I'm not American, what is 401k?
@@AndruuEsp in simple terms it is a privately invested pension plan. Cashing it out early means that you do not get to benefit from the compound interest that you would have gained over a longer period of time; plus there are penalties for cashing it out early.
It is essentially a savings account where money is automatically deducted from your paycheck each pay period. This money is taken out before the employees paycheck is taxed and the funds are invested at the employee's direction into one or more funds provided in the 401k plan. It is intended to be a retirement fund thus there are significant penalties if you withdrawal the funds before you reach 59 1/2 years of age.

Cashing out your 401k is a bigger mistake than student loans....
ahri they’ll penalize you for taking out of your 401k before a certain age, I believe it’s 62.

@Catherine B but when you cash out a 401K you pay a penalty of 10% on top of your tax rate, transferring it to a Roth would just be the normal tax rate.
What is cashing out? That number seems so scary too.. I dont want to live forever just to pay debt 😅
she barely had any money in it, student loans is worst because you can never get rid of it besides paying for it, she can always recoup the little money she had the 401k
$1,000 on food for 2 people is really crazy. She can budget herself to $400 a month for for both of them and use that $600 to invest in something that will make her residual income.

I'm going to chime in here, as a disabled individual, and remind EVERYONE that you need healthcare before you are born, and after you die. I know you will probably need healthcare in between there. Deny it all you want, it doesn't matter, the reality is going to slap you across the face.

That's not necessarily bad for an apartment in NYC.
Mistake #1, an iphone
1. $1k for a room in NYC is normal. It's nearly impossible to find anything for less than $800/month that isn't really far from Manhattan or doesn't have some sort of bug/mice/rat infestation. Some okay places exist at those prices but the competition for them is high whenever they become available. 2. She is most likely on an unlimited plan and paying for the phone per month, rather than having paid for it upfront. But yeah, iPhones are pricey, she could have saved money getting a cheaper phone. 3. It says she is paying for both her and her bf's food (not sure why), so that is around $500/month each, which isn't that crazy for NYC ($16.50/day, when food is like 50%-200% as expensive as in smaller US cities, even in the grocery stores). They could save money eating instant ramen and spaghetti every meal but no one wants to live like that after college if they don't absolutely have to.

There are things she is doing that she could be doing better. For example, saving. However, she seems super happy and relaxed. Not many can say the same. I hope she keeps earning more to allow her to save more. Emergency fund, taxes fund and a retirement fund.
One small little thing these hipsters who invaded the nyc leave out of there great life traveling stories is that there family’s usually are absolutely rich. And they are trust fund baby’s. I live in Indiana & would live comfortably on that. Honestly, I'd live comfortably on what I make now if I never wracked up credit card debt after getting laid off but I also lived in KY before moving here in may & $50k would have you living comfortably there as well but I'll just speak for me as a single person with no kids.

People like her are prepositioned to forcing themselves into "jobs" in areas were there is simply a massive over demand while ignoring opportunities that open up in other fields of work that pay much better.
All that following your dreams will do is leave you rigidly inflexible, stubborn and unable to see opportunity if it smacked you in the face. It also makes you financially illiterate because you assume that you can "make" a job and as a result money when in reality you can't. This woman has pinned her hopes on it all working out in the future when it's unlikely that it will.
I was offered a job as a labourer in an engineering workshop, it;s not by any means what I wanted to do but I went for it anyway because the money was good. Fast forward 6 years and I;m in the process of buying my third house and I'm not even 30. In another 6 years I think I'll be financially made for life with all the rent money coming in.

The title of the video really doesn't fit, it feels vague on so many levels
1) You don't need an IPhone. A low end smart phone will cost about $140 total with a $50 a month payment. 2) I care more about my quality of life than the quality of my bank account?! That literally makes no sense. If you had a major financial set back that "quality of life" would immediately be lost. Not to mention when you reach retirement age and you have no money because you CASHED IN YOUR 401K!!! 3) I don't like thinking about money... Well that's obvious. 4) Your DAD paid your taxes!!! i really enjoyed seeing her sector of reality-- sure, not everyone's parent's can bail them out of a tax situation however, there are really deep lessons here about the precarious nature of work for our generation and also the choices she made in lifestyle to make it happen- a roommate, 80/podcast episode-- seems like she found a balance of self and contribution that is inspiring

I looked her up and she moved to Puerto Rico (I’m guessing for the lower cost of living).
I can’t tell you how inspiring this is for me. I’m also a writer, moving to Brooklyn in a few months, and I can’t tell you the amount of resistance I’ve faced from others in the name of supposed logic based on their perception of this decision. I know it’s extremely hard work to get up there (and to stay there), but that doesn’t take away from the fact that this “unconventional” decision is absolutely necessary for me.
I’m in my late twenties, and to a large extent, I deeply felt that making such a move would be a bit childish for me in some way. Thank you for your example of courage and taking charge of your life the way you have. It means a lot to me. Thanks CNBC for this inspiring video!

my point is she’s doing what makes her happy even if that means going the unconventional route. Her courage is commendable enough, in my opinion. For that, she’s doing better than most.
Besides, her life has just begun. She’s got a whole future ahead of her, as do all of us. Things may not be seamlessly working for her, but I think she’s off on a good foot.

She's going to be on the streets when she hits 50 and will wonder what went wrong. As a millennial myself, I can't blame past generations for mocking us. "In addition to not having much of a salary, I'm also financially illiterate. Instead of becoming financially literate through further education or seeking someone who is, I'm just going to spend all my money ignorantly. These people are corporate America's favorite type of person who will forever stay in a perpetual state of turning the gears at the bottom of the socioeconomic level.
Get a job at ups. I work 60 hrs a week at 36 bucks an hour, have full benefits, a pension, and 401k. I love working and being competitive. I want to be the best driver in the world and I get loads of fulfillment everyday. Only catch is I probably do more work in a half hour than you'll probably do in a month.
With all due respect, that mentality is exactly what I'm talking about, you're implying the fact that many older Americans don't have enough savings, why should the younger generation not just axe their future and spend their money to live in the now. Sure there will still be some old timers still working whether it was because of the recession, ill advised financial decisions, or flat-out minimum wage jobs but let's not pretend like they are a majority.
Whether one wants to retire or not is completely up to them, but its the fact that they have the choice to retire or not. That to me when I become old, gives me peace and mind that I can stop working whenever I want to.
@@alanlee67 my husband is a driver for UPS and yes the pay is great and benefits are insane. He had to be there 5 years before going FT but even when he was PT we both had health insurance with ZERO deductible/oop. That's unheard of.

Hard to comment on this because as I was exploring my options & went through my savings my Ma helped me A LOT.
There are other expenses not noted, entertainment, waxing, nails, hair, insurance, Uber, etc.

A student loan isn’t a mistake if you’re smart about what school you go to (low tuition) and if you actually go for something that pays in the end like the medical field, engineering or science.

These negative comments actually piss me off. I think what she means when she says no one told her anything is that she did not expect things to be as hard as they are. I don’t think she’s not living in reality. Most partners sheild their children to the realities of the world in an effort to ensure they enjoy life without the added pressure of knowing that money runs everything. I think what she’s doing is trying to find a balance. She’s living in the now so she can be comfortable and happy without feeling like she is living hand to mouth which can be very draining for anyone
I'm 32 in Brooklyn, and if I told my dad about a surprise $5000 tax bill, he would say "Wow, kiddo, that's tough. How are you going to handle that?" If my parents were bankrolling my passion project in my 30s, I wouldn't be able to show my face on the street, let alone on a very public TH-cam channel.

Cut your grocery bill in half & you can save $6,000 a year. Food may be more expensive in New York but if you learn where to grocery shop vs. where not to shop, you can cut your food bill down. $250 per person is still a generous amount to spend on food even if food is higher in New York.
