Thank you for covering this! It upsetting to know that instances like this in the music industry are nothing new and sadly don’t seem to be going away. Even in small local scenes you hear about that one band who prey on underaged girls and see no issue with it. I know too many girls who have sadly been in a similar situation to the girl discussed in this video and sickening to know people stand up for the abusers and try their best to sweep it all under the rug.

I think the more damning allegation as it relates to Billy Joe is that the entire family allegedly knew about the relationship. That doesn't go over well for him. All of that said I had never heard of any of these bands or people until today.
Man, people think that underage sex stuff is bad in the music industry nowadays; take a glance at how things used to be back in the sixties. Just look into people like Sable Starr or Lori Mattix. Grateful Deads "Good Morning Little School Girl" says it all.
I know you should seperate the art from the artist, but I genuinely have a hard time appreciating Jimmy Page’s songwriting and contributions to guitar after reading about his relationship with Lori Mattix. It’s fucking disgusting that someone in there late 20s could find a 14 year old attractive in anyway and pursue any sort of relationship with them.
A lot of this is out of context and i don’t defend Joey I defend the band Becker brothers are great people and they believe what they said TAKE THE NAME SWMRS OUT OF ALL OF THIS Joey messed up not the others!
If there was another side that contradicted Lydia's story then Joey/SWMRS would have told it to defend him instead of just staying quiet and hoping people will forget
Man, this sucks. Green Day is my favorite band and hearing stuff like this is just so terrible. I hate how stuff like this happens, especially in a community that is always very much in support of women's rights and inclusivity. I just hate it.
As someone who is a young female and exclusively is attracted to older men, I am very aware of ALL manipulations... it's not just older guys with underaged girls... sometimes the underaged girls can exaggerate. I don't doubt that Joey was up to no good and harmed this girl... but I just want to remind people that we are seeing only one side of the situation and this person may be exaggerating on some subjects. I'm not cutting Joey any slack, but I just want to remind people that if your head is in constant misery like this girl's was, it can be very easy for your mind to go into overdrive and exaggerate on the experience(s). My dad for example hit me square in the face. He is very abusive towards me. And to be honest sometimes I exaggerate and say that he hits me ALL the time, which is not true. There's only been select situations. That being said no abuser is off the hook whether they abuse once or a million times. But I hear a lot of drastic absolutes from this girl. There isn't any, "he was a kind person, we hung out and had fun" BEFORE the abuse... all we hear is constant degrading comments towards Joey. If you've been abused, that's probably all you can muster up to think about, but again I'm just trying to view this objectively. Joey should probably do some time for his actions, but this girl put a lot upon herself as well. She should've said something to her family and therapists a long time before she continued to get hurt. As a person who seeks therapy twice every week, it's imperative to be open and honest. We don't need more content about abusers, we just need more content about being honest and open with each other. I find it more disturbing that this girl felt alone the whole time then that she necessarily got abused. I almost committed suicide multiple times for feeling lonely. Had she felt comfortable sharing her experiences with others, her abuse would be at and end much sooner. And there would be less exaggerations from both sides.
@@danframpt0n hey man, sorry, I reacted that way because I thought it was going to be something really bad, when I was that age that was fairly common I mean seriously no one would've been upset at those ages. It just wasn't unusual (I'm old, genX. )
@@Eric777-r1h I hope you have room to learn now. That difference in age is concerning. Teenagers are going through puberty and mental changes and are in a vastly different stage of life than those in their 20s. 22 y/olds would still be developing mentally (brain doesn't fully develop till 25) but teenagers are much easier to manipulate due to their brain chemistry, wanting approval and to be liked, etc, often leading to them doing things that make them uncomfortable or cause them trauma. There's an inherent power imbalance due to age as well.
for what it's worth, swmrs themselves took TWO years to release a non-apology addressing the allegations wherein they both admit to knowing about the relationship, knowing lydia was underage for the duration of it and despite also being adults obfuscate any responsibility they had to protect a child from being preyed upon by their "friend." joey is a loser and based on how those surrounding him are handling his behavior, I highly doubt he's taking time to reflect on himself but he's not the only deserving of criticism. the fact that the rest of the band spent, god, way too many words on using a brain injury as a shield against any criticism and implying lydia came forward to advance her career (🙄) is embarrassing and the rest of the members should be ashamed of themselves. bad apples come in bunches, in my experience. 🥞
@@danframpt0n definitely! they know that it's a very difficult topic to push back against without sounding callous and that's why they focused so much on how painful the recovery process was. the fact that they fell into, like, the two most blatantly misogynistic victim-blaming talking points should also make it abundantly clear that they are "feminists" when it is comfortable for them but lack any real convictions about...seemingly anything they claimed to.
Young Men in particular are naturally insane, their inhibitions are at their lowest, their brains are still developing, & they don’t have the maturity to be in a healthy relationship. I was addicted to OxyContin at age 17, & was awful to my sweetheart girlfriend. Almost everyone is awful at that age, but as long as there’s no physical abuse, hopefully it becomes a life lesson. The real culprit here is our culture that makes girls like this feel like they’re victims. That does nothing but damage their self esteem, & cause problems in future relationships.
Do you not understand the massive mental maturity gape going on there? A 16 year old is “A CHILD IN HIGH SCHOOL” and a 22 year is a legal adult. At 16, you don’t properly compared how damaging it is to enter a relationship with a person who’s an adult/ much older. And it’s not the 16 year olds fault, it’s entirely on the adult who decided to take advantage of a child. People who enter relationships with older people at that age grow up to develop serious mental health problems and are sadly scarred for life. I know too many girls who’ve unfortunately been in this situation and it’s upsetting seeing how much it has broken them. For you to say a 16 year old is a “young adult” and basically the same as a 22 year old is sickening.
There's a lot of couples that have a big age gap, difference is that most of them started dating as adults and they weren't preyed on as kids by adults. Age gaps are fine, but not when one of them is a kid
