  • How to keep your Teardrop Camper from being stolen. In this video we go over the layers of security we use to keep our Teardrop Camper from being stolen. In this how to thwart the theft of our Tab 400, we explain the products and process we use to secure the trailer hitch, trailer coupler as well as the safety chains. We also show you the wheel locks we use, the locking lug nuts, and the wheel clamps we use to prevent unwanted movement. We also discuss the locking of our electrical components, like our surge protector and our power adapter "dog bones". We know that nothing can stop a determined thief with the right tools and ample time. This video is what we use and shall not serve as a guarantee of any measure, that following any or all of these steps will keep your camper safe. Use your own judgement and know that you alone are responsible for your own protection and security and this video serves as information and entertainment only.

    That was an awesome info video. If I may add there is an actively hidden GPS tracker which is activated by movements of the RV/trailer will also be a good idea to have. There are Hidden GPS trackers you can buy nowadays which you place in an undisclosed area in your trailer or RV or whatever item you are trying to protect. For example, you trying to go for a hike and you parked your trailer/RV/vehicle and you placed a hidden GPS Tracker somewhere and you activated the tracker and while you were gone, you will receive a signal on your phone through the app letting you know that the vehicle or the RV or Trailer has started to move from its originally parked location and you can actively follow its movements allowing you to contact law enforcement and be able to give them GPS tracking location. Thanks for sharing. Stay safe.

      Came to comment the same thing. I'll add an inexpensive solution to this would be to hide an Apple AirTag somewhere inside the vehicle under a seat or similar. Then even if someone stole the item, any phone, tablet or computer (iOS or Android) would ping it and give you the location. Even if they're driving down the road someone in the vehicle they're using or a passerby would allow it to ping off of and get you (and hopefully law enforcement) the location. Thieves are starting to know this so make sure to hide it well.
      I'm also adding an indoor and outdoor (wireless) Wyze cam that will just run off of the 12v battery and can connect to my MIFI device inside and will send me a push notification if there's movement from a person.
      Loving Life Hitched Up - Thanks for the great list! I'm getting my Tab Boondock Edition in the next few months so your security list was extremely helpful.

      I have duel power (electrical system and solar) GPS trackers installed on my bass boat and trailer (in case they are separated) in my 14ft aluminum john boat and our cargo trailer which is converted to an RV camping trailer. What's nice is the systems are always on because of the duel power and 24/7 monitored by an alarm company. Both me and my son have the monitoring app on our phones also. The gps transmitter is in one of the walls of the camp trailer, embedded in the fiberglass deck of my bass boat and in the floatation foam of the john boat and I challenged 2 of my son's friends to find either the gps units or solar panels (they are about the size of a half dollar coin but are disguised) and they didn't come close. And they searched for over 2 hours. I also have hitch and ball locks, removable safety chains and have a boot and axle lock on each trailer. The trailer has an entry/motion alarm and the boats has 2 separate hidden kill switches for the motors. I also carry chains to secure them to solid objects (trees, ect) when they can be. My wife thinks I am doing some serious overkill with the security but I bet she'll change her mind if it prevents one from being stolen. I worked too hard for too many years just to have some scumbag(s) steal them and even though insurance would replace them if stolen, it's the principal of it. One thing I will say is, do not skimp and buy cheap locks. Get the best you can. As a retired Firefighter, I have been trained to defeat locks quickly and the better the lock, the longer it takes and the harder and noisier it is.

    The multi-level security is such a good idea. We have to put our camper in storage sometimes, and that's a place where it might be vulnerable. My name is Keith, I watched your video, As a Tractor Trailer Driver Owner Operator I was living over the road. I am retired from that and have alot of experience with Vageriance and/or Homeless thieves. I learned that Locks only keep honeced people from stealing your thing that you worked SO HARD FOR! The way is I look at it,(Out of site out of mind) the things that you can hide or put them in your trunk is a good way to keep your things from walking away.Camera don't work, they just let you see your stuff walking away. I never used to shut my truck off when I was inside the truck stop to shower or eat.I had my Dog with me and she was very protective of her truck .She would sit in the drivers seat until I came out and she would always have a doggie bag for her. That was her treat for doing her job! Yes I locked my truck up with her inside. Now and days, NOT THE WAY IT WAS 30 YEARS AGO. People are brazing to take what is not theirs. They don't care about big brother watching them.Another way is to let people think you carry a GUN! I don't because if I did,I probably will shoot them.Just the thought may give them an easier target 😆 So just be mindful of your surroundings because the world is Not a very safe place to be so when ur parked,park in a well lite area motto hidden from other pepole.around you. Let them know ur aware of what's around you and you should be OK ?

    Thanks for the informative and helpful information. We also have a nucamp teardrop and use many of your suggestions. However, for the wheel lock, I use 4 feet of ½ inch hardened steel (harder than the bolt cutter jaws) Peweg square chain (@$100) held in place by a huge LACLEDE lock (@$90). Using a small piece of rope with a large knot, I can easily and quickly run this very heavy chain through the wheel spoke and over the axel. As you point out anything can be defeated by a determined thief, but this would require an angle grinder or torch. Both of which would take a good bit of time, attract allot of attention around the campground and possibly damage the thing that they are trying to steal.

      By attaching the chain over the axel, it makes removing the wheel useless since the axel is attached to the frame. I'm pretty new to the RV world, but but I've traveled a great deal and know that worry about theft can ruin things almost as much as the real thing. We are sure having fun getting outdoors with this teardrop.

    When I park my trailer in between trips or for the winter, I lower the tongue close to the ground and remove the handle from the jack along with the two hitch locks. Good luck trying to raise the tongue to hook up and for light tongue trailers, make it super awkward for two and nearly impossible for a single thief to pull off.

    Hi Red and TJ. I currently have some of those measures in place in my driveway, but will now may be adding more! I do have a question about overnighting security(Cracker Barrel etc.) On top of being mindful of surroundings for personal safety, do you do anything special to secure your truck and trailer while they are hitched together in a parking lot...and you are sleeping in the trailer! Thanks!

    • @LovingLifeHitchedUp
      @LovingLifeHitchedUp  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I keep the trailer hitch locked to the truck receiver with a hitch pin. and I keep the padlock in the coupler so you can not release the coupler off of the ball. This in essence keeps the trailer locked to the truck and the hitch locked to the truck.
      As far as while we are sleeping in the camper, would be a very bad option for someone to choose. The end result would be the protection of my wife and self. I am trained well to do so.
      I am planning to add some motion sensor lights and interior motion alarms (video to be out soon LOL). Pepper spray (bear spray) may be a good option. It can spray through the screen if need be.

    • @susansandusky8687
      @susansandusky8687 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you. I just have a fear that someone will steal the truck and drive off with the trailer still attached and me inside. Once I finally get out there I think I will relax a bit. At some point I will be driving cross country by myself. Safe travels to you both!

      We do not follow the same routine at every campsite. It depends how long we're going to be there or if we're not venturing far from the site. But if we're setting out on day long adventures, we do lock her up.

    TJ you make it look like you are in a South American Country. LOL. Just kidding. It's always good to secure your stuff. My first time camping here in Canada was a horrible experience. Over night some people stole all our camping chairs.

    My rig is kept in my garage when not in use so I don't feel like I need that level of security when not in use. I would do this if I stored in a storage yard and if I start boondocking.

    Here's a question For you how safe is it boondocking In the woods In a secluded area. Do you recommend bringing your weapon

    • @LovingLifeHitchedUp
      @LovingLifeHitchedUp  ปีที่แล้ว

      We have not done any "off the beaten path" type boondocking mostly because we hae not been in the more common areas for that. Not sure we would do too much of it anyway. As far as bringing a weapon goes, we advise to know the laws of the state you are in and comply so as not to have any legal issues. My current employment provides me with options, so i participate in constant carry options, safety first!

    One thing you didn’t mention was some sort of tracking mechanism in case the thief is successful, something like Apple’s AirTags. Have you run across folks using something like this?

    • @LovingLifeHitchedUp

      I have spoken to people who do the AirTag option. Do not know anyone who has used it post theft to determine the success

    Ok so we don’t have a camper but we have a tent. With your experience what do you think we should do to secure our tent while we are sleeping. We had a scare the last time we were camping and are trying to figure out what we should do. I know it’s different then a trailer but sounds like you may have some suggestions for us 😉 Enjoyed the video!!

    • @LovingLifeHitchedUp
      @LovingLifeHitchedUp  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Tents can be hard, as they can be cut open quite easy. What I have done in the past to secure my tent was the following. I used a small lock like you would use on a suitcase to lock the tabs of the zippers together. They are not the best locks in the world and can be opened easy if you know how, plus they can break the zippers if they try hard enough. I also do this when we are sleeping VERY IMPORTANT if you secure the tent while inside you need an emergency escape option like a very sharp knife (ie if a fire, etc..) a simple option is a twist tie and a bell to alert you that someone is messing with the zippers.
      Cheers and be safe.

      I have been contemplating a camera system of some sort. But would love to be able to view it on phone when not by the camper. Second issue is I am paranoid about drilling holes (holes = water leaks) so mounting them so they don't get stolen is a concern. Will look into trail cameras, Thanks! TJ & Red

    We’re thinking, yes, if they really want your camper, they could get it. But the measures you have in place, would definitely make it totally ridiculous to try. Someone would surely notice someone working at your site to take it. 👍🏼

    And if the thief manages to defeat all of that .. they’ll surely overlook a cleverly placed battery operated GPS tracker made by Logistimatics for roughly $70. The batteries are rated for 3 years. This way you can track the rv, find the thief and perhaps dispatch the thief to an eternal dirt nap. Affixing a few NRA, support the blue, & Smith & Wesson stickers on the rv may also help.
