    I cant believe I only just now found this channel. I played piano as a teenager for about 3 years and was so passionate about it. I was beginning to play Chopin around this time. Once I started college, I never really played again. There were times I wanted to, but it felt like such a monumental (and intimidating) task to get back to where I was, so I just never bothered. Plus life gets busy as an adult. Now in my 40s, I want to try. I have forgotten pretty much everything I used to play, but Chopin and Schubert were my favorites. I used to listen to them on my cd player (remember those? Lol) all day and dream of playing like the masters of the craft. The way you break down each measure makes it feel a lot less intimidating. Thank you. I will be watching this channel closely and giving this piece a try. Slowly of course lol.

  • @smitlag

    I played it at age 13. The best way to deal with the 3 against 4 is to play the left-hand part by itself until you can do it on autopilot. Then concentrate on the right hand. Use the fingerings suggested by Chopin. Most of the difficulties are keeping it under your hands, which means wrist movements are critical.The end is a bit tricky since the fingers are in a clustered position. It's a great piece, though. Listen to an old recording of Jose Iturbi's version as inspiration.

    BRAVOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!! MEISTRO... Bless you for this masterful explanation. And i don't even play piano, but i adore this piece. I am certain that i could nver play this piece if i practiced for the rest of my life. But your explanation, allows me to dream that one day i could . I have gotten to the point that i rarely listen to anything but Chopin. I am convinced that no composer in the history of music is in his league. The amount of beauty in everything he wrote to me surpasses the Heiden's and Brookners of the world. SO often I hear symphonys on the radio in my car thinking at times there is nothing to hear though i know music is playing. But with Chopin you are taken on a journey where you are held captive to sounds which are irresistible to deny a melody which moves your sould from the start to the finish without a moment not carried by further anticipation. How could one know that who has no idea where middle C is? Well that is the same answer given by an accountant who is overwhelmed by a Van Gogh he's standing in front of intoxicated by colors has never seen, yet incapable of naming the colors on a wheel. The secret to artistic appreciation of brilliance is the complete lack of preparation of such a member of an audience, in order to love something one has no concept of. That of course is part of the magic I am mesmerized by. Thank you again for the video.. sorry for the long post

    I nearly cried after watching your video.
    I tried to learn this piece for years when I was 14 and could only play the easier middle part but could never figure out how to get the left and right hand to play succinctly for the beginning and end parts. I'm nearly 40 now and used your technique starting at 6:28 to separate those beats out and repeat them and I was actually able to play through the first page of the song after practicing for the day, it blew my mind. My god, it was a revelation, that was my missing link after all these years.
    Just wanted to thank you for making this tutorial video. I can't believe I'll actually be able to learn this entire piece, now.

    Thank you for such an interesting and informative tutorial. I returned to piano lessons during Covid lockdown at age 58 after a 40 year break, and now in my 60's I am enjoying lessons more than ever, despite a lot of stiffness in my fingers. Fantasie Impromptu may be beyond my physical capability (I am just about coping with Debussy's two Arabesques), but I might try to attempt learning it now. Your explanation and demonstration of the polyrhythm is wonderful. I have never achieved playing three against four, but I feel it might be possible now.

    Thank you so much for your piano lessons; I have always been afraid of Chopin Impromptu, and I am excited to try the exercises. And yes, I will buy you 3 cups of coffee, but I suggest a glass of a very warm beautiful cabernet. Thank you again.

      Thank you for the comment and the coffee! I hope the exercises can help you. I have a concert coming up very soon, and I’ll keep in mind your cabernet suggestion for after the performance! ;)

    3:01 that jump. That is the jump I've been struggling to for days and I still find it very hard to play correctly and without slowing down the tempo. The black keys are thin as hell and to catch it with the pinky is nearly impossible

      @Antune  2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      You can let go of the last A# a little earlier, so you'll have slightly more time for the jump. It will sound fine because the pedal will prevent it from sounding too short. Maybe doesn't sound like it would make too much difference, but I promise, it does enough!

    Your video tutorials are divine thank you . Will you be having a tutorial on La Campanella ? It will be a piece I’m ready to tackle in 1-2 year’s time 😀☺️

      I will make a tutorial for La Campanella at some point for sure. But I have other pieces planned from Liszt, so I can't say when. Good luck with practicing!
