Bilal was freed he became one of the most important sahabi of the prophet pbuh as well as the caller to prayer(which is an huge honor in islam). There is so many lessons to be learned from this video honestly... humanity and racism. this teaches us that islam doesn't have race and that no matter what color you are if you are good person you will be honored. hope that helps...by the way great video

And he bought him for two black slaves, and he did not afterwards take allegiance from anyone until he had asked him whether he was a slave (or a free man) (Sahih Muslim 3901).
