I need to slow down my speech. I speak fast because I get interrupted alot. But maybe I get interrupted because I speak fast and don't hold people's attention. Its a viscous circle !

I talk fast most of the time owing to anxiety but when I'm calm, I speak normally. Another thing I have realized is that if remind myself to not speak fast, I speak normally as well. But as you mentioned, I should breath and pause while speaking. Thanks

I'm also going through the same here. I wish to talk normal like everyone.
I remember we had one presentation and I was like, I'll start with the introduction. We decided to rehearse on it in the group, I started and they were like it's too fast. It took like 20minutes for one lady to guide me on how to go about it. 🥺😌😌

I talk fast but it frustrates me when people call me out on it as if I am intentionally doing it. What I hear and say in my head is normal speech so I dont know how I would go about speaking slow. Speaking slow feels like I am talking in baby talk or acting mentally challenged. I know it has a lot to do with my anxiety. I grew up in a family where there where a lot of verbal arguments or if I was in trouble and often I would be confronted by someone and I would carefully have to choose my words or get a beating. Then as an introvert contending with everyone speaking over me. I get this anxious burst of speech as if wanting to get over with. Sometimes i think people just arent attentive listeners. So if you do understand me and I am talking slow it means I am talking to you like an idiot with slow comprehension.

But listening to a fast talkers causes anxiety, so basically you are implying that your feelings are more important . Fast talkers are hard to understand, anxiety inducing and terrible for people who speak English as a second language….so it seems like y’all are the ones in the wrong and need to work on it or get used to be avoided

It's also something to note that people with ADHD, such as myself, tend to talk really fast as well. This is because our brains move much faster and we have like 60 thoughts going through our heads at once, so if we don't get everything out there into the world as fast as possible we might forget it all mid-sentence.

@@tycho8473 This is also a great point! It's easier to speak on autopilot the faster you talk. Speaking slowly forces you to think about what you're saying which can cause you to mess up more

Have you tried just laughing at yourself when you stumble over your words😀 it could help reframe it in your mind and maybe over time it can help you become more comfortable with your tiny quirk. I stumble over my words too 🙂 I also find it funny when I trip and fall, hey we're human and some errors are just life's little funny surprises among day to day living. Imagine if we never made silly mistakes like trip, stutter, funny typo etc and everything always happened the way we think it's supposed to, that would be quite monotonous 🙄. Those silly unexpected human moments are a part of life's humour 🙂. Perhaps that's just life goofing off🙃

I talk fast apparently, its just natural. I know I'll get listened to without interruptions etc. How do you talk slower and still keep up pace with your mind. I also had to watch the video at 2x the speed else I'd lose focus. I'm always asked why I walk and move fast too by everyone. Maybe my brain doesn't produce enough GABA and thoughts race and I'm extremely excitable both positively and negatively. I never used to care about it, I only care now because apparently kt makes you appear nervous, I'm always asked why I'm nervous when I'm feeling perfectly confident, apparently it's tied to the fact that I speak fast and I want to appear as confident as I feel. When I talk slowly, I feel out of sync with thoughts like my thoughts are ahead of my world and I get muddled which I now realise is probably yhr wreason I'm so terrible at writing because there's a limit to how fast you can write and then I feel that lag and lose my plot. I also want to improve my writing which I imagine would be improved by learning to talk slower. I care now because I thought I would avoid writing by going into maths and computer science where yoh don't really have to write in a very structured way and that was the case throughout my entire bachelor's but now but now I'm doing my masters by research so the whjole degree is a dissertation and I have to write and I'm procrastinating because writing is so daunting because getting thoughts onto paper through writing is so difficult

I notice a lot of younger & Hispanic people speak English very fast. It’s been so irritating I just had to research it. Your comment on sounding more N.American was interesting., I didn’t realize that was something we did but if that’s how others perceive it then I will consider that as a reason. I just started noticing it in the last decade. Has this always been an issue or do you think it’s been recent increase as well? Thank you for your video!

Many languages, other than English, are spoken very fast. When people with a fast native language speak English as a second language they tend to speak English too fast and their words run together. As well, many ESL students learn English from a teacher whose 2nd language is English and will speak and teach their English with their first language accent. To learn English well, find a teacher whose first language is English and 2nd language is that of the students. A Spanish first speaker should not be teaching English to Spanish speaking students, the English taught will have a Spanish accent. Likewise, an English first speaker should not be teaching Spanish to English first speakers. They too, will pick up an English accent in learning their Spanish. The exceptions prove the rule and please slow down (you know who you are).
