    Noh & Kyogen with Live Music
    In conjunction with Carnegie Hall's JapanNYC festival
    Thursday, March 24, 7:30 PM
    Friday, March 25, 7:30 PM
    Saturday, March 26, 7:30 PM
    Encounter the theater form developed and preserved since the 14th century! Kyoto-based Kashu-juku Noh Theater, led by Katayama Shingo of the prestigious Katayama noh family, is joined by kyogen actors from the Shigeyama family in providing this rare opportunity for American audiences to experience the 600-year-old tradition of noh and kyogen performed back-to-back.
    In Japanese with English subtitles.
    The program includes:
    MAI-BAYASHI: Literally meaning "dance & music," a mai-bayashi is a solo dance depicting the climax of a famous noh play. This program features the ferocious battle scene from Yashima.
    KYOGEN: Boshibari (Tied to a Pole)
    Tied up by their master, two servants are thwarted in drinking his sake. How will the two rascals get a hold of their beloved beverage again?
    NOH: Aoi no Ue (Lady Aoi) In this famous adaptation of a story from the classic novel The Tale of Genji, the jealous Lady Rokujo--who had sent a spirit to possess Genji's wife, Aoi--is confronted in combat by a Buddhist monk intent on saving her soul.
    Pre-Performance Lecture: One hour before all show times, free to ticket holders.

    Two years ago I did a presentation about Noh theater for my theatre class and "Aoi no Ue" was the centerpiece play that I chose to provide an example on about how a Noh play looked like. I used this exact video and my teacher was in awe that I actually took an interest in Noh and did a presentation on it. I mean, how could I not??
    The other people in my class were uncultured and didn't care much about this because theatre was their 'throw-away' class and they all failed to see the art in Noh.

      @ravza1382,@@coolertje11 I'm waiting another 13 years to give y'all my assessment. 😛
      Actually, I may not be around by then. It was grand. Had dinner in the city and off we went to the theatre. I would go see another one again, but they don't travel all that often and I rarely go into the city. This production had subtitles projected in English above the stage. I found it helpful but it was kind of distracting at times because I was looking up and missing the performance. I say go see one if you can. If I ever get my butt off to Japan, it would be a blast to go see a few performances and sumo wrestling too.

      I mean there's literally a right-wing ultranationalist political cult that the Prime Minister belongs to and the economy has been in a recession since the 90s, but other than that it's a beautiful and culturally storied country that is definitely worth visiting.
