    i recommend checking the live version AFTER listening to all microtonal albums, most of their microtonal songs are in the same key so its pretty easy do mash'em up together live, and part of the appeal of of it live is how many songs are played while rattlesnake is playing

    This was the first King Gizz song I ever heard. This music video has to be one of their funniest, and simultaneously one of their creepiest in that one part.
    The Flightless Records TH-cam channel has a video called "Peeling the Flying Microtonal Banana" that explains what they did to their instruments, and is also the source of many King Gizz memes, as well as introducing the band somewhat.
    Also, I love the shape of Stu's guitar for some reason (which is actually what this album is named after.)
    Glad you enjoyed! Can't wait for the other tracks!

    @meramsey ปีที่แล้ว +14

    Stu's guitar is the Flying Microtonal Banana and was custom made by a friend, once that was done the other guys went out and bought cheap guitars they could hack up to match it.

    I absolutely *knew* you were going to crack up when you saw Ambrose's head on the snake.

    So glad you enjoyed this one! I feel pretty good about the rest. Stu's guitar is what the album is named after. I always assumed it was cause it looked like a banana peel lol, and is microtonal obviously. Apparently there is another guitar that is just called the Flying Banana by Eastwood Guitars, but it's a different shape. ALSO, in regards to TH-cam skipping around when you changed your lights: All of the numbers keys (including num pad numbers) will take you to different parts of the video. Essentially imagine every video is chopped up into 10 parts, each key takes you to a different part. So if you have your lights assigned to a number key, that would be why. Hope that helps!

    Something that you mentioned that's actually funny to me as a long time weirdo: the difference in quality of video between this video and their newest theia/silver cord/set video.
    They are still produced by the same guy, Jason Galea! His early Gizz videos are very similar to this one, but just like the rest of the band, he's branched out so much and improved in different ways! I agree, their new vid looks sooo good that you would think they brought in some big production company or something, but I think Jase just has more resources and stuff to play with as the band has gotten bigger

      Though TBF, i’m sure the ”obvious green screen” look was a stylistic choice here.

    Funny that you mention this a good driving song. It uses the Motorik beat, which was a hallmark of the early 70’s German Experimental rock scene (Krautrock), with bands like Neu!, Kraftwerk and Can utilizing it. Motorik roughly translates to “motor skill”, and does give the impression of forward, propulsive motion. King Gizzard are big fans of that scene (Joey wears a Neu! shirt on the cover of Float Along Fill Your Lungs) and i think it influences a lot of what they do.

    This poor dude's about to Google "microtonal guitars" and have a heart attack!
    Also, I agree with the other comment that you should check out the album versions and videos of the microtonal songs before you check out the live versions. They definitely fit those microtonal songs into the live sets deliberately and with purpose. They use some to tease other songs, they use some in a more hard rock way than they do on the albums.

    Yea, these extra frets allow them to play quarter tones as opposed to the standard half tones. Even the fucking harmonica is microtonal.

    About the shortcuts on TH-cam:
    - "j" is 10s backward
    - "k" is pause
    - "l" is 10s forward

      Also, ALL of the number keys will take you to their respective parts of the video (as if the video was broken up into 10 parts) which I'm guess is what happened. I know that I probably would set my lighting settings to numbers.

    The KEXP studio versions are so good too. Plus you get to see the fretboards up close. Especially Nuclear Fusion, but also Doom City, Sleep Drifter and Billabong Valley

  • @cmhmania
    @cmhmania ปีที่แล้ว +7

    Yeah so you haven't seen that kind of guitar set up before because it's all custom. Even the bass guitar has those frets. The deal with microtonal music is it incorporates more notes that the standard 12 notes us westerners are used to hearing. Those frets give them access to those "out of tune sounding in-between notes". Hopefully that helps. Understanding what microtones are will really help you enjoy this record.

  • @agodlike_tazmaniandevil2305

    The Red Rocks 22’ version is an absolute necessity for this song, combines the best of the microtonal trilogy into one giant jam and it’s glorious

  • @jakeconibeer
    @jakeconibeer ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I think (if I remember correctly) the fret layout was based off a Turkish instrument called a Baglama that Stu owned and had written a few songs on. Those song became the first tracks on FMB and they modified cheap guitars with extra frets to play them and record them.

  • @boltron7674
    @boltron7674 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I think the story with the guitars is they bought cheap, thrift store guitars and had them custom made for microtonal music. Started off as an experiment and now they have 3 amazing albums dedicated to it.

    So stoked you have gone down the Giza rabbit hole. If I can recommend a TH-cam vid or 4, it's the official 4 part documentary on the Gizz-verse. How each song connects, and each album connects. all the meaning behind lyrics etc. It's crazy good.

    You need the mood, you need the live you need 2017/18 this is when rattlesnake kicks the most - although these days out of nostalgia the energy goes nuts too live.
    The repetition will become your best friend at some point!

  • @paulb808

    This song is a banger, and in concert it sets the crowd off. I find watching Gizzard music videos first distract from whats going on in the music on first viewing. These microtonal albums are amazing!

    the band added frets to their guitars to imulate turkish music scales making the music “microtonal", also Stu’s guitar looks like a flying v banana, hence the name "flying microtonal banana”.
    Edit: i kept watching and you pretty much realised this.

    If you are going to check out a live version, find one from a couple of years ago. Lately they have been merging other micronotonal songs into the live Rattlesnake but with older sets you'll be safe I think.

    The repetition comments are a bit of an overreaction. Way more of a krautrock thing where instead of relying heavily on drastic changes in a song, you’re teased with climaxes in subtle ways and then when it does peak it hits harder, and differently. That’s what sets rattlesnake apart from a song like balrog. Amped for you to do open water. Top 5 gizz song for me.

  • @ashleymenegon6319
    @ashleymenegon6319 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hey @rockdariff Since you're doing Flying microtonal banana get yourself in the head space that this is the first of 5 albums they released in 2017. It was this, then Murder of the Universe, which you've done, then Sketches, the Polygondwana, which you've done, and finally Gumboot Soup which was release just after Christmas before the year ended. Mayne it was New Years Eve actually. I remember looking for it.
    Here's an idea. After this album you do Sketches (Which is a nice chill Genre Shifter album, then you can do Gumboot Soup. Which is absolutely classic. Two nice heavy tracks for ya and heaps of vibe. You could do all 2017 then imagine putting them all out in one year.

    • @ashleymenegon6319

  • @cacojugon

    The video is great with its retro 3D graphics and the goofiness of Joey and Ambrose 😂
    The song feels repetitive when they throw the 3rd or 4th chorus in less than 3 minutes but then they start the bridge and introduce new instruments like piano, harmonica and even zurna (Turkish wind instrument Stu plays) which makes it a song I enjoy.
    Rattlesnake Rattlesnake Rattlesnake Rattles me

  • @MurphDawg311
    @MurphDawg311 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    I think my biggest issue with Rattlesnake is similar to your thoughts on Dripping Tap…it stands out too much on its own as an opening track and kind of takes away from the rest of the album

    • @anthonyleone6487
      @anthonyleone6487 ปีที่แล้ว

      Most bands compile songs and release an album every few years and cut away some of the fat. Gizz releases albums so fast a lot of albums suffer from not having an equal number of bangers... Thus the bangers really stand out above the rest of the cuts. Not every gizz album suffers from this, but many do outside of Fuzz, Nonagon, Fishing and PDA. Laminated Denim works as a complete album too although that is more like an EP.

  • @maidentallica
    @maidentallica ปีที่แล้ว

    I think people just expected you to dislike it because of the repetition tbh. Personally it's my least favourite on the album, I suspect you'll enjoy the other tunes more too. I agree with the other commentors to hold off on a live version for now, or check out a much older version (2019 or earlier) so you don't spoil some of the other microtonal songs, as cool as some of the recent jams/medleys have been.
