    yoooooo innercell > loyalty > horology is one of this band's best combo of songs, and that's saying a lot because they have A LOT of banger 3 song runs on albums

  • @oImighty

    In my opinion, the KEXP version is the best one. Still, any version of Crumbling Castle is the embodiment of the band itself.
    It perfectly captures their love for polymeters, mood changes, weirdness, unordinary style, and impressive musical skills.

    This era of king gizz almost always has intentionally lofi sounding drums. It's one thing that I'm glad they started to make sound better on their newer records. Definitely one of those things gizzard has gotten a lot better at is their mixing and mastering

    • @shrimpe2876

      I wouldn't say it's better or worse, it's just style dependant. I love the drums on their earlier stuff.

    Joey has credits for vocals with Stu on CC.
    Ambrose however has credits for vox on tracks 8 & 10.

    I recommend reacting to the full KEXP video that includes "Crumbling Castle" in it. Every song in that performance is amazing live. One of the reasons the live version is shorter is because they remove the last section and instead transition it right into another song.

    I would suggest you listen to the whole studio album and then listen to the whole KEXP session where they play four songs from this album + two from Gumboat Soup at the end. Their live transitions between the songs are incredible and IMO it's their best KEXP session as a whole.

    So cool to see you tripping on Poly. You're in for a treat!
    One thing to keep in Mind is that this album is literally free! From wiki ""The release date and cover art were publicized by the band, who stated, "This album is FREE. Free as in, free," encouraging fans to make their own copies and bootlegs of the album. The band said that they would not be selling the album in any shape or form, even going so far as to put the master tapes online (including a vinyl master) for free use. Not only is that an incredible feat, but also removes any worries about YT copyright issues.

    Funny thing about Crumbling Castle, is I think based on the post-it notes in the background of their behind the scenes footage for Murder of the Universe, Crumbling Castle was at one point a part of Murder of the Universe, though its unknown to what extent and what state it was in as a song / suite. Regardless, both were released the same year, along with three other albums. Polygon is tied in with Mind Fuzz, Nonagon and Murder, but not as strongly as those three albums are tied with each other, as all three of those albums essentially use the same basis for their album covers and have some overt elements carrying between them.

    I’m sure other fans will disagree, but I think you should save the KEXP sessions for separate reactions and listen to the album(s) first.
    Also, this record was released with an open source / fair use license, so you shouldn’t be getting dinged for copyright on these videos. The album was released for free and the band encourage fans and record labels to press up their own vinyl/ cd/cassette/8track/whatever variants for this record. There’s like 300 different versions of this record on discogs.

  • @brabuss94

    You made the right choice, the KEXP version misses the beginning and the end of the song. I think you can appreciate the live version much more if you listened to the studio one first.

    So stoked to see you get to this record. The whole record is structured around polymeters, so I would suggest going back to each song and focusing on the drums and bass and how they weave in and around the melody.

    Each section of polygondwanaland that you mentioned each roughly come out to about 10-12 minutes per section so im hoping that wont be an issue when it comes to the full sections. Plus if im being honest your reactions could be an hour and a half long full album listens and id watch the whole thing. Love seeing king gizz through other peoples eyes for the first time again. Keep it up man!
    P.S. the sound you're talking about that stu does is done by turning the delay pedal up to full and sliding up the high end of the neck

  • @agodlike_tazmaniandevil2305
    @agodlike_tazmaniandevil2305 ปีที่แล้ว +12

    This is going to be a long ass post, so please excuse me as I desperately try to summarize my thoughts:
    1. Polygondwanaland’s main concept was playing with polyrhythms and polymeter (i.e. multiple time signatures running at the same time) so as you get into the album, and especially the Inner Cell trilogy, listen for that.
    2. I’d recommend pulling up lyrics for this album as its the most story focused beside Murder of the Universe.
    3. The albums tying into each other really kicked off after Nonagon, with 4 of the 5 albums from 2017 (Murder, Flying Microtonal Banana, Sketches of Brunswick East and Poly) all tying into each other to create what fans have dubbed “The Gizzverse.” Most of the albums after that are not as tightly connected but most have some thematic or character connection to the gizzverse in at least one of their tracks. You don’t need to worry about it too much, but if you want to learn more there’s a wealth of resources of people offering their interpretations of the story.
    4. This is imo the best Gizz song. Other songs I personally like more, but this song (and the rest of the album) is perhaps Gizz’s best work with having an instrumentally cohesive album, it’s amazingly composed. Let me know how you like the live version!

    • @ronnfig
      @ronnfig ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Couldn’t agree more w/ 2 and 4.
      Maybe not necessarily the best lyrics but definitely lyrics that tell a great story throughout the entire album.

      The Gizzverse is one of the most interesting and coolest things about this band besides their amazing music, that only keeps getting better and better. Like they haven't even reached their peak yet and they're 24 albums in. Incredible.

    I'm stoked that you love this one so much. I heard the title song, Polygondwanaland, album track, played on KEXP during prime time radio and I was captured 😂 Hope you feel the same. Talk all u want but I do hope you do the rest of the album in thirds.

  • @planet7085

    As others have said, i feel it was such a shame to go from PDA to Murder. I didnt like murder til i saw it live.
    This song was one of the first few that I would play on repeat getting into Gizz. Loved putting nonagon on repeat too, as well as FMB. Rats nest was crazy for me because I never liked metal/thrash yet it became one of my favourite albums of all time. PDA took its place though.
    Anyway, rant over, love the content, it makes me nostalgic.
