  • To celebrate the 20th anniversary of the Volkswagen Innovation and Engineering Center in California, the company’s team of designers, engineers, and scientists wanted to do something memorable to represent Volkswagen’s DNA while pushing the future of car design forward. So the team brought the past and the future together by taking a classic 1962 VW Bus and retrofitting it with the latest technology, including generatively designed elements such as wheel rims and wing-mirror arms. Watch the process of bringing a retro icon into the digital age using generative-design technology.

The aesthetics feel a little slapped together, but overall this concept and execution are extremely exciting!! I would love to see a vehicle where the generative designed elements feel more integrated with the overall form.

Sooo Cool. I have used generative design for a knuckle of ATV. I got 38% reduction in mass and also explored many other alternatives. Working with G.D is so cool

Do they include manufacturing limitations into the design process? Or is generative design always going to be 3D printed Alien Bones?

Generative design can be used simply as suggestions where they can apply traditional forms to reflect the generative design; thus, creating a product that's easily manufactured while benefiting similar performances of generative design.

Generative design does provide a skeleton framework often for optimized designs. However they can be further stylized to fit certain brands / applications better + include ergonomics and manufacturing contraints. This is the job of the 21st century industrial designer. We also need algorithms to further stylize the generative design output, that is something for Autodesk to definitely work on! However it is quite critical since changing small parameters such as a radius or thickness can significantly impact performance so it would require re-evaluation.

Andrew, I know he's not from VW, but Colin Chapman deserves recognition for "add lightness" 2:32. You don't have to mention Lotus, just give him his due.

@Iamyou iamyou Yeah I know they're different. But in Topology you could choose the amount of material to remove (%) and whether you want to maximize strength or stiffness. Also you need a starting part in topolog, In generative you don't

Wheels are a nightmare to clean, vulnerable to damage and corrosion, the mirror mounts would make a lot of wind noise. The more you think about these things the more you realise this is not the future.
