Whoever you are, you are amazing. I've played LoL for a long time and wanted to try Dota because I heard there were less trolls. I had no idea what I was doing, so I quit. I thought I might as well try it again as I got much better at other MOBA's. I still had no idea what I was doing. I cme here and it is so much better Thank you!
This is the perfect beginners' guide. Covering all basic necessities without touching on complex and confusing portions. Those can be learned while playing. Thanks! Appreciate it.
Lol, stopping at the first minute: This is EXACTLY what happened to me!! I played one game, got lost, and never played it again. At the same time I tried to play lol, got trough the tutorial, and now 1,5 years later I am platinum and I love the league
I was looking for something new to play and came across this via web. I want to thank you for taking the time and doing a video from people like me that are way behind the learning curve. Thank You and wonderful explanations
I've put about 138 hours into it so far (which I know isn't much for a moba) and my main gripe is how sluggish heroes feel. They feel like they react really slow to a click or cast half the time. Not like lag slow, but more so you tell someone something then they take a second to process a though then proceed to do it. I guess after playing league for about 5 years I'm use to instant movement and reaction time
I am level 25 in LoL but im a fresh beginner in Dota 2. What starter hero (champion) do u think i should start off with? BTW: in LoL i main support champions like Sona ETC
If you are like me (I also support in LoL), then you might like: Lich (super lane sustain plus a killer ult), Venomancer (can play as support/ganker or as a carry), Shadow Shaman (wow so stun, much push!), Lion (wow so stun, much gank!).

You should have stopped at "...your team will yell at you" as to when you leave the game. Sorry, kiddies, games are meant to be fun- yelling at people and proving your immaturity ruins the experience for mature players who understand winning isn't fun- enjoying the game is, win or lose. The DOTA 2 community (as with all the MOBAs) have established their childlike reputation and hostile immaturity, and have driven away legions of possible players. Last thing I need is someone more than half my age screaming at me for *their* perceived "only way" to play the game- as if they never had a first game. Nope. As much as I like the game, the community drove me away with their poor attitude and incivility.
Watching the chat in the beginning of the video already made me not want to play this, game looks ok but I'm not willing to play with communities like this.
Jaym Esch You got a really good point there. I have been playing Dota 2 for the past 2 years (or ~1600 hours if you were to believe Steam) and so far the one thing that really drives me to stop playing for a couple days up to a month is the community. The game is fun, up to the point where two other people start yelling at you in russion while a third consistenly spams "report him" in the chat. It's gotten to the point where the first thing you learn in every guide about Dota 2 is how to ignore people when they annoy you. Thankfully there is a mute button, but this kinda thing being in guides shows how bad it really is. Dota suffers from what basically every team multiplayer game suffers. I call it the "Conceived Liability Effect". Your score and performance is not fully in your own hands, you are relying on the good will and hard work of four other people. If one of them fails, you score drops. You eventually start seeing other players as a liability. Every mistake they make is a dent in your score, every missed opportunity another 25 points loss of rating you have worked so hard for. If you think about playing this game, I suggest finding people who are also interested and then learn together. You not only don't get yelled at, your in-game performance increases tenfold because communication and coordination work a lot beter.
the community immaturity is a reflection of the mechanical design of the game. A single weak player can determine a one hour match in the first 5 mins by feeding. one decent hero getting a 2 level leg up in the first 5 mins will lead to an increasing level disparity and by time you hit level 10 he'll be level 15 or 20 and at that point a single hero with medium control will steam roll an entire team. For most players what you want is to right away approach this as a high level player else its not fun for you or others you play with, hense all the hate.

dude seriously? why u have to play with bots until 10 lvl? what the hell is wrong with you people? you can start playing with real players after 3-5 lvl... and untill to get 5 lvl its 10-12 games... and you know why is that happening? because of they noobs joining the game and they dont know how to use a good flash to escape... they feed or doing any shit and ruin our games... that's why.. so deal with it

so you randomly afk for 5 minutes in a game like this and are surprised people have a problem with it? it's vs easy bots so i personally wouldnt care in the least, i've played long enough i can easily win a 1v5 vs easy bots, but newer players wont have such an easy time of it. the game goes on while you're afk, enemy bots (or more importantly players in a real match) will gain levels and gold and do nasty things to your teammates and buildings while you're afk. so how about you try something crazy and do the random shit u need to do before or after you decide to join a game, not while it's ongoing? also i'll let you in on a not-so-secret secret about LoL: reports dont mean a damn thing. if you actually got banned, it was most likely that the automated "leaver buster" system caught you being afk or leaving several games in a row. a dozen idiots reporting you for "unskilled player" or flaming or whatever wont actually matter. Great work Quill18 very nice tutorial (I have played league of legends but when i started dota2 i didnt know what it was happening i was just moving my hero- champion what ever and i was dieing all the time). Thank you for this awesome friendly to noobs video . thank you man i recommend this video to all bigginers out there that don't know how to play dota(like me). Ty again :)
DOTA 2 Just finished downloading here and I don't know how to play. Can someone please explain to me what are the controls and how to play it? Thanks in advance. 2016 November 24 HERE!!!!
You sir just explained this game SO well. I come from League (basically cause it sucks now, at least for me) and this actually helped me a lot. Thank you +1 subscriber
I play Smite. Never realized how simple Smite is compared to other Mobas. I'm sure some would even say Smite isn't a real Moba because it's so simple. This game gives you a lot to take in. This video was helpful.
I just tried dota 2 and it was terrible. It almost made me feel mentally ill because of how illogical it was made. The first thing I notice in game is: WHY DON'T ESCAPE BUTTON DO ANYTHING??? The second thing I notice is: WHY DON'T ABILITIES SHOW CAST RANGE???? Some many small things about this game makes me wanna puke. Pressing tab to see score? NOPE. Pressing Space to follow your character? NOPE, but let me show you random places around the map. Poor graphics but still my cooling fan goes nuts = Bad optimization of game I loved the original dota from Warcraft 3 and almost wanna install it again but Dota 2 is infuriating crapfest I have ever seen. Maybe if I played a thousand games I would learn to live with the short commings but whats the point if I can just go play League of legends???
uroš lekše To be honest I am starting to enjoy the game. It is just illogical at first. Do you mind recommending some changes you have made to the game to make it better?

I've played LoL for 2 years or so Gold 2 rank atm so pretty decent at the game but I don't know what dota 2 guide I should watch because I can understand this is for the absolute noobs to the game.
Look, If you'te interested in a learning boost just add me on steam, I have almost 500 hours of Dota 2 gameplay, so I should be able to give you some really cool tips, and maybe we can play sometime. Steam: Sobreiro12 [PT]
Great video. I played DOTA back when it was still on Warcraft III servers. It's nice to see that it is still basically the same game. I like your commentary and your explanations were easy to follow.
Lol is easyer to play thats why its more fun (To me) to me dota is hard and most things dont make sence so Im more then 500x better in lol then dota XD
Gabu - San Even braindeads can play it and thats why they are in bronze division. Lol its easy i agree but since u r playing against other players its the same thing.
Finally, a good guide. Until then i was only playing LoL , and didn't expect dota to be that hard to understand x) I'm still struggling with the last hits
BallisticMouse uhh.... they are both just MOBA games... they are not similar at gameplay or whatever.... DOTA is a lot slower in gameplay than League if you are a league player and Vice versa. but you cant say its noob friendly since you it isn't easier... that depends on the player.. not the game. so don't be that guy....
Interesting. I started programmeing from your videos in unity, and now I return to your videos 1.5 years later. I remembered your name because your name. Thanks for starting my hopeful future
Nick Cardarelle My mind wasn't made up. I'm used to great action games such as Quake, Street Fighter and Starcraft. When I watched DOTA or LOL it was just a bunch of forest trolls running in straight corridors spamming fireballs at Towers. I thought, I must be missing something and decided to watch this guide to understand what's going on. Well this guide has made it even more clear to me that this stupid gameplay is basically all it is. The only reason I can think this would be so popular is that you can basically start playing your first ever game online and participate to a team. Try do do that in the aformentioned games and you are TOAST because those games are SKILL-BASED, WHICH IS WHAT ESPORTS SHOULD BE ABOUT
this is very very helpful, i used to play LoL and was new to the courier and killing our own minions and statch and stuff. god bless you dude it was very very very helpful
Thanks for posting this! I'm trying to learn Dota after playing LoL, and this really helped me wrap my head around some of the new concepts. Very useful.
Hey thanks dude! You just taught me how to play and now I won't embarrass myself in front of my husband and his friends who have just installed the game for me!! I'll show 'em up ;)
Amazing guide, I'm a League player and this game really is quite different, just by looking at the tutorial it's more complicated then LoL and definitely requires better gold management.
Found this very helpful indeed, im yet to actually play yet thought i would use some initiative and take a glance at a guide. Now going to try honing my skills, or lack of, taking on some bots! Thanks for the vid dude
Well... after watching FreeToPlay I wanted to start out with Dota2 - and this is a really good guide! After playing some LOL over the past years it's time for something new ;)
NICE GUIDE sir, i play League of Legends but do to its LONG down time for maintaince today i have decided to dry Dota 2. but i dont want to noob it up bad so i looked up videos of the game. you have the best beginner guide out there NICE job. thanks for the info i am going into game now
haha thats so funny i did the exact same thing the 4.20 patch took 24 hours so yeah. i wonder how many league loss to dota 2 today. Riot na servers fail again!
This is the best video I have seen .....EVER... for a beginners guide. Great vid and brilliant explanation. Hahaha however iam still scared shitless going into this game thinking , my god what have I let myself in for! Thanks fella..
I started dota 2 about 4-6 months ago before i started the game i saw this video its really helpful to me. At first it was hard dying a lot and less kills but i got use to it now even thou some players are really rude still i enjoy dota 2 For some tips for players who are new if you arent confident on playing public match and you feel your not ready and still play bot match try to practice the hero you are good at and if your ready play it in public match.(i was like that when i was a newbie) Thanks for the video it help me in dota 2 :)
Thank you so much for this video! It helped soooo much...this is so much better than just starting off the game with zero knowledge. It was very very helpful :)
I'm watching this pretty late now and know almost all of the stuff you showed us but it was still fun watching and its easy to understand. I don't know if you posted a more recent version of this video coz you are probably much better at dota now then you were then and you could probably show us more. I'm gonna look that up right now. If you didn't, it would be a great idea and i would like that a lot and probably i won't be the only one who's gonna like that... good work.. ;D
Very helpfull video. It explained throughly in detail why i should stay lightyears away from this game. Although i might just watch others play. Much like i watch you play Civ5.
Thanks so much that helps a lot! I'm, literally right now, downloading Dota 2 and my friends love it so I want to get into it and I've heard about competitions blah blah blah... and that's helped loads so thanks!
To all people out there who are seeing this video: This video is form 04 - 2012, now DotA is even more balance (slightly more balanced, but it was nearly perfectly balanced before) now has more heroes (constantly being changed in order to balance the game), looks 2.8 times better than in this video (better interface, better client, better item apareance, heroes some got reworked) and has more tutorials. It even has a feature now called "COACH", a player can group up with you and accompany you through the game helping you in decisions like "what should I buy?" "where should I go now?" "should I level up what skill?". Ask for a friendly hand and progress :) Good Luck and Have Fun.
Well, the word easy really only applies to the individual preference.Personally my best characters when I was new were Lifestealer and Huskar but I'm not sure if they would suit you.I think the easiest way to find what heroes suit you is go through the list and look for ones that you think look cool in appearance, and try them. What kinda guys do you think look cool?
Thank you for this video. Really, thanks a lot. There's so much information & intricacy to this game that your intel has helped me to not re-invent the wheel a few times. This will give me a head-start, and I appreciate your effort that you put to build this video.
Well I found this to be a damn useful guide even coming from being a moba player, I have played lol for a long time as well as smite for less time, but this has different mechanics with the stats and it was very nice to have an easy guide to watch.
VERY informative video. I play LoL and was thinking of trying DOTA for the fun of it. Some stuff was repeats but a good chunk was very useful and would have taken a while to figure out.
This vid is like a time capsule. It's fun to see how much the game has changed ☺️
Who else is watching this while Dota 2 is downloading? :D
Omg, i am 😂
me too!

+Terr aria me!!

Its not that bad honestly. You just need to get a basic idea of everything and you can just improve from there.

do you have a link or something on where did you download it?
its on Steam

Well DOTA 2 is free, so I don't know why it would be involved in an exchange involving items of value.
congrats on your gift of a free game.

During the closed beta, you could buy an early access pass on Steam.
quill18 yeah it was $30 bucks, but getting a key was kinda easy. Also you got a couple common sets if you paid the $30 for the early-access

I was distracted by the chat :DDDD
Same LOL
Wow that was some foul chat going on at the bottom of the screen O.o
Yes it's an online chat.
Never ceases to amaze me how much racism goes around on PC games. Every PC game I've played so far is full of it.
one of the many videos i got to watch now to get into this game :). thanks for all the help and making the time to make this video.
Downloading dota2 now after playing lol. Im a bit discouraged by those shops and items :/
Johnny Good SAME THING HERE!!! It's just soo strange to buy this things xDD!
Johnny Good check out guides and such. and depending on who you pick you can find guides in a tab in the left.

Am I the only one who thought this guy sounds like Ted mosbey from How I met your mother?
So true xD
He introduced a girl to his friends that he met on WoW in one episode from season 3
plot twist: being an architect didn't workout, so now robin brings all the income and ted now plays dota 2 and makes youtube videos.
Man Thank you so much ... I am a beginner in dota 2 but still I am more pro than my friends ... your video really helped ... keep up the good work
What happened to old dota!

+mhauck99 Thx

You sir just explained this game SO well. I come from League (basically cause it sucks now, at least for me) and this actually helped me a lot. Thank you +1 subscriber
make a tutorial how to make a account in dota2
You need to make an account for steam then download dota 2.
I have a account
Ya i am
It is really easy to creat a steam account but to downloard doto 2 it takes a hell lot of time and data
PÄSÄÑ BËTHMÄGË |Doto 2
is it like somewhat clash of clans
is this a joke?
I play Smite. Never realized how simple Smite is compared to other Mobas. I'm sure some would even say Smite isn't a real Moba because it's so simple. This game gives you a lot to take in. This video was helpful.
AI ROBOTS:
**Sacrificing their lives for the game!*
THIS DUDE:
**randomly goes "bla bla bla"*
I just tried dota 2 and it was terrible. It almost made me feel mentally ill because of how illogical it was made.
The first thing I notice in game is: WHY DON'T ESCAPE BUTTON DO ANYTHING???
The second thing I notice is: WHY DON'T ABILITIES SHOW CAST RANGE????
Some many small things about this game makes me wanna puke. Pressing tab to see score? NOPE. Pressing Space to follow your character? NOPE, but let me show you random places around the map.
Poor graphics but still my cooling fan goes nuts = Bad optimization of game
I loved the original dota from Warcraft 3 and almost wanna install it again but Dota 2 is infuriating crapfest I have ever seen. Maybe if I played a thousand games I would learn to live with the short commings but whats the point if I can just go play League of legends???
Dont call a game bad if you cant configure its controls, lol.
uroš lekše To be honest I am starting to enjoy the game. It is just illogical at first.
Do you mind recommending some changes you have made to the game to make it better?
Just what is easier than level 1 mobs?

Only a quick survey and you’ll rack them up!
I apologise if Dota 2 was too hard for you. I guess dota can only be played by people with a brain.
Does it come in blue?
Playing dota 2 for the first time, this video is really helpful, im glad he makes this type of content...
hahahah check out the chat hahahah :D
I've played LoL for 2 years or so Gold 2 rank atm so pretty decent at the game but I don't know what dota 2 guide I should watch because I can understand this is for the absolute noobs to the game.
Look, If you'te interested in a learning boost just add me on steam, I have almost 500 hours of Dota 2 gameplay, so I should be able to give you some really cool tips, and maybe we can play sometime. Steam: Sobreiro12 [PT]
didn't find you
Mmh really? Tell me your steam..
I think it's jimjim617
My alias is Jímer and I have a picture of shrek :)
Welcome To DOTA 2, You Suck by PurgeGamers is a great guide. Check it out.
Noob
That's the main divinding point for LoL. It's so easy even braindead people can play it. I'm a SMITE player myself, love the constant rotation/tfs
Gabu - San Even braindeads can play it and thats why they are in bronze division. Lol its easy i agree but since u r playing against other players its the same thing.
sotha manith u mad
Sander: lol
my mom broke my computer because i smashed my dad after loosing a dota came
Finally, a good guide. Until then i was only playing LoL , and didn't expect dota to be that hard to understand x) I'm still struggling with the last hits
DotA 2 pro tips! play league... is less bullshit
Don't be that guy Moon. Both games have their own perks, LoL is simply more newb friendly, imo at least.
BallisticMouse When I first started playing LoL, it took me FOREVER to get used to the game. Still learning after 2 years of playing.
the game looks cool but when i play it i just think it sucks
i just downloaded the game and i didnt know what to do
This is why this video is for Lol
***** i downloaded the game cause i saw that it was 1st game on steam
Guys if you seriously need strict guidelines to do things just uninstall the game, lock your front door and stay inside your house forever.
Ok you tried, that's all that matters.
Interesting. I started programmeing from your videos in unity, and now I return to your videos 1.5 years later. I remembered your name because your name. Thanks for starting my hopeful future
Check the user reviews for DotA 2 on Steam. They're funny :D
lol Russians xD
Yeah whatever this moba garbage ruined esports as far as I'm concerned. RIP Esports
well then why did you watch the video if you came into it with your mind already made up?
Nick Cardarelle
My mind wasn't made up. Try do do that in the aformentioned games and you are TOAST because those games are SKILL-BASED, WHICH IS WHAT ESPORTS SHOULD BE ABOUT
y0sh1100 That is the stupidest thing I have ever read.
y0sh1100 that comment gave me cancer...
y0sh1100 If you think this game is so easy, just go win all the tournaments for it and prove us wrong.
this is very very helpful, i used to play LoL and was new to the courier and killing our own minions and statch and stuff. god bless you dude it was very very very helpful
Thanks for posting this! I'm trying to learn Dota after playing LoL, and this really helped me wrap my head around some of the new concepts. Very useful.
the in depth explanation has really got me excited to play this game
Great guide! I'm not a RTS player, but this is something different. I'm going to give it a try.
Also: LOL @ 09:23 » "No one is gonna be BOThered".
I actually watched the whole video and I feel like I am a renewed person now. Thanks!
thanks! this video really helped. i was always afraid that i was gonna end up playing and not have a clue as to what i am doing. :)
Well... after watching FreeToPlay I wanted to start out with Dota2 - and this is a really good guide!
After playing some LOL over the past years it's time for something new ;)
Thanks! I am one of the gamers that you talked about in the beginning and that helped!
I just got this on steam and this really helped, also know one really cares about the commentating but u are a great speaker
I started dota 2 about 4-6 months ago before i started the game i saw this video its really helpful to me. At first it was hard dying a lot and less kills but i got use to it now even thou some players are really rude still i enjoy dota 2
For some tips for players who are new if you arent confident on playing public match and you feel your not ready and still play bot match try to practice the hero you are good at and if your ready play it in public match.(i was like that when i was a newbie)
Thanks for the video it help me in dota 2 :)
Best introductory video I've seen on Dota 2, thanks!
awesome video man! kinda wish it was longer though, felt so seamless learning from you and enjoyable.
While it was being installed, I watched this guide. I didn't know anything about DOTA. Thx, now I know many things about it :)
Same
:)
haha same here
Lmao I'm doing the same thing
thought i was the only one lol, 1 hour left to install.
If you didn't, it would be a great idea and i would like that a lot and probably i won't be the only one who's gonna like that... good work.. ;D
Best way to learn the game is to play a game or two and then watch this video. Thank you quill18 you cleared all my doubts! Cheers =)
I am currently a LoL player, and I am having plans on playing dota2 and LoL at the same time. THanks for the heads up dude :))
you are awesome man i always have been trying to get into MMO games and stuff your are so in depth and act like its us talking to your POV thanks!
I like dota2 but I dislike the players that always say their team noob.Seem like he is the best player in the game. This is an awesome video,I like it.
i watched this today and started playing a few games and i freakin love this game!
Just getting to learn Dota 2 and I never played any games of this type...Thanks for the great tutorials...*subed*
The chat feed kept me pretty entertained alone lol good guide too
To all people out there who are seeing this video: This video is form 04 - 2012, now DotA is even more balance (slightly more balanced, but it was nearly perfectly balanced before) now has more heroes (constantly being changed in order to balance the game), looks 2.8 times better than in this video (better interface, better client, better item apareance, heroes some got reworked) and has more tutorials. It even has a feature now called "COACH", a player can group up with you and accompany you through the game helping you in decisions like "what should I buy?" "where should I go now?" "should I level up what skill?". Ask for a friendly hand and progress :) Good Luck and Have Fun.
This was really really helpful plus i like the way you explain it... it's really entertaining... i saw the whole 45 mins video😂.. thankz; )
Thank you! You really helped! Btw, this is the 3,000th comment on this vid... awesome. Another sub for you.
I like watching tutorials like this though I have been playing for a few months.
Thank you for this video. Really, thanks a lot. There's so much information & intricacy to this game that your intel has helped me to not re-invent the wheel a few times. This will give me a head-start, and I appreciate your effort that you put to build this video.
Thanks man, I watched this while Dota was downloading. really helpful!
