    Trust me, you do not want metal to metal contact. When you are playing, you can here the scraping of the two. A cymbal sleeve is a must because if you don’t use one, you will keyhole your cymbal. It doesn’t matter what you believe, it is just the facts.

    Why would you want metal to metal contact between your cymbal and stand regardless of threading? I fell like I must be missing something because I've never had a cymbal stand in 25 yrs of playing that didn't have some sort of plastic/resin barrier to prevent this.

    One more thing....go to any hardware store and get clear PVC tubing 1 foot. Cut in lengths to allow the wing nut to stop near the top of the threading when put on. Install these lengths of tubing by using dish soap on the threaded rod if it is tight. If not, don't worry about it. Been doing this for decades on old Ludwig stands. No metal against the cymbal. Of course, if you like key holes, that's up to y'all.

      I've used round, white Bic pens in a pinch. Pretty specific hack as it only works on the narrower rods and you need one of those pens and a way to cut it, but lasts indefinitely and if it saves one cymbal then my work here is done lol

    Always use a plastic or rubber sleeve to cover the stem of the cymbal stand. If you allow metal to metal contact between the cymbal hole and stand stem, you will ruin the cymbal by causing the center of the cymbal hole to "Key Hole". ( wear the round hole to an oblong hole) I've seen $300 cymbals destroyed without the drummer even knowing.

    I can hear the cymbal making contact with the stand, that will pick up in recording. Ive been using felts and plastic screw on cymbal holders for almost 40 yrs. No metal to metal contact and You can easily adjust your cymbal movement. Also on h h clutches that are completely threaded, you can use electrical tape over the threaded portion where the cymbal goes to keep from ovaling out hole on top cymbal. I guess everyone has a different method.

    My biggest issue mounting cymbals was with a large china cymbal I had in the 90's with a deep cup. It was mounted vertical instead of horizontal and was heavy. Washers kept warping and bending. I ended up using an even longer sleeve and a spring and round cap wingnut special made for it. The wrong washers and mounting can damage a china splash or rancan quite quickly. All perfect takes on keeping the cymbals looking and sounding great. Great video!

    I have been playing for decades. All my cymbals are professional brands. All my cymbals are tilted mechanically. I use plastic sleeves and top and bottom felts AND top and bottom metal washers. I have recorded in the studio and have played out - tighter rides, looser crashes. Point: Every once in a while, you will wear through the sleeve and cause a little wear. A small keyhole in a cymbal DOES NOT RUIN IT. It sounds exactly the same with a new plastic sleeve. Much to do about very little. Peace.

  • @SchecterMongoose
    @SchecterMongoose ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I would have led with using a sleeve. Metal on metal bad.
    Use a sleeve, small felt on bottom, cymbal, felt on top (appropriate size, not just large) then nut. If you use a large on top it may be too tight and you'll get cracked cymbals, that's why I said appropriate size. The cymbal needs to deflect but not hit the wing nut.

    I've always worked in industrial shops and there's always pneumatic hose handy... The best is 3/8 or 10mm OD polyurethane hose... It fits tightly around the stem but just under the diameter of a cymbal hole. It's very tough slippery plastic and very cheap. I always keep a foot or so in my gig bag if I loose a sleeve. I can easily cut a new one with my pocket knife and I can cut it to just the right length so I can tighten the wingnut against it yet keep the cymbal/felt assembly to the tightness I want!! If that's not your line of work, I'm sure you know someone or know someone who knows someone that can hook you up!! And seriously, a foot or two of the stuff will last you a while!!

    I've been mounting my cymbals on the metal cupped washer. But I always had the clear hose like sleeve go down to the bottom. This sleeve only came up to start of threads, then thin felt down to washer, then cymbal, thick felt and wing nut tightened to hit top of sleeve. This set up has worked for me since the 70's, cymbal has full motion, cymbal hole never damaged and nut has never loosened. Just fine.

  • @bosssentaurus512

    Or: Go with this method. Cymbal sleeve to prevent Key-Holing on the hole of the cymbal, small felt on the bottom (I use a thick one for my China Crash because otherwise it moves too much), Cymbal goes on top of that, then a thicker felt, Depending on how much motion and swing you want your cymbal to have, and then use Cymbal mates or cymbal clamps so that it being loose on the thread isn't an issue because they squeeze the thread if the stand and keep it tight. Protect you cymbals guys!

    I have been using Grombal cymbal sleeves for 10 years and their design is far superior to felt cushions and wing nuts. You mount them onto the cymbal and slide your cymbal on top of the stand. Allows cymbal to vibrate freely without felt muffling the tone and protects from any metal to metal contact.

    The only two cents that I'll provide is that, in my experience, with larger felts (top and/or bottom), I find that the cymbal doesn't move as freely and naturally. Smaller felts just seem to work better and let the cymbal motion flow more smoothly, i.e., more range of motion. If you want less (perhaps to clinch and tighten up the sound of a china), larger felts seem to work better in that application because they clamp down the cymbal more effectively.

    I do agree with you saying that you should put small felts on the bottom to have as much room on the top, but i don't agree with you saying that you don't need the rubber sleeve part. The reason that cymbals come with those in the first place is so that the cymbal isn't clashing on metal. What ultimately happens if you play for a long time without the rubber is cracks start to form at the center hole. And also, the top felt doesn't necessarily need to tightened all the way. It really depends on the setting that you as a drummer are playing in. If you're a jazz drummer that's trying to go for a lot of crash and ride texture, you may not tighten the nut as much or don't tighten it at without a felt, since the top felt determines how much the cymbal tone is muffled. Overall, good video for beginners but I just wanted to state about the rubber since cymbals are expensive and I don't want drummers being mistaken and damaging the cymbals.

    First flip you’re metal washer over with the dome facing down. This will allow more space for the felt fit properly and allow more space for the cymbal to sit better below the threading. Most common company brand stands have some sort of plastic sleeves to help protect from metal to metal contact. Also I don’t like to have my cymbals that loose and bouncing around. Specially when you have multiple of cymbals close in next to each other that they will flap around and hitting you’re other cymbals.

    Great Video Jeff.
    Please people..watch the whole video before commenting....He does use and show/explain to us, the plastic/nylon sleeves around the 4:00 mark.
    We ALL agree that using nothing will keyhole your cymbal(s).. and noisy too... Not Good.
    I'm a new drummer..instead of felts..I have been using silicone/rubber as cymbal(s) spacing.... Also I have been looking at Cympad Chromatic. Has anybody use these before if yes.. How do you like them..or not..???
    Be Safe..!!

    Bronze is a softer material than steel, therefore; the cymbal will wear. Never put metal to metal. I use, and have for too long; yamaha stands with the one piece washer/sleeve. One felt on the bottom, cymbal then tightened wing nut against the sleeve with no top felt.

    I had a cymbal that stayed in one place for so long that all the pivoting it did wore a groove into the hole. Basically making it look like a key hole. That was bc I had no plastic sleeve on the pin where the wing nut goes.

  • @WimTavernier
    @WimTavernier ปีที่แล้ว

    I use for 40 years now the Tama Titan, Stilt and Roadpro stands and there are standard wing nuts, cymbal mates in plastic. There is no contact between your stand and your cymbal. That’s the problem with the cheaper ones.
    Better to spend a lot more money and have professional stuff. Otherwise you can give your money to buy new cymbals ….

    So I have Been doing it right the whole time, idk, seems obvious to me. Maybe it's because I work construction and have always had a very high mechanical aptitude. But it's just always seemed so obvious that the threads will do allot of damage to cymbals. And also that restricting too much movement of the cymbal is also bad for durability, and more importantly sound.

    • @SonofStormblessed
      @SonofStormblessed ปีที่แล้ว

      Don't get me wrong though, I do appreciate the video. I know well enough not everybody catches on to what another may see as obvious. I do it myself, just not usually with stuff like this.

    “You have been mounting your cymbals wrong” - buddy, you still are. Man, you really should just take down this video. It’s full of such terrible advice which will end up causing a lot of damage to cymbals of inexperienced players who end up following it.

    This is detrimental on so many levels. It also does not take into account certain brands and their specific designs. Yamaha stands are designed to use a large felt on the top and bottom. They have a sleeve/seat that is long enough to accommodate this. DW, however, is designed to use a small felt on the top and bottom. They employ a moveable sleeve/seat system to change your cymbal movement.
    Please please please, going forward, learn about your subject before you attempt to teach. People will assume you're telling them the truth. It's not fair to them for you to speak poorly and derail their growth/education.
    Knowledge is extraordinarily powerful. A lack of knowledge is often even more powerful...in a bad way.

    Sorry but this is plain wrong. You need to protect the cymbal hole from metal-to-metal contact. Rubber hose, smooth plastic hose, etc. will suffice and protect the cymbal. You can hear the cymbal and stand hitting. This is a bad idea, folks!

    Buy the Yamaha cymbal stand tilt sleeves, they are threaded so they screw down and lock in place. Sounds like you're talking to a 6 year old, this stuff isn't rocket science, It's common sense. Metal on metal is NEVER an option, period!! Any new drummer should buy themselves a pack of extra felts and plastic cymbal sleeves, and keep a roll of electric tape in your emergency parts bag.

  • @patrickreda3280
    @patrickreda3280 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Duh. Where is the sleeve?
    This is NOT the proper way of protecting your cymbal.
    Therefore, the lack of a plastic or rubber tube sleeve is ridiculous and poor instruction.
