  • This old lamp has a problem. When you rotate the switch you get a flash of light from the bulb and... that all. Mongo make sure the light bulb is good. Most likely it going to need a new switch.
Most hardware stores have these little lamp switches available. There are a few different styles and color options so just be careful when selecting the one you want/need. Mongo find one for 5 buck at the old home depot.
To start need to remove the lamp shade, this one unscrews.
Then need to unplug the lamp and remove the bulb. (never work on an electrical device that is plugged in and/or energized)
The switch socket could be attached in a few different ways. might be a set screw or might be threaded, could also be GLUE. This one unscrews.
Unthread the twist knob so it doesn't get damaged.
MONGO TIP - Mongo always removes the socket from the lamp before taking the socket apart. because depending on how old it is you might break the attachment point and turn this into a much bigger job than needed. The down side to doing this first is, the cord will twist. You will have to adjust the cord as needed to keep from damaging it.
Now the socket can be separated - The lower piece is crimped onto the light bulb socket piece. You can use a small flat head screwdriver to lightly pry the 2 pieces apart. If you are reusing the socket be gentle and slowly work all the way around the socket. It will take some time. If you are not reusing then pry that thing apart with authority, it will be damaged.
Once removed you can slide the switch and socket out of the housing. Loosen the 2 electrical terminal screws and move the wires to the new socket. Make sure the wires are in good shape (no burns, heat damage or physical damage to wires) Slide the new device into the old housing.
Reassemble - Thread the bottom piece of the socket onto the lamp. Make sure the pieces of the lamp align correctly and are not loose. Slide the new switch into the socket housing and press the 2 halves together. Use a small nail to tap each crimp notch back together. This is make sure the 2 halves stay firmly attached. GOOD to test function at this point. Finally reinstall the light bulb and shade.
Hopefully this video help you if you have a lamp that is not turning on.
