- General cargo ship Eems Drait arriving on the River Mersey. She was preparing to enter Alfred Dock on the Wirral side of the river. On her approach for some reason the turn was to far from the dock entrance and close to the wall. She hit the support structure of a ladder used by Orsted to offload crew members for the windfarms nearby. The were crew members at the bow section communicating with the bridge as usual practice, but the ship stil lmade contact. She did make it eventually into the dock.
Some details of Eems Drait:-
IMO number 9195688
Ship type General Cargo Ship
Flag Netherlands
Gross Tonnage 2218
Summer Deadweight (t) 3650
Length Overall (m) 89

Year of Build 2000

Don't hear or see the bow thruster working ?
Yeah correct, I said that at the time it happened. I couldn't hear it either
@@merseyshipping4494 I could hear the bowthruster working but with a 4m draft probably too little and too late. Takes a bit of skill to navigate with those currents. Power too which gives steerage but its a coaster really so not a fantastic response. Things happen unfortunately.
Whilst the river is in flood, you still have water coming down from Manchester so there is a ebb current running down outside of river -so a current is running down from Cammell Laird wall which can be quite strong - so the river is pushing the aft section of ship to Runcorn and ebb current sending to bow to New Brighton reason for bow hitting quay.
Could well be a contributory factor and appreciate your local knowledge. The approach looked all wrong leaving too much adjustment for the final manoeuvre. I assume there would have been a pilot on board and that the Master and pilot will have completed the necessary information exchange. Looks like the damage to the ship is minimal, but port authorities being port authorities will claim double the damage and add a bit on for their inconvenience.
wonderful, thank you, ex pat from New Brighton here in New Zealand :) sheesh bad driving! crikey.
Thanks for watching, appreciated
{Passes captain a gallon of T-cut and a used squars'l}
"Relax sir, that will polish right out!"
Fantastic Video Live Video Respekt a Poděkování Vám Všem 💙🙌👍
Thanks 👍
He missed the crash, be real
Was that Evertons new stadium at the start of the vlog ?
Yeah 👍
Is pilotage compulsory there?
I don't believe so, but don't quote me on that
TY
Yes always but if you are a regular runner here the Captain can apply to be examined for a PEC (Pilots exemption certificate)
Hello Mersey Shipping. What an amazing video. Loving the close-up shots of the bow before entering dock. What struck me, she turned so well mid-river but positioned herself too soon before entering the dock (I was thinking that before she hit the dock) , hence the mis-calculation when she came to enter the dock. There was an officer at the front of the bow, but was not there when he was really needed. Surely they could have seen what was happening on the bridge and prevented the collision. Would this be blamed on the pilot or the captain of the ship? Excellent Video. Thank you.
Thank you. I'm not sure who would be to blame, captain or pilot. Seemed to be a lack of communication between the guy on the bow and the bridge. 👍
@@merseyshipping4494 Was there a pilot aboard couldn't see no "I have a pilot onboard" flag flying?
Oh edited to say nice video though and thanks for sharing.
Great video thanks for posting
Thanks 👍
Nice video keep up the good work!!

No worries - that’ll buff right out lol
You missed it
No one was expecting it to happen but once I heard the crunch noise and managed to see some of it. 👍
No one was expecting to happen it???? Are you kidding me? You had the most clear view on the spot. Right next to you.
Just admit you missed it! 😮
@@meneertjehetheertje The sips entering the lock there always turn there, and do come close to the side before entering. no one was expecting this happen
That will buff out
😂😂😂😂😂
…..and a drop of Tcut 🤣🤣
Call it a 'Recently added Feature'. Spot of paint and it will look as though its always been there.
Did the driver just misjudge it ? 😊
We are guessing so, lack of communication between bridge and the guy on the bow. It's wasn't a strong tide so it's not that. 👍
The man with the radio had one job.
Well your hearing is obviously better than mine. I couldn’t hear what he said that caused the collision. Perhaps you could clarify.
Just checked high water for that day was 13.05 at just under 9 metres which is a very strong tide, when you approach Alfred Pierhead you have to get your bow in as close as you can to the North side then lift your stern and drive her in as the effect of the strong flood is setting the stern to the South not forgetting there is two ends to a ship !... now if he had a stern tug fast aft he could possibly have held the stern up to the North against the flood which is still strong at this time just at the crucial time his bow was about to enter. Not the worse damage to a vessel but a dint to your pride and believe me it hurt's for while ! And just as a footnote for all the experts out there the two worse places to dock a ship on the Mersey are Bromborough Dock which has long been sealed up and the worse ever as anyone with knowledge of this river will tell you is without a doubt Alfred entrance especially with no stern tug.
Nice one, thanks for the information 👍

Don't these Captains know to to drive a ship ??
Whoosh bang nasty. . . as a certain radio comedy used to say !! 🤣. Could have been worse though.
True
Worse things happen at sea
