  • I finally took on thrifting in England!! I've seen all the comments from you guys telling me how awful it was, so I took on the challenge and did 3 different types of thrifting in UK! ☀️Instagram: / alexasunshine83 👇🏻 Click down below for more 👇🏻
    Of course it was different and I'm not going to lie I have a new appreciation for thrifting in the US, but I almost enjoyed the challenge! Being able to find gems like that Disney shirt was so random and so exciting because I had to dig and really search for it which is the whole reason I enjoy thrifting so much!

    I find smaller charity shops for local charities or smaller charities are the best in England. Also makes a huge difference where you are, big city big prices, posh town means good stuff but lower prices. Also places where people have different style are good. Hey Alexa! I would say cool video but I didn’t exactly watch it but I did give you a Like.
    Anyways, I’m commenting because my lovely girlfriend who likes to watch your videos at max volume while she gets ready for bed. I have noticed in a couple of your videos I very loudly hear the battery in your Fire Detector Alarm is low and about to die. ( 1:20 )
    I have asked the girlfriend to leave a comment suggesting to change your battery but she said this was somehow embarrassing and that she couldn’t even notice it. (Which I find absolutely incredible considering she listens to your videos at volumes that are comparable to a Jet Engine taking off)
    I bring this up for a couple of reasons:
    1. It is very unsafe to have a non functioning fire alarm. They save thousand of people and pets from tragic fires every year! (Completely made up fact. I’m too lazy to look that statistic up but it sure sounds good.)
    And 2: Every time I hear it I lose my mind.. it is the equivalent of the sound of 1000 chalk boards being scraped by nails. Or the sound of someone scraping their fork and knife on a ceramic plate while trying to cut their food.
    So please, for your safety and my sanity, purchase a 9VOLT battery ($1.50 on Amazon) to replace that annoying chirping sound.
    Thank you so much,
    -irrationally angry boyfriend

    I'm an American living in the UK, so I thought this video was super interesting! It's definitely cool to see both sides of the coin and be able to compare. I'm actually surprised people say thrifting is bad here! I find it's different than American thrifting and that's maybe what's throwing people off. In America, you hit up goodwill and for the most part it's a one stop shop depending on the size/quality of the store. In the UK, I find you have to go thrifting a lot and everywhere to find items you like. The charity shops are much smaller, but there's more of them. I love thrifting as a hobby so it's not a bother, but I can see it being too troublesome for someone that didn't enjoy it. Overall, I think thrifting relies on different strategies in the US vs. UK. I hope you had a wonderful trip!! ❤️

    You’re so cute, I hope you had fun in England ❤️ Also the internal struggle is real sometimes like you said when you see prices at the thrift store vs. fast fashion 😅 And then having to remind yourself why you chose Goodwill over the mall in the first place. Love that your honest about it 💕

    • @alexasunshine83
      @alexasunshine83  5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      EXACTLY! Yeah I wanted to show it’s okay if you have that struggle too, pretending to be perfect is so unrealistic and I think is the big reason why people stick to fast fashion because they are familiar and are scared to fail with thrifting. It’s all about the reason why you do it 👍🏻

  • @hannahwicks7197

    You have to consider where you are. Because I live in a less well off place with an older population I'll get cheaper stuff but it'll be harder to find something I like. But I've been to places like Oxford and Cambridge where are there are poorer younger people (college students) but also richer older people so that was interesting. I should think Brighton would be an awesome place. But I've never been.

    • @TheDundeeBiscuitLuvU
      @TheDundeeBiscuitLuvU 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@dinodino6079 It depends on the shop, some have rules that everything in the shop is under £5-10, but the quality of items in those stores will be lower as better quality items go to shops with higher price points. But it's definitely not uncommon to find charity shops where most items are priced at least as, if not more expensive as things in primark for example.

    London is expensive hence the prices if you travel outside London then the prices are two to three pounds for a top and maybe 7 to £10 for a very nice coat. I find that in the charity shops in London you do not see actual authentic vintage but if you travel to Kent or Surrey in the little villages there are loads of very nice vintage clothes. The best thing I got was vintage Gianni Versace bag from the 80s for £15

Technically yes and technically no 😂😂

    If you're ever in the Netherlands, look up "vintage kilo sale" or "vintage rebel" on the internet. They organize vintage sales per kilo. You pay 15€ (16$) per 2 pounds and it doesn't matter how many pounds you buy.. they have it all.. and it's much more affordable!! This is how I buy vintage.. never in stores 🤗

    I used to work in charity shops.
    They do a rotation scheme.
    So if you go in and see a date for example 10.05.2021 that will be the date they remove those things and get some new stuff to put on the shelfs.
    Some places use colour stickers instead but the same thing is true.
    So you could go in one day and find nothing then go in a few weeks later and find lots of things.

    45 pounds for a vintage Levis jacket is expensive especially when you consider the conversion rate. Here in Toronto my favorite vintage/thrift store has racks upon racks of Levis jackets and jeans from $10 cad which is about $8 us.

    I'm from Malaysia and its not easy to find thrift shops around here but there definitely is, with the help of Google. I usually go to this specific one, most of my hoodie and jackets are from there 😂 and they also have this ongoing promotion for tank tops! 3 for rm10. Some of the clothing items can be expensive since they're still in a good condition or branded. I love your videos Alexa, your thrifting videos inspired me to thrift again💕😘

    Brighton and London are probably the most expensive places to charity shop, its best to go to smaller towns, also donation centres are the closest to American thrift shops, especially Barnardo's the big donation centre ones because most things are 99p in there 😁

    • @bums009
      @bums009 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah though to be fair it depends where in London. I'm from Greater London and grew up going to charity shops and things can be super cheap it just depends where you are and which charity it is.
      For example I'm in Ashford atm and there is a barnardos shop that has amazing stuff for so cheap but just across the road is the Princess Alice Hospice and their prices are so much more expensive lol

    Next time you're in England, come to Manchester and have a look round the vintage shops in the Northern Quarter! And then wander out to the suburbs to look in the charity shops. I do get a lot of things from charity shops but it is hit and miss and a lot of effort.
    Also worth noting that a lot of the best stuff that gets donated to charity shops isn't necessarily sold in store - some of them, like Oxfam, train their volunteers to filter out some of the most desirable items so they can sell them online, where they can potentially raise more funds from them than they could in store. Oxfam has its own thrifting website where you can search for what and find a lot more recognisable, popular brands from designer to high street.

    Ahhh LOVE THISSSS. Next time you come to the UK I would really recommend independent charity shops which tend to be a bit cheaper - the bigger charities like British Heart Foundation and Cancer Research have a set amount that they need to charge for certain brands and so you'll normally be able to predict the prices in all their charity shops across the UK, they don't vary much (although my local one has great sales!). But independent chari shops (the Aladdin's cave type ones) tend to be a lot cheaper, mostly less than a fiver :-) Also gotta recommend jumble sales and carboot sales too, I went to a jumble sale yesterday where every item of clothing was 40p and I DIED (i got so much)

Thankfully I live in a smaller town in the countryside and not the city like London so it’s not so picked over. Most of my finds however are from carboot sales and that’s where I mainly find branded pieces (usually anywhere from 50p to £2) so if you’re ever here again I would absolutely recommend a good ol’Boot sale😊 xx

    If you ever find yourself in Sacramento, you should totally check out EcoThrift. They've got a huge store there. And if you haven't been there before, they do different deals every day based on the color coded price tags so one color will be 10% off, one will be 50% off, and one will be 75% (or something like that). I got a pair of shoes for a dollar there once!
    I'm new to your channel, so I don't know where you've been thrifting before, and if you have been to EcoThrift before, you probably already know how awesome it is!
