I'm not an oboeist, however it is fun to watch him. He gives very thorough, helpful audition tips, and good help. Truly a master of his instrument. Also, how nice of him to explain how to double tongue.
they're both woodwinds, physical appearance is about all they have in common. Oboe is a double reed versus clarinet's single, has a higher part, and is overall more different to play. It also sounds much more interesting, in my opinion. :)
Exactly! That's the same thing I say when people are able to put soul into their music, play technical pieces, but don't understand the history or theory behind it. You have to have a good understanding of the music itself before you can truly perform it.
Ah, the internet. Someone posts something amazing and people just bicker endlessly in the comments about stupid things. To Emanuel: thank you for sharing this. Beautiful playing, and very insightful.
Using samples like I do, I really like how oboe sounds but until I saw this guy I didn't really know how to use the expressions I have in the samples library. So it finally becomes truth that you have to know how a specific instrument is capable of expressions to actually create believable sounding from samples. I've been ignorant all this time but thanks to him I am no more. (To all sample-haters - my music is for my ears only so don't complain ;) )
I used to play the oboe in an orchestra. I have not played it for perhaps twelve years! I felt like an absolute beginner at first, but after ten minutes my fingers started to move on their own! My biggest problem is the reeds. My lips are out of shape, and the reeds are not in the best condition. My lips also get slippery from saliva :) I have ordered new reeds online, can't wait to get back on the horse. You are a true master ,skillful and passionate. I hope to see more videos!
Vaya, hacia tiempo que no veía a Emanuel. Está echando barriguita jejeje. Pero sigue siendo un fenómeno. Que bien toca y que gran músico es. Gracias por compartirlo.
@KevinR3i A good reed plays a bit role in that. The other thing is your embouchure; don't bite on the reed, just put lots of pressure. Maybe pressure isn't the right word, it's the speed of the air. This takes years of practice which is why I think the oboe is one of the most difficult instruments, perhaps the most difficult.
Well, you can buy them online, but they are disgustingly expensive a lot of the time! I suggest ask the other oboes if they can get you a hold of someone who can make your reeds, or even a teacher! :)
@jat12398 Tricky note. Try to pull the reed a few mm in so that the upper part of the double reed (the part in your mouth) has more freedom/room to vibrate in your mouth. With some reeds, however, high D, D# and E are very difficult to get.
well reeds definitely matter. i have a teacher who makes them and it is easy to tell tyhe sound difference between store bought and hand made. i suggest u buy handmade ones or have someone make u reeds. :)
@BreyerReinerTex Do you mean reed as in a wrapped, ready to play reed, or the cane that you use to make a reed? If you meant the first option, then I would suggest in the long run trying to learn how to make your own reeds. Almost all Oboe players make their own reeds mainly because cheap, store bought reeds generally suck. If you're talking about the second option, then I would suggest Oboe works, but the company is going out of business.
So, this is just a question I wanted to ask any fellow oboists, but if an oboe player can do a glissando on the reed alone with only a year and a half of experience, does that mean that they are particularly gifted in any way?
I WANT TO PLAY THE OBOEEEE !!! i am studing to be a singer, and i've been told that you can do both, because of the muscles you work in different things... is this true? a real reason?? i waaant an oboeeeeeeee
I have the same kind of problem! I'm in 9th grade, too. I don't have braces, but I think it may have something to do with the reeds. Do you buy reeds from your local music store or do you have them made? (either by you or someone else?)
@hhoelper only bands with taste would have oboes. because what kind of bands would be incomplete? what if your band tried to play a piece of music with an oboe passage? it would fail. even if another instrument substituted. the oboe was a very prominent woodwind back in times. if anything, an ensemble would rather go without a clarinet.
The clarinet doesn't hurt that much. I play oboe & clarinet and I never needed a thumb cushion... but I guess that's after 4 years of playing without one ;D
So...why would you not want to play oboe? lol I've been playing violin for 8 years and I'm thinking of choosing oboe as my 2nd instrument for my bachelor degree :) so pretty
Someone help! I play in two orchestras and I'm in 9th grade. Both orchestra's conductors keep telling me to play louder, even though I am already blowing to the full extent before I squeak or sound like whispering air. What are ways to play louder? PS: I have braces....does that affect this situation? Or any situation related to the oboe? Thanks in advance
We're talking about differences of two instruments, that has NOTHING to do with playing music. Otherhand, if you dont know anything about your instrument, then you can't play _the music_, you're so worried about. When playing music, you need all three: technic, brains and soul.
I want a new oboe SO bad :'( i'm still playing on a student one and it is a piece of crap, i got to try a really nice one at an oboe/bassoon clinic and it was amazing i could like vibrato so easily and it made me really hate mine haha i wish i had the money for it :(
I buy them from my local music store and they're so terrible. Half of them are cracked right down the middle and totally usless!! I was going to have private lessons and the teacher would make me free reeds, but she never emailed my mom back. :/
I suggest using a reed that u get from online......at the store they are between 13 to 17 dollars per reed.if you need reeds aka your band instructor/teacher.preferably use a reed that has a wire because it will vibrate and make a more pretty sound
Gosh, he has gorgeous tone. I could listen to him play all day!
What a treat to get a glance into this gentleman’s way of thinking, the way he “sees” music. Brilliant.
I'm not an oboeist, however it is fun to watch him. He gives very thorough, helpful audition tips, and good help. Truly a master of his instrument. Also, how nice of him to explain how to double tongue.
I have been playing for 4 years I hope to play forever I love my oboe

My favorite instrument. It sounds so beautiful.
It's one of the hardest woodwind/brass instruments to play.
He played the solo from Tchaikovsky's 4th. :D That's one of my personal favorites.
Exactly! That's the same thing I say when people are able to put soul into their music, play technical pieces, but don't understand the history or theory behind it. You have to have a good understanding of the music itself before you can truly perform it.

This man is a living legend in the oboe player sphere !
I so loved his performances!!!

Your facial expressions are hilarious when you play. Your tone is amazing and GREAT course.
i looove the oboe's high, quirky tone. it makes the music somewhat comical :)
This is awesome!!
i can't wait to play oboe next year! it's going to be so much fun!!!!!!!
Wow, veeeery good!!! Lovely tone :) Also very didactic masterclass...
I'm speechless.
Emanuel's vibrato is brillant..Phrasing outstanding...
playing oboe makes my thumb hurts so much that I cant feel it
his vibrato is lovely! I'm trying to develop my vibrato and it's coming :p
ThePeaceAround How can we make a vibrato?

his facial expressions when he plays >
the oboe is the most beautiful woodwind in any band or orchestra. the others are pretty much kazoos. especially saxes.
why is it in the higher register that it almost sounds identical to the trumpet? i just compared them both! this is doing my headdd inn
i like the sound very soothing
Wow I would love to try an oboe.
I have played both. Oboe with three (left hand) fingers is g and in bassoon, c.
does his instrument have a thumbplate?
well reeds definitely matter. i have a teacher who makes them and it is easy to tell tyhe sound difference between store bought and hand made. i suggest u buy handmade ones or have someone make u reeds. :)
Wow this is awesome what oboe do you play on?
I love you
Done in when breath? How did they play this piece with less sophisticated oboes in the Tchaikovsky's time?
@BreyerReinerTex Do you mean reed as in a wrapped, ready to play reed, or the cane that you use to make a reed? ...I look like a tomato!
So, this is just a question I wanted to ask any fellow oboists, but if an oboe player can do a glissando on the reed alone with only a year and a half of experience, does that mean that they are particularly gifted in any way?
I just got in middle school. I am in Band I really really want to play the Oboe
He's the Frenchman from The Patriot!!
I WANT TO PLAY THE OBOEEEE !!! i am studing to be a singer, and i've been told that you can do both, because of the muscles you work in different things... is this true? a real reason?? i waaant an oboeeeeeeee

the basoon and the oboe booth have the duble reed but do they have any other tinhgs incomon for example like they take a c with the same fingers?
Is it just me, or does his reed sound really dry?
He sounds great otherwise :D
I would agree, not a fan of the tone in this video. But it can also be due to microphone placement and room acoustics.
@coranglais thanksfor the encouragement.im way better now than i was 7 months ago
lol when I read this I immediately thought 'ARGHHH MARTINU!'
@hhoelper

The clarinet doesn't hurt that much. I play oboe & clarinet and I never needed a thumb cushion... but I guess that's after 4 years of playing without one ;D
Oh, please. Try contrabassoon.
How about sousaphone or marching euphonium?
Just curious, what is your breathing technique? Do you breathe in through your nose or your mouth?
lol it looks like he's pushing out a 5 pounder
it's the same thing with the clarinet :D
Is he really supposed to move so much? He's really good.
@ISthisNOW haha i'm an oboist and i'm delighted to say my eyes don't do that XD haha
So...why would you not want to play oboe? lol
I've been playing violin for 8 years and I'm thinking of choosing oboe as my 2nd instrument for my bachelor degree :) so pretty
I don't think fingerings are very HIGHTECH thing. And it doesn't have anything to do with playing music. Can't help if it sounds "too technical"! :´ D
@waterlovergoddess My band teacher made me play the flute part...on oboe :D
Is that a correct oboe embouchure?
you are respected only from the way to talk nice
Someone help! I play in two orchestras and I'm in 9th grade. Both orchestra's conductors keep telling me to play louder, even though I am already blowing to the full extent before I squeak or sound like whispering air. What are ways to play louder?

good video
i play oboe and i sound stupid compared to .awesome!
@TheBossCoder couldn't have said it better myself
@chesecake510 practice makes perfect my friend
@ISthisNOW One of the funniest comments I've read in a long time! XD
haha at first it is cause your jaw needs to get used to it and it hurts, i know
because i play oboe
ok but how do you blow it
The oboe in my band sounds like a dying cat. But he is really good!
@coranglais OF course he does :)
Try first violin in seventh position?
He's so good, when I play I sound like a duck :P
@Intelligentia100 who cares what is harder to play? do u play it to get glory because 'it is too hard to play' or u just want to make music?
We're talking about differences of two instruments, that has NOTHING to do with playing music. Otherhand, if you dont know anything about your instrument, then you can't play _the music_, you're so worried about. When playing music, you need all three: technic, brains and soul.

you'll get used to it!!
It's quite hard to play it
i play oboe and i sound stupid compared to u.awesome!

Jake Brown Symphony #4 the beginning of Mvt. II
@ISthisNOW
@ISthisNOW its the back pressure (i hope you all know im joking)
Or Triangle
I buy them from my local music store and they're so terrible. Half of them are cracked right down the middle and totally usless!! I was going to have private lessons and the teacher would make me free reeds, but she never emailed my mom back. :/
@coranglais and horns.
try bass clarinet
@hhoelper the only thing saxes are superior to are horns.
hello...
he looks like he's in pain
is oboe like clarinet?
Hui Mei not at all
lol pause at 1:24 :P
@ISthisNOW nice try!haha
pause at 0:26 for lul
I suggest using a reed that u get from online......at the store they are between 13 to 17 dollars per reed.if you need reeds aka your band instructor/teacher.preferably use a reed that has a wire because it will vibrate and make a more pretty sound
Try bassoon =p
I'm a beginner and my lips feel sour
Great playing!
you have a strange facial expression :)
