I've been really into UU this generation and Hands feels like it's a UUBL mon to me. It's pushed out of OU because it just can't match well against the tier, but it has SO MUCH HEALTH that in UU it can just tank and roll teams easily, especially with Fairy Tera as Poison and Steel aren't exactly strong offensive typings in the tier. It gets one good SD up and it can just Drain Punch through most teams, not all but still very over bearing.

Ancient Donphan loves eating Future Hariyama for lunch, plain and simple. Also, Physical Electric moves are straight booty. What is there? A comparatively weak punch move, or the electrical equivalent of intentionally crashing a car into a tree. There is NOTHING ELSE that's good. Add in the fact that it doesn't get any other ability, and Iron Hands is set up to fail, especially when there are hard counters that it just can't break through. Quark Drive isn't horrendous for it, but if it got Iron Fist, it might have a bit more ooooomph.

Is the kind of mon who doesn't work well when there's borderline OP ground types like Great Tusk or Landorus T, but also can be opressive when those aren't around. The best ground types in UU are Sandy shocks, Donphan and Gastrodon, where only the second is an adecuate answer. Assault vest is my preferred set, but swords dance + Tera fly is insanely strong. You’re so naturally bulky and have amazing coverage that really rewards getting your turns right. It’s like a bulky nidoking from past gens, but a bit easier to use since you have the room for error due to the bulk. Another comparison could be to conkeldurr who is bulky yet insanely strong offensively. Those type of Pokémon tend to reward people who play it differently than people whose offense is Dragapult and just press Draco. One requires brain power, the other requires fingers 😂 Thought there is something to be said about ease of use for consistent performance with things like Pult. I just think people should not overlook bulky offense, it’s pretty under explored outside of the unaware demons and the few bulk up sets running around.

Honestly, I feel like Iron Hands is being overlooked despite facing stiff competition currently. SD sets are nice on specific Hyper Offense teams since Hands provides so much defensive utility for those kinds of squads while having no shortage of power, but I think what’ll ultimately keep it relevant enough to be viable in OU, if not letting it have a resurgence up here, is Band set on bulkier hazard stacking teams (i.e. paired with Tank Chomp).
Band gives me similar vibes to Melmetal, although Melm was obviously a LOT better last gen. It’s basically impossible to OHKO on the physical end and only a handful of extremely strong special attacks can OHKO it as well. And like Melmetal, it can punish pretty much anything in front of it just because of its amazing coverage and high damage output. Plus, it’s a rare physical attacker that isn’t utterly terrified of Dondozo.
I think Band’s best selling point is that it’s so good at forcing trades against almost everything except Defensive Great Tusk and special/mixed Iron Valiant. Now, that’s sadly a massive pair of exceptions, but that’s still a really interesting niche to have - and one that doesn’t necessarily require you to commit your Tera to it, either. If it gets in safely via an aggressive double switch, you’re the one with the advantage since your opponent has to play a messy prediction game against a mon that can 2HKO nearly everything in the game. Against some teams, that’s a question of *what* to sacrifice to it.

  • @RainbowLizardOne

IMO: Iron Hands matches up very well against offense structures because of its massive base stats that let it eat attacks and hit back hard in a huge amount of 1v1 matchups. Unfortunately, we've reached a much more balance-centric meta at this point, and in that type of meta, winning a 1v1 isn't really that important, because Balance teams are built to chip you down, not win clean 1v1s like a hyper offense team wants. The weakness of a Pokemon like Iron Hands is that it can't do what it does forever; even on a good day, it has to choose between giving up longevity with Close Combat and Wild Charge or power with Drain Punch and Thunder Punch, and there are a lot of Fighting resists around that don't even give it that. It's spikes-vulnerable, easy to put status on, and doesn't quite have the raw power to help compensate for those weaknesses.
It's far from unviable - it's a very consistent check to some of the tier's strongest offensive threats, like Chien Pao, Kingambit and Roaring Moon, and I think it would still be OU if Great Tusk wasn't such a problem, but that's not the world we live in. The sad thing is that as the game gets updated, we'll start to get more and more threatening fairy types that will match up well against Iron Hands, and unless Lando completely dethrones Great Tusk (which I don't think is too likely), I don't see its life getting much better.

At least it seems pretty powerful in UU. It would be a bad look for the future Hariyama if he got demoted to Smogon's equivalent of Makushita.

Also Kingambit is a comeback mon with its ability. Supreme Overlord is one of the most insane abilities every. Iron hands doesn’t have this comeback potential. Kingambit literally has Joker Arsene in smash LOL

This is explained by ladder being dumb. This bad boy is melmetal on crack. Sure having a bad matchup against the most used mon in the tier is bad but so many pokemon lost to lando last gen but stayed in ou.
