  • When it comes to building user friendly, scale detailed and highly capable off-road RC trucks, Axial Racing knows exactly how to deliver. They continually put out some exciting products that get you excited about your hobby over and over. With the release of the SCX10 III, lots of builders jumped on the platform because it was loaded with great features. One feature that stood out were the portal axles. They certainly have their benefits of reducing torque twist and extra ground clearance, but it was exactly scale when comparing the RC Jeep kits they were on to their full-scale off the show-room floor counterparts. So behind the scenes, Axial has been working on a standard axle conversion kit. Everything you need to swap out the portals for the new AR45 straight axles. What does the kit include? How easy is it to swap out? How will it perform? All of those questions will be answered in our detailed video. If you’ve been waiting to have your Axial Jeep sit on a standard axle set or if you are looking for a great axle set for a custom build, you need to see our video!

      Yes, meaning the length of the cut in the gear from center to outer dia. Is at an angle (simple terms) matching the arc or the helical design. All three things, the bevel, helical and hypoid are not easy to achieve. People will find it important to shim these diffs over time and break in is a real thing now.

    I could be wrong I have been before, but my humble opinion would be the people who purchased the all New designed SCX10-III bought it specifically for the Portals. personally I wouldn't buy anything New if it wasn't what I wanted, so I couldn't imagine people buying the Newely designed Scx10iii for $500.00 dollars then turn around & drop another $2 hun plus on axial's new straight axles. Id imagine anyone with an oz of sense that doesn't want Portals would either buy the Scx10ii or wait & see if they make a 3 factory ready with straight axles... 👍🏼

    • @rcdriver
      @rcdriver  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Some people just have to have it I guess. I tried to get some info if these axles would be in a rig, but didn’t get a real response. If they do have something coming, it could be months. Some people might not want to take the wait and see approach.

    • @Guy-em4ck
      @Guy-em4ck 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Exactly. I bought a SCX10-2 a month after the SCX10-3 came out. Planning on getting a regular TRX4 because the alt functions (transmission and differential control) actually do something. The transmission in the SCX10-3 is pointless. The difference between speeds is tiny. On the TRX4 it’s noticeable. The DIG function in SCx10-3 isn’t that useful. Locking diffs on TRX4 is useful and makes sense with the higher gear. The SCX10-3 just doesn’t click as a purchase for me. If someone is looking for portals why not just get the TRX4?

    • @RyanRKJ
      @RyanRKJ 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I agree. I'm really hesitant to buy a 10iii right now if my end goal is straight axles. I've been waiting for straight axles since the release of the 10iii. It's been a little while, and now I'm looking at waiting another few months before they combine the straight axles with a kit or RTR. Will my patience hold up? I'd really like to get a new rig in the next month or two, but the cost of a 10iii with portals + the straight axle kit is too much.

  • @RyanRKJ
    @RyanRKJ 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Thanks for the video Greg. After some debate, I decided now was the time to pick up a 10iii, with the intention of doing the standard axle swap. I usually prefer an RTR over a kit, but doing this swap on an RTR will give me a bit (but not too much) of wrenching time to amuse me on a dark winter night. I intend to sell the portals to subsidize the cost.

  • @bPcrazydave
    @bPcrazydave 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    To me portal axles accomplish the exact same thing as running taller tires; they give you more clearance under the pumpkin, at the sacrifice of a higher CG, including unsprung weight. It seems to me taller tires will get you in the exact same place, but without the extra parts to break, and a better approach angle. I would assume the higher clearance under the axles would be better for a pile of rocks, but when you get out on the side of a mountain, doing near vertical climbs, and a lot of side hilling, you want to keep everything as low as possible.
    I just find it humorous people are going back to the the straight axles. I’ve been running the original SCX10 TR, the one that came with the classic truck body, and Proline tires. I was afraid it was getting outdated, but I took it out recently, and it’s still dialed.

    Hi, RC DRIVER ! 🙂 - Now that we have a different "gearing" behind the motor, will we see an improvement in the "1st to 2nd gear-spread", or no ? - Stock trans. gearing was too close together for some/most, so will this help, with the portals being gone as well ?? - Please & thanx ! 👍

  • @paulschryer9571
    @paulschryer9571 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    YES....!!! - NOW, it moves & looks like an actual AXIAL !! - Almost like my SCX10 II !! 🤘👍 😁 Yes, of course the flex & articulation of the sus- pension is increased because of the amount of room for this, and you actually get a better planted "side-bite" with a more direct leverage on the side of the axle with the lower tire, when it meets the ground, or rock.
    - With portals, you get a funny, almost tippy feeling because of the "over-leveraged" physics of the (L) -shaped angle produced by the portal (risen) axle(s). It is simply weight, leverage, physics, and tipping-point. - Which with a low-swung tire (angle) on it's side-wall already, (w/portals) creates a more drastic than desired sideways force. Possibly causing your SCX10 III, or (EX.) Traxxas TRX4 to be quite a bit more likely to side-roll, down hill. 😉 Any vehicle with portals runs a higher risk of off-centering it's balance, versus the small or great benefit of having
    (axle & diff.-housing)-clearance. 🤔
    - So, now that owners & buyers have the option with this AXIAL SCX10 III,
    portal or straight -axle, leaves it up to you ! 🤔 Instead of when AXIAL (originally) came out with the 10.3
    Portal version first, there was no option/choice ! But now you can have the best of both styles & purposes, built specifically for this great vehicle !! 👍👍.....😁
    - GO AXIAL !! 🤘 🇺🇲 - Happy Trails ! ✌️
