For anyone stumbling upon this vid now. Dota 2 now has a much better tutorial for new users that actually teaches you how to play the game. The video does clear up a lot of things though and is a very good source of information
There are some important aspects that has to be taught to league players. The most important thing that isn't taught in many guides is healing. In league, if you get low, you have a 8 second recall and you spend the next 30 seconds walking back to lane. Doing so in league will not incur any penalties if one crashes the creep wave under the opponents tower to reset the wave. However, in dota, there is a courier system that enables people to ship regen items like salves, mangos, clarities and tangos. Therefore in most scenarios during the laning phase, dota heroes do not need to go back to base in most cases. But league players are bound by the mentality that if one needs to heal, one has to go back to base. This mentality screws up the play style and makes league players look like complete bots when they start dota. The next important thing that isn't taught to league players is the concept of dying. There is a large stigma to dying for league players. If you die, your opponent gains 300 gold, gains a free wave 120 gold and denies your wave (120 gold for you), making one death worth roughly 500 gold and lots of xp, enabling a lane to snowball out of hand. However, in dota, dying is not all that bad except for the pos 1 and pos 2. Supports can go super aggressive so as to draw pressure from the opponent so as to let their carries farm safely. The penalty of death is not as huge as it is in league as long as the pos 3-5s can waste their opponent's time. League players enter this game playing very safe, believing that their lives are very precious and blaming any other people with a high death count that is drawing pressure. This safe play means that league players end up doing nothing for the team. The last important thing that is not taught to league players are the roles. In league, roles are simple, top lane, you play tank, jungle, you play ganker, all you have to do is to outplay your opponent and stomp your lane to win. But in dota, different positions have different game plans. It's not just about stomping your opponent in lane. But this concept is never explained to league players. League players end up playing offlane safely so that they can scale like what they do in league. League players play support by harassing opponent in lane like what they do in league and end up soaking xp without pulling/stacking. League players end up joining in lots of fights playing safe lane carry because that is what they do in league. League players are essentially screwed when they play dota because they play dota like they play league. Most guides just ignore the basics of basics simply because they think it's so self-explanatory. No it isn't - especially for players that have developed habits from other games.
Another one is that rax's don't respawn, a small one, but it'll definitely throw league players off at first, also that "super" creeps give less gold (and i think less xp? I'm newly returning so idk what's changed in it's entirety)
As a league player my head almost exploded from the amount of complexity. I can see similarities between the games like some of those runes being like red and blue buff but the whole high ground thing, being able to kill your own creeps, and a hidden shop outside of base blew my mind
Then you have aghanim item, which basically give your hero 2 new skills Oh wait did i mention about "talent tree", now you have another 6 options to customize your hero
@@ayobruce8211 I've been playind dota for years and picked up league 2 years ago cause some new friends play that over Dota. I can definitely say that that macro side is much easier on league. However the jukes are completely different for each game imo. Also instant turn rate was cancer to me in lol when I started. I think my biggest complaint for lol coming from Dota is how insane the scaling is and how extremely one sided some matches can be to the point of you basically being obsolete in lane if the kill you once. I'm curious to here (if you're a league player) what your biggest complaint would be for Dota 2. If there was one thing i would bring to league though it would be the ability to pump fake your spells with your stop key (ones with animations at least not instant ones like leblancs leap skill or whatever it is XD)
I actually just downloaded Dota 2. Have never tried this or Dota before but I just heard how complicated this was compared to LoL. After watching ur vid, still looks insanely complex, but really appreciate you making this and highlighting the things you do and don’t need to focus on as a beginner. Nice job man !
Most DotA players I know suck at League too, it's okay. DotA gets too much credit for being complex, but it really isn't. There's just a few extra things you need to keep in mind.
@@antemedon Like how to counter their techies with adequate positioning and outplays, magic damage resist auras and bkb, not pushing towers straight on but at an angle, strategic ward placement and sentries and when to get rid of those mines at secret at the best time. This is for 1 hero, not counting their team or your team much and the fact that all of that isn't free. It takes time and money. I think your statement isn't true for these reasons, but if you take small bites, you can eat up all the information. And yes it's true I'm dogshit at LoL.
@@klemenvidmar6307 @Klemen Vidmar see, most DotA players haven't played League long enough to even care to comprehend how similar both games are. I'm a veteran DotA 1 player who switched to league later, so I know how legit my assumptions are. We have teemo who's pretty similar to techies, so all that applies here too. Towers in DotA are dogshit. They're slow af and extremely easy to kill. You can't solo a turret in League because their defences skyrocket when minions aren't around. We have wards too, and wards to counter wards. 50% of every marksman's role in League is about positioning because they always get targetted first. DotA matches are pure chaos because every hero is trying to outplay every other hero. League has synergy. The only real differences in league and DotA are the elevation advantages, the ability to remove trees for strategic movement, denying creeps, the secret shop and a courier. League relies on teamwork and balanced out teams way more than DotA. League is also far more flexible because you can decide to play a physical damage champ as an ability damage one, or a tank as a nuker ane get away with it, DotA champs progress in a far more linear way. Agility heroes are the only ones who usually build attack speed, strength heroes are usually the only ones with a lot of health, etc etc.
I like how simple you made the game sound lol, the whole "you don't care" just takes away all the nerves i had before downloading the game. I played Dota back in the day then onto to League for the past 10 yrs. Thought i would suck trying out Dota 2 since i found Dota mechanics difficult but after watching this, I really don't care whether i suck or not, just gonna jump in and see what happens.
This is a godsend. I've wanted to get into Dota for awhile, but every guide is really long and tries to explain every little thing, drowning the important things for a new player to know in tediousness. Being able to watch this video and learn only what I need to know to start playing without feeling overwhelmed is exactly what I needed
Wow! I was wondering whether to start playing DotA or LOL now I've made up my mind. I really love the depth, intensity and complexity of the game mechanics.
man i actually remember when invoker hes ult didnt have a cooldown when i was a brat i watch who's elder to me playing dota 2 when they play invo i always look to there finger doing combo in clash
@@milk-pk4xk Probably, but you can also pay for cosmetics that make something far more noticeable than they originally are, like Mirana's infamous sperm arrow.
Main differences to look out for in Dota as a beginner coming from LoL: 1. You have to buy Teleport consumables in Dota. Everyone can (and must) buy TP. In more skilled brackets, players will TP to protect their teammates from dives and their towers from split pushers, so keep that in mind. 2. You don't turn instantly when moving in the opposite direction as you are facing. There is a short delay called a 'turn rate'. 3. You can kill your own team's creeps, denying the enemy gold and experience. You can only do this with auto attacks, and only when the creep is below 50% HP. 4. There are lots of point-and-click CC and burst abilities, so don't rely on your skillshot dodging skills from LoL to outplay enemies. 5. You cannot recall to base. You can, however, TP to your fountain by using the consumable TP item. 6. You lose gold when you die. 7. You don't have to be near shop to buy items. When you're away, the items will be put into your "stash" and can be retrieved either personally or using a Courier. 8. You don't have Runes, Summoner Spells or Trinkets. 9. If you have enough gold, you can "buyback" and respawn at base. Use this only when you absolutely have to, as buyback has a long cooldown and part of your remaining death timer gets carried over to your next death. 10. Jungle camps do not have respawn timers. They spawn at every minute mark, but only if there are no units in their camp at the time. You can use this to "block" jungle camps from spawning. You can also "stack" camps by pulling the creeps out of the camp zone as the timer is about to hit the next minute mark. 11. There are no Red, Blue, Dragon or Baron buffs. The Baron of the map, Roshan, drops an item called Aegis (similar to how Eye of the Herald is dropped from Rift Herald) that when picked up gives you a stronger Guardian Angel revive effect for 5 minutes, but takes up an inventory slot. Keep in mind that no matter who kills Roshan, anyone can pick up the Aegis. 12. You can divert tower aggro by attack-clicking an allied unit in the tower's range. You don't have to actually perform the attack though. 13. Mechanics and abilities that would be considered OP, unbalanced, anti-fun and game breaking in LoL are commonplace in Dota. Whether or not this is a good thing is up to you.
@Madifuho, Dota is A LOT more strategical game than LOL. Only the highground system brings a lot, because, using it, you can win fight even if enemy dominate you. Supports are not just harrassment tools, they have to control runes, stack and pull creeps so enemy gets no gold and exp and you dont push lane, and with the new 7.33 supports also control lotuses for a good hp and mana regen, and control wisdom runes for ex (cus good supports traditionally lack 1-3 lvls comparing to cores), with a new teleport so enemy dont gank you. Also supports have to bring utilities to core hero, possibly being their personal courrier, ganking allies of you won your lane. Supports must place vision all over the map, and break enemy's vision. Supports have to do everything so their core hero survives and enemy core goes to fight with jungle creeps. Abd it is only laning stage for one of 5 positions. I agree, in micro moments LOL is harder cus most skills are not simple point-and-click, and DOTA has, i think, only 1/3 skills requiring aim. But learning how to hit a skill is much easier than learning all macro mechanics in DOTA. Even with 200 hours as this pos 5 support I explained before, you can easily forget about stacking or pulling because it is really hard to remember all.
@@frosten5746 DOTA sounds like it's more my speed than League even though I played League for a few years (downloading DOTA now). However, I disagree with the general statement "learning how to hit a skill is much easier than learning all macro mechanics in DOTA". At least for someone like me, building habits to the maximize use of the macro mechanics you've described in DOTA sounds a lot easier because you can research, analyze games, and then take a systematic approach to help you form the habits. But the micro mechanics in League, particularly the skill shots seem to only be something you can learn by baptism of fire because there's no reliable way to practice and there's virtually no way to transfer knowledge or skill from one player to another.
Dota is so much fun if you have a friend who you want to catch up to. I started playing cause my friends invited me. It was honestly so much fun to learn, whenever i figured out a new mechanics id try to get it down as quickly as possible. Sadly now if i play dota it takes too much of my time so i just chill playing leauge and valorant.
The patience taken to make this video is actually inspiring I tried to get my friends to play dota and it was always challenging yet fun next time I'll just share this video lol
I just started playing the game. My first 2 heroes were support.. 2 dragon head thing and the litch both were very interesting.. I'm honestly surprising the depth of litch abilities after 1 match I found he's like super buffer with an op sheild ability
most of the mechanics he's explained have been around since dota mod, I'd say they're all pretty basic concepts. sure some things might change a little but most of it is pretty core concepts.
Настолько прекрасно описал минимальные знания о доте. Я в шоке, сколько нужно знать новичку. Я это уже прошел, но до сих пор дота сложная и поэтому интересная игра. Спасибо за твои видео.
I was addicted to LoL and managed to quit on March this year (2020). To be honest , Dota 2 is way too complicated compared to LoL which I just found out the mechanics i never knew before such as creeps pulling, camps stacking, and many more. And these things made this game more versatile and creative. And thank god, within these mechanics, they helped me to get through Legend 3 recently and I recommend for LoL players to try out this game for once.
Yup true. I played DoTA for about 6 years, and I tried playing LoL for new experience. LoL is more like Mobile Legend, you need to purchase champions to play them. New champions are too OP and the game is not balanced at all. DoTA is different thou, all heroes are free, u can just try using them in practice or lobby and get to know them better. DoTA is quite difficult at first, but after hours of playing and seeing different style of play, u can become better.
@@lineaspera_1 So true!!! For me, LOL = Mobile Legends and DotA 2 = Vain Glory (mobile version). And btw I hate ML fck ml and fck mobile gaming. I didnot meant that seriously, some are good tho.
This game is so convoluted. How could they think to not make a functional new player experience? Or competent video series at least? This video truly was the best starter guide for newbies.
Cause dota was: Play against bots with bots for hundreds of hours. Play against bots with humans for a couple hundreds of hours more. Que game vs other humans.
Worst than that, dota 2 has the WORST matchmaking in the world. I've only played like 5 matches and I was queued with people who plays the game since the day they were born
The summary could be more detail. There is an order to the objectives: safe lane tier 1, take enemy jungle, ward it, take mid tier 1, pressure safelane t2, take smart fights and set up for rosh, take rosh, use aegis to take enemy triangle, squeeze enemy off entire map, lock them in base, use aegis to hit hg, wait a bit, get 2nd aegis, win game.
Thanks for mentioning high lvl mechanics and telling people not to worry, I’m a league player but I’ve been too afraid to try DOTA because I don’t want to learn so much all at once, the repetitive “you don’t care” really helps with that
This is wrong. Most ppl can not communicate because they don’t know how to effectively communicate with teammates. I won so many games just because I keep telling my team what is my next step, ask core when they feel comfortable engaging, and telling people where could be a good place to play. Toxicity drops a lot if you can make reasonable proposals to get other people on board with your strategy.
@@davidnnn6986 I have no idea which games have you been playing - but in my DotA games, noone listens to a word said - with that said, 99% of the chat is something totally unecessary, if not negative and toxic - When I started playing with my chat mutted, the quality of my games rose up to about 250-350% percent. I was literally playing with the same toxic people, but since I wasn't listening to their whinning it was so much easier for me to concentrate and know what to do next.
I would have added to the "every hero is op" part that every hero also has weaknesses, and items can patch those weaknesses to make heroes more powerful that goes beyond just giving damage or tank.
He did say that, just in different words. At least that's how I understood it as I'm listening to this video and downloading DOTA for the first time at the same time
Im a league of legends player and i just started playing dota 2days ago, thought this game was gonna be more like league but no 💀. just enjoy the game. everyone is carry at some point in the beginners game. as you play alot in unranked you will be matched by more experience (as well as trashtalkers) that will make you analyze the mechanics of the game more. GLHF / GGWP. [as of the moment, i enjoy playing "Drow Ranger", "Earthshaker", & "Phantom Lancer" especially in mid-game ganking]
When I started years ago the best tip I ever got was how to use the guides. Items are complicated but guides makes it to where you don’t have to worry about what items you should be buying
As a league player, not much experienced with it(6-7 months), i think it's seen more challenging and confusing at same time. I think it would take time to get used to some things like playing to get objectives with a new playstyle and itemization(seem more interesting than lol). btw I really liked the wave control.
I love the "you don't care" aspect of this video and I wish more tutorial video makers would do this instead of trying to overcomplicate or overwhelm viewers on what's meant to be a **beginner's** guide.
I'm a league player for six years now and I want to try out DOTA 2, actually installed it yesterday and played some with bots. This vid is actually educational and I'll probably start matching with other players as well after practicing.

@@halfiemmm929true, all my experience of league flaming has prepared me for the real challenge…dota flaming 😂😂😂 they ain’t gonna phase me I heard it all 😭
I think the most important thing for new players is to play with bots, increasing their difficulty from passive to unfair. You also can do it with team of other human beings. And learn a little bit about settings, so you can adjust them to your personal preferences. Then watch guides about heroes and some streams (to learn how game will go with actual players), read items descriptions and try it in private lobby. Then you're good to go play actual pubs and not completely ruin your good mood because of toxic teammates screaming at your mistakes.
brand new to dota here, played league of legends for a while thanks for the video. I like how you say when "you don't care" because there is so much new players shouldn't focus on it seems
The biggest help you did was explaining these mechanics and adding "you don't care" as some people get overwhelmed when these things aren't that important when you're just starting out
Very Good guide, aware of the most important things new players needed to learn I didnt feel overwhelmed, you went straight to the point. Excellent video.
@@NoOne4k Okay but a long long time ago in a galaxy far far away, a bearded monk with a laser sword cut of a whiney boys legs and yelled he loved him, all while standing a little bit higher on a mound of dirt than him.
I enjoy the "Everyone is OP so its ok" balance philosophy. LoL has been terrible for years from reverse powercreep + playing favorites + overtuned new champs
The number one difficulty for me playing dota has been identifying what is the priority right now. I have been watching alot of dota beginner guides to understand what is generally done to win the match. Also, being new I don't really understand when a fight starts, where a fight might break out and most importantly, what am i supposed to do when that happens and who am i targetting if i am in the fight with the opposing team. The new player mode that Dota recently brought in has been very helpful with teaching me new things however, at the same time it doesn't teach you everything and I also understand that comes with time. I guess I just want to learn everything all at once rather than in pieces and that really frustrates me. BUT I'm not gonna give up!
If you're using int hero, build mana regen w/ bottle or tango. Agility hero, build damage with bottle or tango. Strength hero, build hp regen w/ bottle. Also, don't forget to fill your bottles so you don't get one-shotted by mirana
it seems League prioritized lane matchups and mechanics and Dota is a knowledge check game where team comp and counters are commonplace and heavily relies on Macro... It is a very completely different game
Hi! I just downloaded DOTA 2 a few hours ago. This is my first time playing a game with a birds eye view so there’s def a lot I have to learn, so thank you for the video. I’ll take what you’ve said and try my best to apply it :D
For now “you don’t care” is actually really useful! I played this game without any, ANY, help. I just really liked the complexity. I’m glad that that didn’t push me away.
One thing I noticed that stopped me from exploring dota as a league player was the amount of animosity they have for league players and for league of legends itself. I often sense a vibe of insecurity and comedic hatred towards my game that i see on the internet, even my dota friends in the real world have smug look on their faces when i invite them for lol, like they want me to know that its not good. I don't feel comfortable around these people, a superiority complex these people have. Its repelling, i would say.
Just wanna say thanks to you man. Being a Dota 2 content creator will help the community grow which has been the game's problem for a very long time now.
Remember back in the day i started Dota2, my first think that i want to do was to play all heroes in the game, get to know how every single hero work. It was a long process (took me almost a year). i started with orge magi cause he was very funny
i was inspired to play Dota 2 after watching Ti7 and Ti8 Insight i wanna know why many people love this game, im going to be a first year college soon and i wanna try it whenever i have a free time im really glad ive found a video like this to atleast teach me some ingame mechanics.
I am a league player who's been thinking of migrating to Dota or at least playing both for a change of pace, it feels very complex but then when i started league i would do weird shit like playing tank Draven and not warding anything at all.
True, im an Kha OTP but since the new Dota Anime on Netflix i was kinda curious to try Dota 2 again but then as a Serious try and not meme 1 game "That game is trash go back to League"
I got completely overwhelmed trying to jump ship from league, but this all makes sense now. Starcraft Broodwar Moba with map objectives. Makes sense to me.
The way you pronounce "Moba" makes it sound like "Mobile", so I thought you were passive aggressive against LoL when you said "Whether you tried other mobile games like League of Legends" Also, keep up the good work, we need new blood in the Dota Community
Glad to see there's already toxicity even in a video about trying to encourage new players to check out the game, nice job guys, you completely convinced me that i should change my mind about trying out the game, thanks ^^b
@@asdfawfawefwafwfwefwfawfds1811 Hahaha, oh god. Are you serious dude? I come from league, a game just as worse as Dota when it comes to in-game toxicity, that shit is a stroll in the park for me and its something i can understand because people are competitive by nature. What's putting me off is people like you who constantly bash people that come from other games just to feed your superiority complex, a behavior that I've only ever seen in the Dota community. So yeah, congratulations, you've successfully separated the chaff from the grain and proved I'm not "strong" enough for Dota. Good luck with your constantly declining player base.

Play with bots exclusively till you've got the basics down. Then prepare to still be destroyed because even low level players are good and have hundreds of games because there's not that many new players. But soon you will get placed in your skill bracket where you belong and from there you can enjoy the game.
When the first time I played DotA1, in Garena, I was like "Dafuq is this game, it's so very fking hard" And now? I was like "Why dafuq am I still having difficulties playing this game?" Starcraft is my hardest game of all time, but DotA 2? Man the complexity of the game keeps on getting harder and harder
I just love the "you don't care" since it's true. If you're a new player and know nothing about the game, focusing on the basics and not caring about the more complex stuff is the best way to get into the game.

League players are essentially screwed when they play dota because they play dota like they play league. Most guides just ignore the basics of basics simply because they think it's so self-explanatory. No it isn't - especially for players that have developed habits from other games.
Underrated comment. I play many type of moba game and some game need different mental play.

Another one is that rax's don't respawn, a small one, but it'll definitely throw league players off at first, also that "super" creeps give less gold (and i think less xp? I'm newly returning so idk what's changed in it's entirety)
"There's a large stigma to dying" LMAO League is full of feeders.

I actually just downloaded Dota 2. Have never tried this or Dota before but I just heard how complicated this was compared to LoL. After watching ur vid, still looks insanely complex, but really appreciate you making this and highlighting the things you do and don’t need to focus on as a beginner. Nice job man !
I'm not even good at league still I'm here burning my last 3 brain cells to learn this game😭
You want someone to coach you? I have 7000+ hours of in game exp. I still learn something new every now and then.
Good luck with the learning and i hope you find dota 2 enjoyable once you get the hang of it! :))
I think your statement isn't true for these reasons,
but if you take small bites,
you can eat up all the information.

Main differences to look out for in Dota as a beginner coming from LoL:

@@xitaris5981 its very much individual, as for me learning skillshots took about 40 hours.

DoTA is quite difficult at first, but after hours of playing and seeing different style of play, u can become better.

how to enjoy learning dota:
step 1 mute teammates voice and chat
This is wrong. Most ppl can not communicate because they don’t know how to effectively communicate with teammates. I won so many games just because I keep telling my team what is my next step, ask core when they feel comfortable engaging, and telling people where could be a good place to play. Toxicity drops a lot if you can make reasonable proposals to get other people on board with your strategy.

You will eventually learn that as you play more games, also you should try the Coaching mode

So yeah, congratulations, you've successfully separated the chaff from the grain and proved I'm not "strong" enough for Dota. Good luck with your constantly declining player base.
@@markcastillo2622 calm down lmao
@@AnnonHa Already am.
@@markcastillo2622 oh man i can assure you i've seen some gatekeeping from other games, even league players i see them gatekeep
He said "YOU DON'T CARE" plenty of times more than I can count.
I'm sitting here like "really? How/why does that work?" then hear "you don't care" and get deflated.
Datohleong: “In Dota, every character is uniquely overpowered in their own ways. If everyone is overpowered, no one is”
Me, who plays Smite: “Ya know, I’m something of a Dota player myself.”
Nah bro. People really out here saying league is complicated. This lowkey requires a degree to play actually

Just trying now and currently the best advice is "you can play demo of the character" lol
I tried to play Dota a year ago and quittet because i just got demolished the whole time and had no idea how things work, was frustrating, thank you very much for this.
Play with bots exclusively till you've got the basics down. Then prepare to still be destroyed because even low level players are good and have hundreds of games because there's not that many new players. But soon you will get placed in your skill bracket where you belong and from there you can enjoy the game.
i legit want this video to get more attention.
"Always use the High Ground" - Happy Obi-Wan Noise
When the first time I played DotA1, in Garena, I was like "Dafuq is this game, it's so very fking hard"
And now? I was like "Why dafuq am I still having difficulties playing this game?"
Starcraft is my hardest game of all time, but DotA 2? Man the complexity of the game keeps on getting harder and harder
i love that "but you don't care." You're damn right sir! love the guide!
I just love the "you don't care" since it's true. If you're a new player and know nothing about the game, focusing on the basics and not caring about the more complex stuff is the best way to get into the game.
The video in a nutshell: "But you don't care." 😅
