(SOLVED) Rich Running & Fouling Spark Plugs FIX | Yamaha Virago Bobber | So Simple I Feel Dumb!

  • In this video I FINALLY solve the rich running condition on my 88 Yamaha Virago bobber project! The fix was so simple I almost feel dumb for not thinking of it before. I pull the carbs and go through them for what feels like the hundredth time, balance and tune the carbs in, and show some before and afters of the fix and how it runs. I got sick part way through filming this, so it was shot over the course of about a month and a half, but I'm feeling close to 100% now! I also show examples of the bike dropping a cylinder, and cranking but not starting, due to spark plug issues. Thanks for watching, and I hope this info helps!!

I had the same problem with my virago-1100 , and my TR1 XV1000 Roadster (chain not shaft, slightly bigger than your RJ, RH ? model 81-2) I went to iridium-plugs , one heat-range higher on rear-plug and disconnected the rev-counter (early-models pulled the 'signal' off the rear-pot ) . Only thing that really-cures them is ignitech or equivalent ign-module and different carbs or single-carb-conversion . Used to be a USA-made ignition that run off the r/h-side cam , could be 2nd-hand-ones over your-way maybe. Only expensive options in my part of the World . Dave NZ

You can hear towards the end of the video where mine is dropping a cylinder. I replaced coils and plug wires, all to find out it was spark plugs every time. They were fouling out so fast at first I thought there was no way it was just the plugs. It was so rich I would only get a few minutes of riding.

I've had and have a few of these including TR1-chain-drive. Early ones took rev-counter signal off the rear-plug , I disconnect it , run 1x hotter-plug on rear (Iridium) , replace or dismanle and clean the plug-caps , big-improvement , enough to make clutch-slip ! Remove ALL kill-switches out of the system: clutch /sidestand . Replace or dismantle/clean ign-switch and h/bar kill-switch . Run heavier-cable to starter and a separate earth-cable to starter where it bolts-on . Clean all 'Earths' and check battery-cables for dry-solder bad-connections . The 'Later' igniter-box's that are compatible are better . Check fuel-cap vents are allowing enough 'flow' , sometimes 'indexing' the spark-plugs helps also . Rear main -jet (factory) is larger to run-richer and aid cooling , check this before raising plug-temps . Dave NZ

Luckily the old stuff here is still reasonable, but slowly getting up there. We have enough modern engines to swap in, or older ones that no one wants, that all of that is still pretty cheap. I've always like bikes, and rode, just never had the desire to buy one. This was given to me by a friend who had it in pieces at the time and was fed up with it. the screws in the '97 1100 I just fixed are special torx security screws... and mine felt loc-tited in. Use a tiny flat head to remove the center security post if you don't have the special bit in your tool box... then use the correct torx to turn them... I suggest you warm up the carb body to make it come out easier... don't break one off like I did

Start with the basics. Make sure the carbs are in good order and all the settings are appropriate, then move on to other possibilities like ignition, or valve issues. I see lots of guys throwing coils and other ignition parts at these, when it usually is a carb issue.

Iv even shimmed the diaphragm. And I cannot get rid of the popping on take off or deceleration. I've got the mixture screws turned out to the max. 6 or 7 turns.
