I wanted to have hair lights again and nobody could tell me, where she went to or which colleague could manage long hair. The receptionist told me: Everybody does it his/her way. I hung up the phone and never went there again. Your Polynesian/Maori stylist sounds very good. I wish he will be around your hair forever.🤞
Your facial features are beautiful. I do agree that protective style is part 1 for length retention for me. My hair is dense but my strands are super fine. I’ve retained more length after I stopped using a flat iron.
YES! I'm doing everything right OMG. I've been natural all my life but my mother was rough with my hair, as an African woman used to short hair that's all she knew. But as of covid, we've been learning how to be gentle, and our hair is growing so well! I'm happy to see how your hair is growing and your natural hair journey From one Nigerian sistah to another!
“Approaching your hair like a battleground” that just makes me laugh 😂😂😂😂. This video is SO GOOD! I was really interested to hear what you’d say about breakage and you didn’t disappoint! You said what most TH-camrs do not say, maybe they are not aware of it and you said it in love and care. I appreciate the knowledge you shared, your a HUGE help to the natural hair community! Keep being a great leader, example and inspiration to us! God bless you in Jesus name amen. Thank you! ❤️🙏🏾
You are the greatest Hair Professor on TH-cam! Because of you, my hair is now past my shoulders. It's been years since my hair has been this long. Thank you so much!
I have watched a ton of natural hair videos and your description of hard hair and soft hair was the simplest and most helpful piece of information. I have soft hair that breaks easily and I thought I had to use more deep conditioners. I stayed clear of protein thinking that was the issue. Great information!!!
I’ve been natural for years and finger detangled for years. I find that no matter how many hours u spend finger detangling ur roots will never be really detangled without a tool. And this affects ur growth when ur roots are matted and tangled. I use Denman paddle brush (it’s not the classic denman, it has soft rubber cushion instead of the hard one that slides out, and the bristles are denman style without balls on the end the white needles)
I love the tangle teezer! I try to avoid any brushes that have the balls on the end, because the hair will sometimes get tangled around it. I don't use a comb unless I'm cutting my ends.
When I first went natural, I was losing so much hair. All I kept hearing is " you shed 100 hairs a day ". I could not accept that was my issue. I now 7 years later got the breakage under control.
I refused to accept that too. I feel that the loss of "100 hairs a day" is the total hairs on your body and not solely the scalp. Because would have been bald a longggg time ago 😂.
@@calvinedwards2799 I wash my hair and then deep condition with a conditioner with slip. Before getting under the hair dryer I put it in 4 sections. After deep conditioning is complete, I detangle each section while the conditioner is still on. I retwist each section. I rinse while in section. I then add my leave in to each section on soaking wet hair. For me slip and keeping hair moist while working with it made all the difference. I wash weekly, do LCO, and sleeping in a bonnet keeps my hair from drying out. I do about 5 quick bans nightly. It sounds like a lot but it is not.
Helpful! I use a detangle pick and my fingers. Keeping my hair in a stretched state is ideal. When it gets to a certain length I texturize 2-3 times a year. Less bteakage while keeping my waves, kinks and coils.
Always such excellent advice! Detangling is absolutely the worst for imparting unnecessary breakage. I’m so here for more stretched styles as opposed to letting the hair shrink up on itself. Great video Seun!!
I love longer videos. You get more in-depth knowledge on how to care for your hair. Thanks for actually demonstrating it. Most of the Hair salons available to me are very ruff with my hair. I also find it difficult and stressful washing my own hair. My last big chop was on December 2020 and sincerely I feel like chopping it again. I need Help
I'm glad it was helpful!! I feel you! You got this!! I hope my wash day videos can help! And a low cut could also be a vibe if it works better for you!

My problem before was constantly dyeing my hair. I could not leave my hair alone for the life of me. Now, I have a terrible habit of putting my hands in my hair (an anxiety problem) so lately, I've been doing more protective styles so I don't have access to it 😂
I had that problem until I learnt to start putting my hair away. My trichologists recommend that I don't wear my hair out so I try to remember that especially in winter! I keep it wrapped at home and in winter I keep it wrapped at work.
@@sassouusasoo3607 lol! I would love to shave it but I live somewhere cold in winter and hair keeps my head warm. Lol! Sometimes it's so cold I wear a wig as a hair hat in addition to my wool hat. Lol! Ok seriously the trichologists didn't say never to wear it out. Just to keep it in a protective style about 5 days out of 7. If I move to the tropics, I would have a blond buzz cut.
@@sassouusasoo3607 your comment 😁😁😁 I told the same thing to my cousin. Natural for over 6 years but she swears by braids back to back. What's the point? Never got that part
This and a couple other things has seen me retain the 0.5 inches my hair grows a month (average) for the first time in my life and I'm not even consistently eating healthy. I have no doubt I can grow long hair now. So I hope this helps my 4c sisters. But whenever I do my hair (I usually keep protective styles in for a month) I make sure it's a chill day I have movie marathons and put on music and podcasts. I have it set in my calendar and I relax and clear the weekend. I don't wait to have to rush and get stressed. Then I end up fighting for my life with detangling. Ultimately being too rough and doing more damage than good. I'm a 4c girl and I'm a big believer in finger detangling with lubrication. When I use a fine tooth comb after just to see if its detangles it doesn't snag/pull out hairs so I know I can detangle effectively with my fingers alone. I also wash in twists most of the time (big or small). When I just wash my hair all together it definitely creates so many knots all my strands start scrapping with each other under the shower. Washing in twists alone solved half my detangling problems.
this is so true hahaha. when my hair was growing the most, I consistently finger detangled. All of a sudden, I decided to use combs and brushes to detangle for some silly reason. My hair started to break so often that I was having to cut it every few months. When I realized this, I stopped using tools and being so rough on my hair, and started gently finger detangling in the shower with deep conditioner. My hair is flourishing now!
This was fantastic and really informative and made me think about things I never considered. My mom was always rough with my hair and I grew up doing the same but now I will treat it better!
My hair has become so hard, feeling like wire when dry. I think it got worse after I "fried" my hair by putting shea butter on it and then blow drying on a very high heat. I planned to get a protein treatment so I'm so glad you've said deep conditioning instead of protein. Thank you very much. I'll watch anything you put out, young lady. You give very useful advice so I don't mind how long your videos are. 🇬🇭🇬🇧❤️
hey seun! I love your hair videos because they make me really love my natural hair more ❤. I also appreciate you not trying to sell us products (lol)! Keep going + never feel discouraged!!
The longer my hair gets, I realize the more shedding I am getting. I hate it. Wash day has become unenjoyable because I lose so much hair. Why is that? But then again, I leave my hair alone for about two months but still. My strands are so fine but I still have a lot of hair. Idk, my hair is a big confusion but I do my best to take care of it.
Yo 1:46 triggered me. Aww hell no. Lol! How I detangle my hair every week: 1. take down the style and remove any shed hairs that I can feel. 2. apply pre-poo let it sit for 30 minutes under 3. Use a wide-toothed seamless comb before wetting my hair. 4. After shampoo and deep conditioning, I detangle damp (not wet or dry) hair in one-inch sections with a leave-in detangler, leave-in conditioner and a medium-toothed seamless comb. 5. every 6 weeks I use a detangling brush such as the tangle teezer. I have ultra-fine ultra-kinky/coily hair. I lose less hair this way and I get less knots and tangles this way. I can't finger detangle only because my hair is so fine I can't feel all the strands so I end up leaving shed hairs which leads to more knots and tangles. I don't detangle wet hair because that is when my hair is the most fragile. I don't do long term protective styles anymore. 7-10 days and then I take it down detangle, shampoo and deep condition.
@@scallopsgreens1961 yes my hair is healthy and high density. I do not have handfuls of breakage or shed hairs. I'm not sure handfuls are a good sign. See your doctor, stylist and trichologist.
I cut off all of my hair in 2018, rarely used combs and my hair grew a ton. Started using combs again and I've got a lot of breakage :c I'm feeling sad, but I'll do better. It's so annoying that there are so many rules for my hair -- it's really stressful.
I don't know if it's been mentioned in this video but I recently learned a good way to take down braids and twist with minimal breakage. 1) Spray hair liberally with water. 2) Take a good leave in conditioner that gives slip and detangles knots (maybe a wash out conditioner if you intend to wash the hair soon after). Apply it to the strands, focusing on the beginning of the braid at the roots (that part that usually clumps up with dirt) and the ends where you will begin to loosen the braid. 3) Leave it for a few minutes to soak in and loosen the clump. 4) Begin to loosen hair, I recommend finger detangling. Reapply water and conditioner as needed. 5) When done with a section, add water and leave in again and lightly finger detangle, just enough to pin it up or put it in big braids or twists or fully detangle at this point if you don't intend to do it during the wash).
As Shamrock said.......Spraying with water first causes some people's hair to matte instantly because the cuticle swells up and locks the knot/tangle in place. A leave in detangler is safer. Some leave in conditioners do not have any slip. The rest is good advice.
Prayer works for some people. Lol! I saw a trichologist. The trichologists told me to moisturise my hair daily and deep condition weekly. That works. I keep it in twists that I detangle every week.
Always helpful info, Seun. I'm on the finer softer side of the spectrum, I may not be eating enough protein, will work on that. Also am taking a break from adding hair to my braids. I have about 20 twists in my hair now without added hair. I do have creamier leave ins that my hair likes too. Will pay closer attention to my hair now. And will switch to a brush in the shower to detangle. Thank you❤
I saw about an inch of length retention in two months using mini braids without extensions vs no length retention in a year with faux locs, crochet braids, etc.
Great video! You've helped me and my son take it to the next level. Also, I've noticed that I can't wash my hair in hot water. Thank you much ❤ from baltimore.
I have the same issue where my hair gets super soft and easy to break, protein treatments were NOT helping and I was really worried so I looked into elasticity and tried a keratin reconstructor, that helped quite a bit. I think how long you keep water running over your hair play a big part in that, I'm going to try using less shampoo, it's taking forever to rinse it all out.
@@Iwasonceanonionwithnolayers yeah I have ultra fine weak(due to genetics and medication) hair. If it wasn't for Aphogee I would be bald. I use all their products according to their instructions. So the daily green tea, the fortnightly 2 minute and once every 4-6 weeks the 2 step. People get confused between the 2-minute and the 2-step. They are not the same and can lead to damage if used incorrectly. The instructions are on Aphogee's website. In winter in London my hair can get brittle then I hold off the protein until spring and concentrate on moisture treatments but I still use the daily green tea as a very light protein treatment.

I don't even understand the concept of detangling the hair with A BRUSH. like, before youtube, I never even seen it, nobody ever in my country does that. I tried it, my mom tried it, my friend tried it. the brush can oy go with your hair if it's already detagled, like, if the tangles are there, how is the brush even getting in?????? if it's already difficult for the comb to get through the hair, imagine a brush which is basically a bunch on combs at once lol. it only makes everything super difficult and it immediately breaks the hair strands, even if you start with the very end, like 3cm. I really can't even imagine how people can think of putting a whole brush into their hair if it's tangled up like, how??? and why??? lol I know it's soundibg crazy for lots of yall but honestly, that is so weird to me
I'm glad i came across this video, I've been suffering from hair breakage for over a year now, my hair has reached a plateau. I noticed that i have mixed strands some are thick while some are thin. When i compare the broken strands, i noticed they are mixture of thick and thin, but more of thin hair strands. I do not know what to attribute to the cause of the breakage.
Get a full blood panel done. I discovered that my hair is actually genetically weak due to me being a Thalessemia carrier. It affects your iron and your blood....two things that you need to build strong hair. Also re-visit your styling techniques and hair care. My hair is very dry. If I don't moisturise it daily and deep condition it weekly it will break. I mainly wear my hair in twists, flat twists or two or three french braids. If I want to change the style I might wear a hair piece one week, a faux puff the next week and a week the next week. I do not wear any other styles regularly because of the tension on my ultra-fine strands. exercising and scalp massage also helps. Any illness like Covid or something hormonal like pregnacy/menopause will affect your hair. You can take hair vitamins too.
@@marleyhill34 i was also thinking about doing a complete blood count, even though i don't have any signs and symptoms of iron deficiency. I wash my hair every two weeks, in between wash days i moisturise using fenugreek tea leave in conditioner and sweet almond oil to seal it up. Thanks for your feedback

I love the fact that Seun gives actual useful tips and doesn't just dump product names.
Finger detangling is great 👍🏻 for length retention.Conditioner helps a lot to reduce breakage
Even my finger tip my hair out… it’s a matted mess if I don’t comb thru
I second this 💗💗
@@Buggu3 yes my hair needs a comb 😅
@@Buggu3 😁 what about a combination of both? My hair loves both

Your facial features are beautiful. I do agree that protective style is part 1 for length retention for me. My hair is dense but my strands are super fine. I’ve retained more length after I stopped using a flat iron.
Thank you!!! Yes!
YES! I'm doing everything right OMG. I've been natural all my life but my mother was rough with my hair, as an African woman used to short hair that's all she knew. But as of covid, we've been learning how to be gentle, and our hair is growing so well! I'm happy to see how your hair is growing and your natural hair journey
From one Nigerian sistah to another!

Aw Im so glad these have been helpful to you!!
I have watched a ton of natural hair videos and your description of hard hair and soft hair was the simplest and most helpful piece of information. I have soft hair that breaks easily and I thought I had to use more deep conditioners. I stayed clear of protein thinking that was the issue. Great information!!!
Im so glad that it was helpful!!!
I like longer videos that have helpful info, like this one. Thanks for sharing!

I've tried to explain this sooooo many times to people. I'm so glad you demonstrated this so that people get the picture.

You guys be gentle with your hair o👽👽
😂😆😆 thank you!!
Seun is my hero I needed a family member like her.
It makes me really really happy to be able to help!❤️
@@SeunOkimi thanks you should feature me in one of your videos 😉
I love the tangle teezer! I try to avoid any brushes that have the balls on the end, because the hair will sometimes get tangled around it. I don't use a comb unless I'm cutting my ends.
yes! its definitely a good alternative!
@@timothyc.8666 Lol true
🙌🏾 that's what's up, different pace to each as long as as you progress in your hair journey. Love that for you 👏🏾 👏🏾
How did you get it under control?
Nice!!
I detangle my hair with a conditioner first before going into the shower. I use a wide tooth comb and it has worked for me. I never comb my hair dry.
Always such excellent advice! Detangling is absolutely the worst for imparting unnecessary breakage. I’m so here for more stretched styles as opposed to letting the hair shrink up on itself. Great video Seun!!

this is so true. one day i realized how rough i was and how hard i was gripping my strands.
My problem before was constantly dyeing my hair. I could not leave my hair alone for the life of me. Now, I have a terrible habit of putting my hands in my hair (an anxiety problem) so lately, I've been doing more protective styles so I don't have access to it 😂
me tooooo
I love your long thorough explainations❤
I have a "hand in fro" problem, I'm constantly pulling and tugging at my hair till it breaks 😭
And I have fine hair 😭
I had that problem until I learnt to start putting my hair away. My trichologists recommend that I don't wear my hair out so I try to remember that especially in winter! I keep it wrapped at home and in winter I keep it wrapped at work.
@@marleyhill34 Then what's the purpose of having hair if it's always away 🤔. JUST SHAVE IT .
@@sassouusasoo3607 lol! I would love to shave it but I live somewhere cold in winter and hair keeps my head warm. Lol! Sometimes it's so cold I wear a wig as a hair hat in addition to my wool hat.
I love this!
You're so beautiful!🥺 Also, I love how passionately you speak on all things hair! I wish to be as informed on it as much as you!🤞🏾❤️
Always enjoy your in-depth explanation videos. Thanks Seun 💛
I'm really glad it is helpful!❤️
this is so true hahaha. when my hair was growing the most, I consistently finger detangled. All of a sudden, I decided to use combs and brushes to detangle for some silly reason. My hair started to break so often that I was having to cut it every few months. When I realized this, I stopped using tools and being so rough on my hair, and started gently finger detangling in the shower with deep conditioner. My hair is flourishing now!
this is so important!

A good detangler is needed
@@jackieburns5257 which would u recommend?
@@kittensmitten3287 i like Sveda products, Pail Mitchell has a food one. Wash the haig while itscnraded, detangle 1 braid at a time
Your hair is so long now, more natural hair videos pls🥰
Yo 1:46 triggered me. Aww hell no. Lol! How
I detangle my hair every week:
1. take down the style and remove any shed hairs that I can feel.
2. apply pre-poo let it sit for 30 minutes under
7-10 days and then I take it down detangle, shampoo and deep condition.
has your hair grown well and healthy since then? and do you experience less breakage? like how much a handful or??
@@scallopsgreens1961 yes my hair is healthy and high density. I do not have handfuls of breakage or shed hairs. I'm not sure handfuls are a good sign. See your doctor, stylist and trichologist.
I cut off all of my hair in 2018, rarely used combs and my hair grew a ton. Started using combs again and I've got a lot of breakage :c I'm feeling sad, but I'll do better. It's so annoying that there are so many rules for my hair -- it's really stressful.
U got this 💪🏾🙂

Great video as always. Ty sharing tips that can help us all with breakage.
Thank you!!!
I have to detangle before any water or product touches my hair
As Shamrock said.......Spraying with water first causes some people's hair to matte instantly because the cuticle swells up and locks the knot/tangle in place. A leave in detangler is safer. Some leave in conditioners do not have any slip. The rest is good advice.
@CheekyLovesCheeseCake:) The ACV & Water mix is the truth. They also have pre-poo's like the African Pride one that's like a jelly
@@WarZone28 The African Pride detangling pre-poo is BOMB!
My hair is coarse plus doesn't like anything 😭 it just wants to be left alone I'm sure it needs prayers🤣
😂😂😂😂😂
Prayer works for some people. Lol! I saw a trichologist. The trichologists told me to moisturise my hair daily and deep condition weekly. That works. I keep it in twists that I detangle every week.
Very nice video Queen.
love the longer video! this was awesome!
Seeing you use comb today make me realize I have never seen you use comb on your natural hair.
Always helpful info, Seun. I'm on the finer softer side of the spectrum, I may not be eating enough protein, will work on that. Also am taking a break from adding hair to my braids.
I have about 20 twists in my
hair now without added hair.
I do have creamier leave ins that my hair likes too.
Will pay closer attention to my hair now. And will switch to a brush in the shower to detangle. Thank you❤
Yes it painful to leave out the extensions but sometimes that rough hair is too rough for finer strands.
Nice! You are very welcome! External protein treatments on you hair may help a lot! I have a video on my channel dedicated to using protein as well!
I saw about an inch of length retention in two months using mini braids without extensions vs no length retention in a year with faux locs, crochet braids, etc.

Aw thank you!!
I have the same issue where my hair gets super soft and easy to break, protein treatments were NOT helping and I was really worried so I looked into elasticity and tried a keratin reconstructor, that helped quite a bit. I think how long you keep water running over your hair play a big part in that, I'm going to try using less shampoo, it's taking forever to rinse it all out.
ooh! yes, with the water too! I'm glad the reconstructor you used helped a bit! Keratin is a type of protein as well!
I have the same problem which Kerstin reconstructor did you use ?
@@salmamukhtar1689 Aphogee. My hair immediately shrunk up the way it used to and appeared/felt thicker
@@marleyhill34 Yeah, keratin is protein but the reconstructor is not a protein treatment. I've tried to explain it but ppl still be getting confused. Everyone should be fine if they follow instructions. It says on the bottle how often you can use it

I learnt a lot from this video 🤗. I also found out by coincidence that increasing beef , eggs , all animal foods helped my hair to grow well.
Yes protein
Yes food intake and diet weigh heavily on naturalhair quality as well, it's unfortunate most people are unaware of this.
I really can't even imagine how people can think of putting a whole brush into their hair if it's tangled up like, how??? and why??? lol I know it's soundibg crazy for lots of yall but honestly, that is so weird to me
Welcome back sis....thank you for posting

Your hair is amazing. OMG😍. You are amazing.
