I think the main issue is that everyone is thinking about the PERFECT RUNE MASTER build. I believe when the axe was originally created no one thought about the extreme min-max end game game that would ensue. Imagine if you would be playing the game for the first time, and were running a barb, farming act 1 of hell because moving to act 2 is too hard due to bad weapon and boom, this item falls. It is an extremely interesting drop in that case because you most likely know very little about rune words, very likely not have any high rune anyway, but you would stick a bunch of perfect gem or skulls and maybe one good jewel you found and stashed and you would gain so much from this drop that it would allows you to get to Baal. You can customize it to have certain type of elemental damage you are lacking, or more life leech than ever. I think that's more what this item is all about!
My thoughts exactly! I'm revisiting this item because I'm looking for a somewhat cheap item for a double swing barb. I don't really wanna look for a Grief because of course I would choose a Grief over anything else, but it tends to be a very elusive item. My first hand was already settled with a Lacerator by default, a favorite weapon of mine for any melee characters, but no runeword or other unique would satisfy my second hand, so my rune master is just there to fill my needs/stats with cheap gems and runes and it's a really fantastic axe! Can have a few hiccups in CS hell and act V because it's not the end all be all build, but what it is is good enough.
Always loved this weapon. The eth one with a zod 2 40/15s and and 2 lo runes for deadly strike is my favorite. Live thease videos. Can't beleive no other tubers done this yet.
if it had something like "rune properties in this item are doubled", it'd be cool.

THis is one of my favorite item video's you have done. I agree with what you said. The weapon should have something similar to the dark clan crusher druid club ( think it's the one that has 20 CB, 20 DS, and 20 OW or something like that on it). If the axe had those on there and the 5 sockets it would go a long way. I found a nice none eth one, but yes didn't have the runes to invest in it, so I put in 5 shael runes for 100 IAS. I just messed around with it on my physical zealot pally, and the durability wears out so freaking quick with zeal that yo have to repair it every 5 minutes. You almost want an ETH one so with the zod you never have to repair it.
I found this with 253% ED + 5 sockets in my single player (1.14 no mods) lvl 90 zeal paladin and I love it.
In multi I can imagine this being mostly useless but in single player is brilliant... I throwed in all the stuff otherwise useless.
I added 1 shael, 2 x 37% ED jewels, 1 +15 to max dmg jewel, nothing in the last socket yet.
Get that along Guill Face, Gore Riders, Highlords Wrath and in my case mercenary with Reapers Toll (decrep for phisical inmunity) and that's about all the offensive you would ever need. Can't be frozen means you can do whatever you like with all the other equipment.
So yeah, spending like 1 year to have a perfect RM with crazy runes to find out is still a "bad" weapon sucks. But in single, my RM does 80% of the things "perfect" RM does addings stuff I would normally not even pick or sell, collected in 1 week.
IMO the ideal role for the Rune Master is a cheesy Hell Duriel killer. You start off with Cannot Be Frozen and +5 max cold resist. Add a couple Amn runes for 14% Life Leech and maybe a Shael to pump your attack speed. Then top it off with Pul runes for +75% Damage to Demons and +100 AR against Demons for each Pul. No need for a long term investment, just dump it on a mule for the next time you need it.
He's still going to freeze you. Plus, you could just have goblin toe and angelics and that pretty much covers it. Much more cost effective.
Been waiting for this video, great job. This item's value is in theory crafting and not practical use.
This one is tricky. On one side of the coin, it's an extreme investment to actually be good. On the other side, if it's buffed it has the potential to be slightly OP. However, I think this unique should be buffed.
If they at least added some IAS, maybe 15-30%, it could free up the need for those IAS jewels and allow you to perhaps invest just an Ohm rune or two in there. They could potentially add 40% more ED on the top end of the ED range. They could even add in ITD to free up the need for a Jah rune. I don't think they should make it indestructible by default because the extra ED justifies a Zod rune at least, especially if the top end ED was increased. Whatever the buff came in the form as, it would make sense to have it free up the need for one of these jewels or runes. Without that, it's not competitive and not usually worth the investment which is a shame because it is such a cool weapon.
They should probably just make it roll with 4-6 sockets instead of 3-5. That way you get a good buff without loosing the spirit of the item :)
Let's be honest: any weapon without any inherent IAS is an auto nerf =/
I feel its a good weapon for shoring up a weakness of a character while you look for something better toss a fe lower end runes like shael and amn with a decent base ED makes it a customizable weapon as you are farming for your endgame items

If Ettin it was a lower level weapon then 3 Eth's and 2 Amn's (-75% monster defense, 14% lifesteal) would be an absolutely amazing item around level 28..... but the axe is too high of level to make use of lower level runes. It is just found too late in character progression. Lowering the level requirement on the weapon would make it a staple on par with Ancient's Pledge imho. I know the base damage would to drop, but we are still talking about a major investment requiring many runs to make the item work.

I think the best usecase would be to put 1 Jah and 4 Ber in it and use it as a smiter weapon. The cannot be frozen frees up a ring slot. With Goreriders you will have 95% cb and can wear a CoA with 2 Bers and a Verdungo to reach 46% DR. This would be comparable to Last Wish, but also cost as much. I prefer the Jah instead of a 5th Ber because this gives us the ability to use Zeal or Charge vs normal monsters.
Alternatively this high cb enables you to run dual Dream on your smiter. You have enough points to invest into synergies and can wear Infinity on your merc. This would kill hoards of mobs quickly while maintaining your single target prowess.
It's is very powerful vs normal mobs
yeah but still the cost is the issue - you could reach 50% dr cap with like stormshield, strings or and treachery prebuff.

I think I've seen a lightning Zealot with a Shael, Zod and 4 Lightning facets in this thing and it was quite impressive. Interesting axe for sure.

One thing I think is a great idea is putting on 2 perfect skulls to take care of your dual leech which will open up everything else on your armor
I remember finding this on a walkthrough years ago.i put five perfekt skulls in it .
I dont remember what i was playing but i remember being satisfied with the amount of leech and finishing my playthrough with it
I know this would be busted, but I always thought it would be cool if you could put a runeword in the runemaster for flavor reasons. Then there would also be a need for the lower sockets depending on what you're building.
okay but think about this, they are going to buff early offensive auras (holy fire) and you could make an auradin with rune master + jewels that lower enemy resistances or rune master + elemental damage jewels for auradin with conviction.

I use this on my Pitzerker! 5ist on my off hand and I don't have to use raven frost so I don't shatter bodies. It works pretty well, but there's not much else I would use it for sadly
Similar. I use this on my goldfind Barb. 5x lem runes for 375% extra gold and cannot be frozen allowing me to use dual dwarf star rings.
actually it is pretty obvious for me now - it is hardcore item.
in hc, you would gladly sacrifice 25mf (against 6 isted swords) in order to free belt (trangoul belt) and ring slots.
you could wear verdungos for health and pdmg reduction or soe for pdmg i mdmg reduction.
So in exchange for 25% mf you get 15% p dmg + health
but str requirements make this kinda difficult, barbs usually use low str req equip.
It was initially released as a ladder only item.
So I think it was meant as more of a fun weapon to put random stuff in as a trophy rather than a powerful weapon
Yeah, ladder only kinda makes it worse though. Just makes it even more difficult to get the correct runes and gems.
Was a trophy to carry into non ladder in the early days of battle net.

This weapon should have the ability to have a runeword
designer think this item should use runeword but i think he doesn't know how runeword works in D2. poor designer.

I am imagining 20 points to Dragon Talon, 20 points to Blade Fury, 20 points to Blade Sentinel (for AoE chill, poison and damage), (20) points to Fade and 20 points to Venom and then invest a bit to either Shadow Master or Warrior so that your +skills gets them to atleast 17 (Warrior might even be better since the Warrior's Blade Sentinels and kicks might be quite good since doesn't she and the Master copy your enhanced damage gear fully at level 17?), Blade Shield and Death Sentry. A good player should only need one point in Fade tbh so points could be distributed differently. You must be thinking WHY would this crazy lady invest in both Dragon Talon and Blade Fury? Well the reason for that is plain and simple: fun and versatility since this game does not have free respecs and you will have a boss killing skill in Dragon Talon and powerful ranged attacks that will give you a badass ninja feeling to your playstyle while allowing you to kill enemies that are behind a river or a ledge since not everyone likes using Enigma. This build allows your playstyle to feel fresh and thematic so you don't just use one skill. 🌀🦶
having both melee and ranged just means better versatility =)
5x LEM for trav gold find barb was for me amazing setup.
I hope they rework some of these uniques.Rune master pretty cool just needs something not sure what.
Honestly it's real issue is the rarity of the things you put in it.
@@GGMentor or at least the possible potential of the weapon. Just some tweaks can bring it to a status of big value on itself and absolute royal if socketed correctly.
I used one as a budget smiter weapon early ladder when I couldn't get my hands on any other weapon, or a Raven frost for that matter.
I loaded 4 shaels into one and it was great! Oh except larzuk and I were best buds, 24 durability meant I had to repair after every mini uber. Super annoying

I was going to stick 5 ist In it and use it for a Berzerk fijd item barbarian, frees up the ring slot with cannot be frozen (or the helm slot for more magic find rather than a cham rune)
I've heard of that before it's a pretty good use for that particular build
I think this weapon would make the perfect Gold Find Barb . Forget the 1 extra socket for a lem, its not worth not being able to do damage. You can actually get kills with max axe mastery, frenzy, and dual master ettin 5os
15:51 here you have another idea, once i saw an elemental fire druid with fissure as a main spell with a "rune master" full of "fire perfect rainbow facets" and "ravenlore" for more fire damage with of course more perfect fire facets, I don't remember the armor but i thing it was a "dragon" runeword and the shield was dragon too in PVP the smollest touch of that fissure spell were an instant kill but again i don't remmember all the gear he was wearing but god was expensive as f@#$k
yes, it could be used along the way to the hoj. you would eventually hold on with perfect facets, but lets say you use 4-4, so you have -20 fire res +20 fire dmg.
hell, I see this as a swap for plague amazon, you cast poison javelins, swap to this and viola. ideal for swap is deaths web but this is almost impossible to find.
The most usable is probly a normal one with 3 sheal they are easy to drop, with what ever like deadly crushing or bleed
We would always throw this axe away lol. You could get far cheaper options with other Unq or runewords. It's great if it came with more stocks stats.

Biggest honeydick item in the game. Seems like huge potential but the investment required is last wish territory and last wish big brothers the hell out of it
I use this weapon on my single player pally, found a 3 socket and loaded it with shael runes.

So Funny. The only way I can see this being made to work close to as is would be to have it double or (1.5x) the rune effect. Shael would get you 40% or 30% with (1.5x).
This also reminds me of an idea I had for part of a revamp of Uniques.
IE. All Socket-able Unique Items
(Helms, B.Armor, Shields, and Weapons)
should roll with 0-2 sockets if not originally socketed, and original sockets to max/item if originally socketed.
This would make for:
1. A fair BIT more customization and new build opportunities.
2. Yet more variables to add to looting and item variance/value. This broken “Good” item is proof of concept, but failure in application.
3. Get us to use more jewels and runes and gems 💎 in sockets instead of Hoarding them and wringing hands.
4. Be more fun!

What did you put in your Duriel’s Shell? You found one with 2 sockets!? More Res? More life? Strength? A 15/40??
Someone gave me a 3 socket pos runemaster and I threw 3 eth runes in it for the -75% targets defense since my zealadin was having trouble hitting things. All in all, not a bad item to use since I was pretty poorly geared at the time. There are obviously many better weapons, but I didn't have any of them, so I made one.
Only thing I can think of is drop all Shael runes for fury druid until you get better
I did one with a jah and amn runes and zod in eth my theory behind was the lw is too expensive to repair .but yeah ur right rich mans weapon but fun to play around with on the off hand did amn for life steal
you might not put JAH or LO in it, but if you put 2xETH, 2xSHAEL and a P.Skull it's a good low-mid budget option until you get some good weapons

found a 269 ed 5os eth one on my SPSF. Going to make a zealer around this once I can get a CoA, also have a very good roll Leviathan and a great base for an exile sacred targe. IMO it rivals an eth death cleaver with 2 lo's, zod, 2 ohms. so hard to find ias/ed jewels on SP, so most likely will double Ohm

I don't have hero editor to do test witch suck but Im gana get 2 close to perfect non eth and stick all ist in it and see if I can run a trav barb with it. I think it'd be viable but slow.

@@GGMentor at 6:21 shows 3 Ber runes right at your cursor. This is the last time you are in your 1st shared tab. After that you search for a Ber Rune only in your 2nd and 3rd shared tab.
can you make a video on BLOOD RAVEN's BOW? If you get someone to ENCHANT you, this item will kill groups of monsters in 1 hit (due to EXPLOSIVE ARROWS) all the way to the end of nightmare and is one of the BEST power lvl items in the game for low lvl characters

Just found one none eth and perfect damage. I had to look up this video because i dont know what to do with this thing. I wish they made this item indestructible. It would free up more customization without making the item op.
Personally, I've always suspected that this axe was supposed to let you plug a runeword into it; the devs just couldn't make it work.. they couldn't get around their own item restrictions without proc'ing illegal item flags. Even when they add stuff, it has to follow conventions because breaking the game to do stuff, just ends up creating bugs. I get the impression that any number of item categories can be created, as long as it follows the item system rules.
Then the variances on this item start to make sense. - Would I be happy with an Eth, 4os, 230%? YOU BET! I'd drop 'Oath' in it without a second thought 😆😆

I just found one too, non eth 5 socketed.
I have 2 4os and 2 eth 5os....still don't know what to do with them l0l, but i'm keeping them for an axe barb; always thought the barbarians look more like 'barbarians', with axes.
Well remember you can remove anything you put in the sockets with a hel rune and a single scroll of town portal in the cube.
So don't be afraid to get some use out of them
390% ed on a eth runemaster, with +36 max dmg, 40% res all sounds ok and some other stuff is still not better than grief. Oh, how i hate runewords…

I feel like if you putting IAS/ED in it you essentially making a weaker grief. I always wondered if I could make an interesting Auradin weapon from it because you can do the 25/25 and still have some physical damage left over, maybe like shael+4 jewels for whatever aura you main.
I got one a month ago and dropped 5 ist runes into mine for MF......then I use it to get a final swing on Diablo and Baal.
6os crytal sword or ali baba w/ ists is not the better choice? you get the benefit of cannot be frozen only for the time you switch. i dont really get it :P

I got to level 85 tonight after figuring out that certain acts have a easier fight then others. I was always dying half way through level 84 and loosing XP until I stayed away from certain magic enemies. Now I have obtained the Eittn axe with 3 sockets. I need a good rune word if anyone knows ? I was stuck on level 84 for 3 years lol 😂😳
Would 5 * 40/15s make this better than a 40/400 zerker axe for a we barb dueler??? Lol. I'll never find out as i won't ever get either!
Think the quality of your videos would get a big boost with just a bit of preparation, ie preparing all the necessary runes to save awkward moments, otherwise great content
Lol this entire video was prepped, I created multiple variations of runes gems and jewels specifically for this video.
But as you discuss and talk about all possible choices for an item like this you are bound to have more options spring to mind.
Why not put lems or 1st runes? That’s the best reason for this wep in my opinion. I had a 5 sock rune master that I put all my chunk jewls in. It was decent enough for my friend who’s zealer was lacking damage. Same it full of rare jewls too. Life mana, resist ect. Another idea. Especially early ladder.
Actually with this weapon I think non eth is better…on the eth one u have 4 sockets 1 for Zod..and 1 40/15 on non eth will get u pretty much same damage as eth +zod..but u get 15 IAS
The 50% eth bonus goes to the base damage, so it's far more impactful than 40% Enhanced.
Because of order of operations.
It's base + Eth + Enhanced
I doubt it would be better, but if you needed that extra 15% IAS to hit a breakpoint maybe

It was a great item for dupers to burn extra currency. But you're right though. No way would any one ever spend that kind of cash on just an axe. Maybe it would be a great "streamer" weapon to get their communities to donate what they have before a new ladder starts. Let the community create the axe. Lmao
I just found one with 3 sockets and 232 enhanced damage. I'd probably use it on a mid level but it's required level is 72 so I guess there's no point in saving it.

Could be an interesting use, free cannot be frozen and lots of extra fire damage.
You would lose out on +3 skills and fcr though.
But I suppose if you were a firewall, or meteor sorceress fcr wouldn't matter as much

Vengeance is a relatively slow skill I think I would prefer some speed increases

well most of the uniques are useless. With cannot be frozen, maybe the best use is to give it the single purpose of fighting baal. So maybe just max out magic find on and maybe 1 for crushing blow.

Because of the way vengeance works, Physical damage is more important. As Vengeance Adds huge amounts of Elemental Damage based on your physical damage.
the sad thing is... it's once again, almost strictly worse than grief.
Perfect eth rune master with zod jah 3*ruby jewel of fervor, has 362.5 average damage (a lot worse than grief which is 437.5 avg dmg).... it has 5% more ias than grief but it doesn't have the deadly strick, damage to demon, and -25% target defend on bosses that grief has.
It's kinda a sad way to play a game to compare everything to x other item to determine it's value.
7:45. This would be the biggest waste of jewels for a barb you would never need to use res all jewels as a barb lol 🤦🏻♂️🤦🏻♂️
Could function as over protection from Uber mephistos conviction aura, or over protection in pvp.

Your not wrong but I feel the infinite possibilities of the rune master deserved a more detailed look.
People hold onto rune master because of those possibilities so I wanted to give at least some of those possibilities a spotlight.
Trust me when I say it could have been longer 🤣
